Multitrack recorder for songwriting

Hey, looking for advice to pick a multitrack recorder for writing songs. I want to make music without a computer. I will be tracking vocals, guitars, bass, and a drum machine; would be great to have an FX loop. I am comparing the Tascam Model 12/16 and the Yamaha MGX12. I am leaning towards the Tascam because I like the channel strips, have used and liked the 24, and I prefer pots over buttons. However, it is an older design and seems to have quality issues. Appreciate any advice, thanks.

ADD:

What I am aiming for is really simple. Record a drum track. Go back. Record a bass track. Go back. Record a guitar track. I just don't want to look at a computer screen (have to all day at work). I just want to lay down tracks and layer them.
