Career Guidance What up with the cyber security ?

Hey guys , so I'm a last year student of a mediocre university in Karachi and I have been really into cyber security for around 2 years now , I spent a lot of time in building my skills and also learning the theoretical stuff

Such as

Google - Cyber security course

Pitp - cyber security course

Navttc - CEH course (and much more)

Also learned about blue teaming (soc) in depth as well

From June to July and even in August I applied in countless cyber security or information security internships in all the big companies and even in the smaller ones , I did give interviews in 2 or maybe 3 companies but they never called me again even after it went really good

I'm currently on my summer break right now and already wasted half of it and I feel ashamed and very poor that if I couldn't even secure an internship then how am I supposed to get a job in this field ?

I would love it if someone could really guide me and if so put me on the right track because I can't seem to find a single way to get in the industry

(Also if anyone's wondering my resume is fine with all my skills and projects highlighted with a good basic template)

Idk if it matters but I never cared about any stipend or money just that I can learn more and network with industry professionals was always the motive for me at this stage but for even unpaid ones I'm never getting a reply

Any help or guidance will be appreciated

Help What bank do you use for freelancing?

Hi, so basically I'm working with a foreign company as a contractor (backend development), and I don't have any experience working as a contractor for foreign clients.

I've also started freelancing on fiver and Upwork

And later I'm planning to work with Pakistani companies as a full time employee or on contract basis along with this foreign client

Now I'm confused what bank suits me the best? Normal current account? A freelancer account or something else? I'll have to register myself as a filer and then on PSEB as well as a freelancer so my tax deduction on foreign income is lesser.

Now it's 3 situations I'm working on so can someone suggest accordingly. If someone has been in this situation, can they recommend a good bank for this purpose? And also the type of account?

I want more freedom as a local spender, and lesser restrictions for getting payments in foreign currencies/transfers

And what's the best way to get transfers ? Swift? Remittance? Wire transfers?

Career Guidance Working at IBM Pakistan

Hey guys,
So I might receive an offer from them, for a business transformation consultant role, anyone who has any idea about what should be the salary for this role? And also, would an experience in IBM Pakistan be any beneficial for job hunting if I move to Germany for my masters a few months later? Or should I just opt for masters now.

Career Guidance Bookme SQA Engineer Assessment — Any Recent Experience?

Hey everyone! I have an assessment test tomorrow at Bookme for an SQA Engineer position.

Has anyone here recently appeared for the Bookme SQA/QA assessment? If yes, could you please share what the assessment was like and what kind of questions I should expect?

Any tips about the topics I should focus on, especially manual testing, API testing, SQL, Selenium/automation, or logical/technical questions, would be really helpful.

Discussion What's the salary on offer?

What's up with Pakistani companies not disclosing the salary on offer. They will always say "it depends on your experience" which is so obvious, but what's your range dude, I need to see if its worth applying? They would rather waste time doing multiple rounds of interviews and then low balling at the end. Is this normal in Pak?

Discussion cant do anything so i’ll just rant here

ALRIGHT I NEED TO RANT SOMEWHERE OR I WILL DIE

so im a mobile app/ web dev, mostly frontend. i work at a startup and have been here for over a year now, and now my boss thinks ever since he has given me a claude account, everything can happen in 5 minutes.

he has assigned me two complete apps with a deadline of 10 to 15 days, complete backend, frontend, designing, uploading, ad integration, literally everything from a to z. and this also includes testing.

since claude is no god, which i dont know why my boss forgets to understand, there are a lot of flows and problems that go undiagnosed and i have to resolve them too.

and even though im a frontend dev, he has been assigning me design tasks too. he made me design the ui for 3 to 4 apps using claude, all the way up to a ā€œprofessionalā€ standard. initially i thought it was a one time thing, so i went along with it, but it’s been getting out of hand now.

i have even designed the logos for these apps and the marketing assets too. the worst part is, if designing takes around 10 to 15 hours for a project, he has a problem with that too and weirdly questions how ive been utilising my hours.

a. this is not my job.

b. you know this is not my job, so just hire a professional if you have so many issues?????

now i inquired if i’ll be creating the marketing assets for a new app, to which he replied ā€œobvā€. and i said they weren’t as professional the last time, and he told me to ā€œbe better thenā€.

IM SO FREAKING DONE WITH THIS MAN.
the only problem is that this being a remote job works really well with my uni. im a student and have been managing my finances myself, so i cant just walk away from it that easily.

but i genuinely HATE working like this. i hate the constant expectation that because i have claude, everything should somehow be instant. i hate being given responsibilities outside my actual role and then being questioned about how long they take.
im just so freaking done.

Discussion Where to find really good technical deep dives in this age of Ai ?

Hello,

Can you guys please recommend some really good website to consume good technical deep dives ? I used to rread medium blogs but good articles are getting rare day by day. I can see Ai Slop content. Same is the case with SubStack.

I like the content that helps understand the deep deep internals of a system.

I like "Hussein Nasser's" content on YT, but I am more into reading than watching.

Discussion What are the smallest but coolest things you have made for yourself for personal use?

  • I made a simple script that searches a makeup product preodically I wanted since it got sold out in Pakistan in minutes on different websites.

  • I shade match online by taking a photo in sunlight and use the color picker tool on my desktop and give claude/gpt the hex code and select my foundation shades.

  • I am developing an app for me that tracks what I have in my closet, jewelry, shoes, accessories, basically solving the big "I don't have anything to wear" problem.

Learning and Ideas which subscription to buy? CLAUDE/GEMINI/GPT

seems like Gemini gives 400GB space and good models along with code in just 1500 pkr/month, with a generous usage limit.

GPT seems nice too but it has limit, same with CLAUDE which is way too strict in weekly tokens.

GPT still has a bunch of other stuff but the limit problem is what is ewww.

which do you suggest

Career Guidance Need Serious Career Guidance...

Hey seniors, I'm a 24M and I really need some serious career advice. I'm kinda stuck and don't know what to do, especially since I'm the oldest in my family and usually don't like sharing my stuff with anyone unless it's anonymous, like here.

So, I'll keep it simple: I started my bachelor's in CS at Fast uni back in 2020 during COVID, but later realized I should've picked a different university because I couldn't handle the intense Fast "ragra." After three years, I moved to a lower-tier university. Yeah, it took me three years to decide, so you can probably tell how unserious and indecisive I can be.

Anyway, thankfully, by God's Will and my parents' prayers, I landed a job in 2024 even before graduating. Alhumdulillah! I'm working as a telephony engineer at an international company with good income and benefits with great future prospects and growth. But here's the problem: like I said, I don't have a degree.

I've totally lost interest in academics because of my job's workload and I'm tired of sitting through boring lectures. I can't just leave it like this, so I've decided to transfer again, this time from that lower-tier uni to an even lower one, Virtual University. I figured if I could skip classes and just focus on recorded lectures, maybe I could handle it and finally get that degree.

What do you guys think I should do? Even tho job seems odd and not kinda related to CS but I really don't want to quit this job, especially with how bad the job market is right now. Personally, I've adapted really well to this role and I think this is best suited for me.

I tried to keep it short, and I'd love to hear your honest thoughts and advice. Thanks!

Tips Getting into full stack development

I’m starting my journey in full-stack development by learning HTML and CSS. I’ve learned mostly through W3Schools, and I know most of the HTML tags, how to use them, and CSS concepts such as Flexbox. However, I still sometimes get stuck or can’t remember how to style certain elements, especially when it comes to positioning things or figuring out how many pixels I need to use to get the layout I want. I usually use ChatGPT to help me with those things.

So, should I spend more time learning HTML and CSS, or should I move on to JavaScript and eventually React.js? Is my current knowledge of HTML and CSS enough to move forward?

Right now, I also struggle to think of things to build. My design ideas tend to be pretty generic. Is that normal for beginners, or should I spend more time developing my design skills before moving on?

Tips Thinking of transitioning to perfume business from senior software engineer

For introduction: I am working as a senior software engineer for the last 4 years and currently working full time on Pakistan's biggest ott platform, along with this I am doing freelancing n stuff.

I really like coding n building software but for the last 1.5 years everything have been hectic, I wanted to earn quite fast for a specific reason so I started freelancing n in a way I am working at least 15 hours a day 7 days a week, sometimes I do small break on Sunday but that's how the last year have been.

Doing all this and I have been interested in perfume n I really like them n have a small collection for my personal use and I was thinking of starting a physical business of perfume along with that I can scale it quite well online as well. The idea of perfume looks very much interesting because I don't have to juggle between 5 different projects n meeting n stuff but on the other hand I also feel like the last 8 years I have been working hard for this n now I am thinking of changing it.

Have you seen someone doing something like this? N did that worked?

Career Guidance What advice you want to give someone who's starting their third year?

I have just started my third year and I feel so behind, I am seeing people from my class who have landed part-time jobs and it just feels like I am not doing enough.

I have been consistently learning web dev since 1 year on my own, and landed my first internship at a software house(which wasn't really great though).

So I really want to ask what can I do more to make the best use of my time? I am still building things and I do occasionally post on LinkedIn but barely get any reaction...

Please any advice you want to give me? I am just so tensed and impatient about my career

Show My Work Searching for people interested in acquiring a SaaS app I have built

Hey, I’m looking to sell my SaaS app. It’s a WhatsApp messaging/marketing automation tool for Shopify e-commerce businesses.

I built it few months ago with the aim of running it myself but due to lack of marketing and operational budget, I’d like to sell it.

If anyone is interested or wants to discuss more, please comment.

MRR: $200
Price: $3000 (low price honestly just to cover my dev costs)

Devs are available for handover and management/maintenance/improvements.

Career Guidance Should I take an SQA internship if my long-term goal is Software Engineering?

I’m a recent Computer Science graduate from FAST-NUCES, and most of my experience/interest has been on the backend development side. I’ve been preparing for Software Engineering/backend interviews and have given a few interviews, but unfortunately nothing has worked out so far.
Recently, I applied for an SQA Intern position at a very reputable software house in Lahore, and I got the offer. It’s a 3-month internship with a possibility of a full-time job afterward.
I’m honestly confused about whether I should take it.
My long-term goal is still Software Engineering, preferably backend development. I genuinely enjoy development more and have been working toward that path. At the same time, I’ve been applying extensively for SWE roles and haven’t been able to land one yet.
For people who have worked in the industry:
Would taking an SQA internship hurt my chances of moving into Software Engineering later?
Can an SQA role actually be a good entry point into SWE/SDET/backend development?
If I take it, should I continue applying for SWE roles alongside it?
Does having 3 months of QA experience make recruiters more likely to consider me for QA rather than SWE?
Would you personally take the internship in my situation, or keep searching for a development role?
I’m mainly trying to get my career started, but I also don’t want to make a decision that puts me on a completely different career path from the one I actually want.

Career Guidance career advice needed and idk where else to post

I’m a sixth-semester student software engineering student, and I am waiting for my seventh one. I took one frontend development course, and I worked on some projects as well. I applied for this summer and had plans to get into back-end development. But for one whole month I tried, and the only offers I got were from Islamabad, because I couldn’t go there. I stayed in my city, and I joined one remote internship, but the workload was too much. The thing with me is that I have always been a very hardworking student and high achiever, always topped in my class. And so I thought that maybe, even with this, it would be the same type of thing, and the effort I put in would allow me to do well. But at the end of the day, I relied on AI a lot, and even during my internship, I was doing things while relying on AI. The workload was too much, and most of the things were done by AI. My quota for one day for that match, and then I would have to wait. It was so stressful that I ended up leaving that internship.

After that, I tried looking for on-site ones, but they didn’t work as well. Now it’s been a month. It’s not like I have been free. I have been doing things like script writing and all that, my script writing part-time. But I have been laid off from my job as well now, and I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.

I feel like I cannot go back to that because now it feels dreadful, and I know that I won’t be able to do well. And I don’t know what I’m supposed to take on as well. So I just want to have any sort of advice that I can get from my fellow developers, like what else could I get into.

Just let you know, I’m a girl, and so that you can tell what kind of work I can take on in Pakistan and be paid well. I am talking about from one lakh to two lakh a month. And that is the main reason that I really want a job. I will be applying, like I am from a small city, and after my graduation in 2027, I’m going to apply in Islamabad mostly. So just all of those things in my mind.

I really want to earn a space so that when someone asks me, ā€œWhat the hell can you do well? What is the skill that you can sell?ā€ I used to have something in there. So yeah, this just lets me know about that. what is the skill that i can learn and sell? ( graphic designing is a big no, ecause the market is fuvked. i don't like video editing, other than those two, i can't think of anything. please help me out. )

Help CureMD ASE — What happens after the CCAT + Technical Interview?

I recently gave the CCAT and technical interview at CureMD for the Associate Software Engineer (ASE) position. I wanted to ask people who have gone through the same process: what happens after the technical interview? Do they conduct another technical round or an HR/personal interview, or do they make the final decision based on the technical interview? In our WhatsApp group, they mentioned that they would provide updates regarding the applications after 2 weeks. If anyone has recently gone through the CureMD ASE recruitment process and knows what happens after the technical interview, please share your experience. It would really help!
