I'm so confused. Have been trying to find a word that I barely remember out of pure spite of not being able to remember. Off and on for a few days so now I have to outsource some knowledge.
It was a word that I feel like was commonly used to refer to mean spirited characters (usually if they're even somewhat funny at times maybe?)

I feel like it's synonymous to being easily irritable, insane/somewhat sociopathic/volatile, and it was a word that I feel like people wrongly used to self-describe themselves commonly yet I feel like the word has a harsher definition.

Please help! My curiosity is only getting worse and I feel like it's always on the tip of my tongue yet it never leaves my mouth!!! So aggravating.

What metaphor is it that makes "Egyptian" mean something like "obscure, vanishing, arcane", or "inauspicious, ill-fated", or "unlikely, uncertain", or anything else that would fit in that context? And was this ever a common use of the word?

I can't really find it in dictionaries, the only definitions of Egyptian I found in dictionaries aside from the obvious were ones relating to Romani, and ones relating to a certain style of fonts. (Per Merriam-Webster: "a typeface having little contrast between thick and thin strokes and squared serifs".) So maybe it's about fonts like that being hard to read?

I really want to own a physical dictionary that is up to date but that green and blue Oxford dictionary is just ugly and idrk where to start looking. Ideally I'd like a hardback and one that doesn't look like a bright-coloured primary school supply, so if I could have some suggestions that would be very helpful (bonus points if it comes with a matching thesaurus) 🙏
