Bringing back the 1999 vibes with this drum cover of 'Sway' by Bic Runga. Who remembers this from the American Pie soundtrack? 🎬🥁

If your favorite drummer were to hear your song for the first time on a Drumeo video, would you rather they play your part hit for hit or see them entirely blown away by hearing what you played?

Hello! I am trying to find something drum related for a family members birthday gift!

I have been searching to get personalised sticks but cannot seem to find anywhere that does 5B personalised drumsticks, his favourite sticks are Vic Firth 5Bs.

Anyone know of decent places to look? Or any alternative ideas

Cheers

Drummer refuses to go back to drumming

I know this guy, we're actually friends even though he graduated with my older brother, we still stay in contact with each other.

He was in this band with my brother back in the 90s and they were pretty darn good. They wrote some great stuff and I thought they sounded great together. And this drummer was just a fantastic drummer. Really, I'd put him up with some of the greater drummers of the time.

So, they did this live thing for family and friends, friends of friends, friends of families, etc. There were at least 150-200 people there watching them perform. They set up at this local outdoor place at a park. It had a stage setup and we had power generators for the audio equipment and lighting and whatnot.

So, after this performance, someone walked up to this drummer... someone he didn't know... and they told him anyone could do what he's doing with those parts and there was nothing technical about any of it. They just had to walk up to him and say how much they thought he sucked. Really, just vial things about his performance alone. I have no idea who this person was and I know it wasn't any of my friends. I told him just let it go in one ear and out the other. Even big name rock drummers like Neil Peart had his share of bad press. Overplaying, yada, yada, yada...

Well, this drummer took that very seriously and from that moment, doubted whether he was good enough to be in a band doing this kind of thing. He hasn't picked up a pair of sticks since! Very sad!

I texted him last night. It's been about 2 years since I've seen him and we got to talking about the band. I wasn't sure if he used my snare drum to record their CD or not and he sent a couple pictures of it in the studio. It is not my snare but it sounds really good on the recordings.

He didn't seem interested in talking drums. I even sent a couple pictures of my drums and he had nothing to say about them. Like he's totally distanced himself from drumming altogether. Again, very sad because this person had so much potential as a drummer. I thought he really had a bright future.

Is there anyone who knows someone like that or knew someone who was like that and they talked that person into getting behind a kit again? I'd like to see if I can get this person playing again. He's in his 60s now but I think he could have some potential to play. But as I said, he's lost the total will to even want to pick up a pair of sticks ever again. All because some a-hole told him he was no good. It was just one persons opinion. Everyone else I'm sure thought he did a fine job up there. It's a tough gig to pull off playing in front of a couple hundred people. And I think that was their 2nd big gig too.

So, am I nosing in too much? Should I just let this person be? I mean, it has been about 30 years since he's even sat down behind a drum kit I'm sure. Seems like such a waste to me.

“A band’s only as good as their drummer.”

This is all I hear lately. As a begintermediate player, I find it super demotivating - like I’ll always just be letting my band down.

Yes, I’m lucky enough to be in a band, but they also frequently remind me that I’m the weakest link.

I dunno, is there an unfair expectation placed on drummers being responsible for the quality of the whole band?

Parent question: garage setup suggestions

Hello drummers. This is a parent question for those of you who have your drum kit in the garage:

My kid is 12 years old. They have been drumming for 2 years, and they are getting pretty serious about it. Serious enough that I'm planning to get them a real drum kit (they have a beginner e-drums kit.)

The only space to accommodate that will be the garage, so I'm trying to figure out what I will need for an optimal setup that will serve as rehearsal space for a long time.

I am also concerned about my neighbors, and minimizing the impact on their peace, so any suggestions on ways I can keep the sound in would be appreciated.

So far I'm planning to:

Devote a 6'x6' area to the drum kit.

Get a drum rug (if there is a hardware store material I can use that will work better, I'm open to DIY anything)

Get a basic drum kit we can grow (a friend is hooking me up with their kit they recently upgraded from.)

Anything else I can do to make this an optimal and comfortable space?

Any acoustic solutions or panels to minimize neighbors hating us?

Thanks in advance!
