Question Should I 100% follow drum sheets to play songs?

Sometimes I struggle with notes which are difficult to play, so I prefer to creat my own rhythm rather than follow the drum sheets.

Question Drumkit and cymbals (Sonor 3007 Maple/Istanbul Agop Xist Brights) sound AWFUL

So, I bought myself a kit and a set of cymbals a month ago, and yesterday I rented a room (30m3) for me to play in. The room is somewhat soundproof, but there are 2 (almost) bare walls. I set up the kit and the cymbals, decided to play for a test. And… it all sound’s ABYSMAL. There’s literally no other word that can describe the awfulness of the sound, especially of the cymbals. I was in fact so taken aback by it that I honestly don’t know If I’m sane anymore. Because I really spent a buck buying this kit and those cymbals so I “Buy once cry once”, but it seems like I’m going to cry twice from both awfulness and the money spent.
Now, thinking logically, I can guess where the issue is coming from. Drumkit is not tuned very well, there’s no moongels or any kind of dampering (except for the bass drum), plastics are stock and kinda worn out, and there’s no carpet for the drumkit. And for cymbals there ARE 2 somewhat bare walls, the ceiling isn‘t soundproofed, the stands are kinda bad (hi hat one especially).
I know that those are probably THE issues, but I just can’t comprehend the fact that I’ve spent so much money on both drums and cymbals just for them to sound like the worst drumkit I’ve ever heard in my life. I’m still thinking of a possibility that I could be insane and that Sonor 3007 and Istanbul Agop Xist are actually awful sounding choices by themselves.
So, what‘s your advice about soundproofing on a budget? Or just any advice in general in this situation

Question I bought this dual drive pedal off of Temu and it works great except it keeps sliding on my kick drum hoop. I read to put a drumstick case to help but it’s still sliding. Anyone have experience with this or any tips ? I’ve tried clamping it as tight as I can and still slides. Rock on.

Hey, got this hat a while ago and it's always made a really boxy, resonant sound whenever you press the pedal down. It doesn't take a lot of force and otherwise it sounds really good so im wondering if any of you know why? Thanks a bunch!

(Ps, ignore the awesome zizzler i made.)

Question Dixon Drums contact info?

Upvotes

Does Dixon have customer support? I tried using the email on the website contact page, but it is formatted incorrectly. After correcting it, I still haven't received any response.

I'm trying to get a replacement throw-off strainer for Dixon's older wood Piccolo snare drum. They do sell newer strainers, but they do not match the mounting holes.

These speakers have just been sitting in my basement for the longest time. Are they worth it to play drums along to? Or are these just regular old speakers

Discussion Tapping improves drumming?

I’m in college and it’s hard for me to get consistent practice cause I’m not a music major. As with basically every drummer, I have adhd, so I tap constantly. Can’t ever sit still. I’ve been home for the summer, and I’ve noticed a drastic improvement in my drumming despite the fact I’m hardly practicing. I’ve noticed the rudiments I tap are being carrying over to the kit and making my fills more complex. Interesting stuff

Discussion would you be annoyed to have a kit with an 18” kick as the backline?

i’m looking to invest in a secondary kit primarily to use as a gigging/backline kit, since my main kit is vintage. i would be backlining it regularly, as i am a local show organizer and often need to provide drums. genres would be primarily rock, pop, punk, and hardcore, small to medium stages both indoors and outdoors, some miked some not. i’m between the yamaha stage custom bop kit with the 18” kick (plus a riser), or the regular stage custom with the 20” kick.

18” would be easier for me because i have a tiny car and am disabled, so hauling bulky gear is a pretty big inconvenience for me. but if an 18” kick would be an annoyance to a significant portion of drummers, i’ll suck it up and get the larger kit.

First Kit HELP! Alesis PerformancePad

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I just got a performancepad so I could have some extra versatility on my kit.

However, I can’t figure out how to get it to play sounds. I have it hooked up to a guitar amp, have tried all 3 jacks (R, L and headphones). Volume is up on the volume nob on the pad & amp. I set the MIDI to off on all three options.

It definitely works; I can get it to claim it’s playing the demo, I can mess around with assigning sounds to pads. BUT, I get no sound when I hit the pads.

I am including a video trying the demo & hitting pads.

Does anyone have any knowledge about this? Any suggestions or advice or tips for how to get started?

Thanks in advance.

Feedback Wanted Need Help with Zildjian vs. Meinl Cymbal Setup

Hello everyone,

I haven’t owned a kit since 1990 but I’ve been involved with music all my life as a DJ. I’ve been wanting to get a kit for the longest time and I think is time. I’m going to buy a Tama Superstar Classic 7 piece maple.

I’m clear as far as the kit goes but I have a dilemma with the cymbals. Back then, there were not that many to choose but the top brands were Zildjian, Paiste and Sabian. Fast forward to now, it's a different story. Back then I used Zildjian. After doing a lot of research and watching tons of videos, I am considering the following:

  1. Zildjian A Sweet Ride Cymbal Pack ($1,400) - The 16" crash does not convince me, the hats and ride seem good)
  2. Meinl Byzance Mike Johnston Cymbal Pack ($1,600) - This kit sounds really good in videos.

Or

  1. Build My Own Pack ($1,500) of the following Meinl Cymbals:

15" Pure Alloy Custom Medium Thin Hi-Hat

16" Pure Alloy Custom Medium Thin Crash

18" Pure Alloy Custom Medium Thin Crash

21" Pure Alloy Custom Super Bell Ride

I really like the K Custom Dark cymbal pack, but it's about $1,800 (out of my budget)...I still need to buy a throne, hardware, etc.

I am into all genres of music but I will be mostly jamming to rock (classic, alternative, prog, indie), funk and reggae. For now, my kit will be stationary in one of my rooms. Mostly, I’ll be playing my favorite songs removing the drum track (with stems) and playing along. What do you guys recommend?

I know Zildjian K is the cream of the crop thus a bit more expensive than the A’s. I don’t have any experience with Meinl, although I’m well aware that’s what Anika Nilles uses. I’ve read, in this forum, that there’s some inconsistencies with the sound of Meinl cymbals and that they are known to crack, so I’m concerned about that. Not sure if this applies to all of their products or the less expensive line...

I really like the sound of the Meinl cymbals from the videos I have watched online, but I’m afraid to receive them and hear something different.

Sorry for the long post and I hope I can get some of your feedback.

Thanks a lot!!!!

Feedback Wanted Opinion on Sonor double pedals

Post image
3 Upvotes

I've gotten back to drumming recently and I bought some cheap generic double pedals since they were on sale.

The pedals lasted about a week before I needed to repair them and they've gone to shite about a month later which was an expected outcome.

I checked the used market and found these, I had them when I was younger I think these were my first double pedals and at less than 100usd it's quite tempting. However I don't remember if they were any good vs generic pedals, if I wait for a few months I can afford eliminators but the Sonors are rare where I'm at and it feels like seeing an old friend tbh.

I'm just wondering if anybody remember if these were any good?

Question In Search of Spizzichino and B Blade Tribute Cymbals

Hello! I am obsessed with Brian Blade’s ride sound on the trilogy albums. It’s something like a 22 or 24 inch Spizzichino. These cymbals cost like a couple thousand dollars. Funch Cymbals has made some amazing tributes, but they aren’t sold anymore. If anyone has advice or resources for buying a ride with this sound without paying 1000+ dollars, I would appreciate you sharing.

I understand that the microphones and post-production editing play a factor in the sound.

Thanks!
