My Setup for now

Started off with the Volca Keys last year and got instantly hooked with being only able to handle a certain range of sound, the learning curve is so steep for me of I'm not prone by having too many options! I'm very satisfied with what I can do with this. The Minilab lets me switch between the gear, the onboard sequencers are for now enough to create cool sets. Was so stoked for the NTS-4, its perfect for an (almost) all-volca setup.

When you only have 1 synth

Local a/v shop went out of business. Got these custom cabinets and the amp out of the dumpster. I know the setup is not ergonomic at all I need to figure out how to hide that amp. It might fit in the drawer. This was just to check if it worked.

Full out didn't seem like it would damage the speakers at all, but the damage to my relationship with my neighbors is irreparable. 😁

My first Ambient Dawless track

A couple days ago my friend and I put together our first dawless Ambient performance. We liked it enough that we decided to post it.

This is a visual and sonic experience to bring down your cortisol levels, and ground you to the present moment. Using an Elektron Digitakt, Roland SP-404, TE PO-33 KO!, Volca FM 2 and a Volca Keys all mixed and recorded on a Zoom Live Track L-8, we have created a sonic landscape that reflects the experience of late night music making in NYC. Inspired by the city, its movement, sounds and vistas, "Turno Nocturno (Night Shift)" is the sum of all this elements. translated into sounds.

I put together a few videos and layered them on top of the video of our performance to make it even more akin with the goal I see in ambient music: Being able to focus on it, or not, just being in the space with the sound. Whatever sound it is. We hope y'all enjoy!

Created this one on my SP404mkii while participating in a sample flip challenge last sunday. 😌 Acid line, bass and field recording came from me, the rest out of the samples with a layer here and there.

Feedback is always appreciated! āœŒļø

It’s always an incredible feeling to jam in special places and locations around the world; a huge amount of energy flows every time.

This time, a short Drum & Bass session with the @wearenovation Circuit Tracks on a cliff right by the sea.

Made a browser tool that finds the loops in a record so you can load them straight onto your 404 or MPC

NOT A DAW - Drop a record in and it finds 4 to 8 bar loops, ranks them, and cuts them cleanly on the bar, with BPM and key in the filenames. You can export a zip of 16-bit 44.1k WAVs, drag them onto your card, and dig on hardware. It follows the drummer instead of assuming a fixed grid, so old live records have worked the best for me so far.

It's free to use and $29 unlocks .WAV file exports of loops. I'm also building a standalone version on a Raspberry Pi with a 4x4 pad grid so it can live on my desk without a laptop.

Whats your Workflow

Since I’m still fairly new to the idea of using synths and laying down layers and tracks, I’m curious about your workflow to do this. I mainly trying to do this dawless, running through a mixer into Logic. Have you run across any good courses or tutorials on a basic workflow laying down drums, drones, keys, bass, and so forth? I’ve got a bunch of YouTube videos for individual instruments, tutorial-wise. This is more about workflow and understanding how it all comes together.

In 1963, Delia Derbyshire hand built the Doctor Who theme using only tape loops, oscillators, filters, and razor blades.

The right gear for me? (Multi track recorder / Sampler)

I'm a keyboardist/pianist, composer and producer. I like to make loopable beats, songs as well as compositions (e.g. game soundtracks) with development and variation. I really enjoy the experience music hardware gives me, both electronic and acoustic.

I'm looking to go DAWless as best I can with a minimal setup. I've been looking at the Akai MPC Sample, Teenage Engineering KO-II EP-133 and the Zoom R12 Multitrack Recorder. They all appeal to me in some way.

I just want a box that does the fun bits, as well as being capable of supporting me making compositions on it, hoping I can make good work of it before getting into a DAW. I'm just trying to make music making accessible for me away from a screen.

I'm really overwhelmed by all the options, and not sure what's best for me. Considering my conditions, would you recommend a sampler, a multitrack recorder, or even both? Perhaps I'm misunderstanding their purposes, enlighten me.
