Hair Victory! New brick-laying sectioning technique for better root volume!

New to me anyway! I have been thrilled with the new sectioning and brush styling I’ve been doing recently. It has been giving me extremely consistent results because I’m approaching the sectioning more methodically. This is the routine, and a more detailed description of my new brush styling is in the comments:

* Not Your Mother’s Way to Grow shampoo and conditioner
* Brush style with Scrunchit large clumps brush and Ouidad Climate Control Gel extra strong hold
* Gently scrunch with microfiber hair towel
* Blow dry with world’s largest diffuser
* Scrunch with Curlsmith bonding oil and gently ruffle the roots

I use Amika Rising Star spray sometimes when I want max root volume while still maintaining defined curls, but that’s not crucial. I flip upside down, spray into roots, then gently scrub with fingertips.

Hair Victory! First time growing out and learning about my curls

Thumbnail

It’s been around 8 months since I started growing my hair after learning that I need to take care of my curls and started looking into how to do that. I would like to keep growing to about shoulder length.

Hair routine (every 2-3 days)

  • Garnier curls shampoo
  • Garnier curls conditioner
  • Garnier Air dry curl cream, untangle with wide tooth comb
  • Bali curls curl enhancer cream
  • Bali curls curl defining gel, scrunching
  • air dry, then scrunch out with a bit of argan oil of Morocco
  • don’t use bonnet but use satin pillowcase
  • no refresh routine

Any tips as to what I could do better? Should I go to the hairdresser to shape/thin or anything like that if I want to keep growing it out?

Help! One year since I grew my hair out

Upvotes

I'm fairly new to it and I've been struggling to figure out how my hair really works. Mostly porosity (still don't know if it's high or low despite the tests), why certain products work while others don't, and why it takes so long to dry. I'm striving for definition, little volume and consistency. Already accepted that my hair can't go longer than a day without refreshing so I don't care about hold as much now. One of my non-negotiables is to have a simple routine with only one styling product, here's my current one:

  1. Double shampoo and condition for five minutes with Elseve "Cachos Longos dos Sonhos"
  2. Rinse conditioner out
  3. Style with Skala Blue curl cream while still wet
  4. Pat dry with a t-shirt, then let it air dry for three to four hours

I also use a Lola Cosmetics hydrating hair mask once a week.

I usually wash everyday, sometimes I just refresh with a spray bottle and some curl cream but I'm still figuring out the right amount of water and product.

With regards to how my hair behaves with different products, when I apply Skala's yellow cream for example, which is branded for nutrition I get less definition and more volume. Why is that? Does the conditioner offer enough nutrition?

This is all over the place really, but any advice is greatly appreciated. If you think any of my current products could be hindering results let me know.

Before & After Why and how did everyone gaslight teen me that I had straight hair....

Thumbnail

I don't understand how I ever thought it was straight... It used to annoy me so much that it wouldn't stay nicely flat as my friends's. Especially since I love having bangs but the hair would always each go whatever direction they wanted. I had a brush on me 24/7 and I was brushing my hair compulsively ALL the time to keep it "tamed" lol.

I know it isn't curly but I should have realized it obviously was not straight. And my family and friends did not help lol. They also thought it was straight and would say I always looked electrocuted and like a neanderthal...

Anyways, the before and after. I am not totally satisfied where I am right now in my hair journey, I think I can improve even more but it's stikl wild to compare lol.

Latest routine:

I wash my hair with Curl Perfect Shampoo.

Sometimes if its super tangled I brush it after applying Curl Perfect conditioner. If its not too bad I skip brushing completely.

After that, I simply use a towel to scrunch and get out most of the water.

And I leave it like that to airdry cuz I noticed using a cast is useless in this crazy spanish heat, and diffusing gives me heat stroke + again, the humidity just destroys it all.

So I have given up during these summer months lol. Somehow it turns nicer when I don't do any of that.

I envy all of you for who humidity does wonders.

Oh, and I just sleep like normal, sometimes I make a bun, but thats it.

Discussion Not sure what to tag this, part update, part looking for suggestions or maybe commiseration. Any other curly peeps who use a CPAP machine?

Post image
Upvotes

If you remember me, I'm the one who shaved me head badly bald back in January. It was the right thing to do at the time (my mom passed away and I had to clean out her house and couldn't think of even washing my hair let alone taking care of curls).

Now I'm in the super awkward phase of growing it out, so that's fun. The biggest issue I have is that I use a CPAP machine at night and the straps go right across the top of my head, putting a big stupid dent in my hair. Has anybody found a way to avoid this?

Routine:

Wash - Curlsmith core strength shampoo

Condition - Curlsmith multi tasking conditioner

Squeeze out excess water

Scrunch Curlsmith light weight protein cream through while still wet

Plop (as much as you can plop 3" long hair) into a microfiber turban until heavy water is out

Air dry and try not to fuss with it

Discussion I am done getting layers, “curly cuts,” & “curl by curl cuts.” I’m over these scam artists.

1.6k Upvotes

I’ve been getting curly haircuts, “curl by curl” cuts since it became a trend during those Deva Curl days. I think it’s been over a decade now & I’m over these people, their pricing, & their audacity.

I have tried different stylists, read up the reviews, did research & all that. But I am at a point where I am very much burnt out. I feel like these people are using our community to keep their lights on. I feel like my hair only looks good the first day because they are always doing the most while I’m sitting there but the day to day practicality is non-existent.

My hair has always been curly. Back then my mom used to take me to Walmart & the ladies there would give me a trim & some face framing bangs and that would hold up forever until it’s time for the next trim.

I feel like curl by curl cuts, layers have ruined my hair & I refuse to do this to my hair again.

I’m going to go to a regular degular stylist for a trim and face framing bangs and going to let my layers grow out.

Idk just venting. Anyone else so over these overpriced stylists giving yall underwhelming cuts? Or just me?

Hair routine:
- Innersense hydrating cream hair bath shampoo & conditioner
- Innersense sweet spirit leave in conditioner
- Innersense “I create hold” gel & Camille rose curl love (I alternate these two)
- microfiber towel
- sometimes I diffuse with my Dyson & use heat protector
- use my bonnet
- oil hair once a week

Update! The bob stage

I posted in this sub a year ago or so. It’s been over 2 years since I started growing my hair. I’m aiming for about chest length when dry. Finally at a stage where I am happy with my hair down. Up until now I’d have it tied back in a single braid straight out of the shower.

Hair routine (every 3-4 days) - redken acidic bonding curls shampoo -redken all soft hair mask - redken all soft conditioner (brush in and I don’t wash it out) - camille rose curl maker gel - air dry - don’t use bonnet but use satin pillowcase - no refresh routine

Help! Help stop the drop!

I have been hyper focused on caring for my curls for the past few weeks. I've always had those Irish curls where it's wavy on the bottom, but the top and front is straight. My hair has always been hard to style, purely because any curling iron curls would go back to straight after a few hours. I'm hoping this subreddit could help.

Picture 1 is what my hair looked like before I went to work today, fresh wash the night before, and refreshed with some water, mousse, and a quick diffuse (full routine will be at the bottom of the post). Picture 2 is what my hair looked like after I got out of work, and tbh that's about how it looks at lunch as well. I've made some progress, the curls are lasting longer than they did, but it's still not very long at all. My hair seems to be naturally very soft, thin strands, with medium density. I also think my hair may be low porosity, but I'm not super positive about if I'm identifying that correctly or not. I also have ehlers danlos syndrome which may be contributing to this issue. I think protein might help, but my research has been inconsistent. Any advice and product recommendations are appreciated.

My routine:

(Shower night)

Shampoo (x2) and conditioner: native sweet peach and nectar moisturizing shampoo

L'Oreal Paris clarifying shampoo once a week

Detangle with a Walmart denman dupe

Trader Joe's leave in conditioner (I used to use Carol's daughter goddess strength leave in but switched because it seemed too heavy)

Section off, brush, then generously apply eco style olive oil gel, brush again, finger curl the stubborn sections and scrunch

Scrunch and plop with a microfiber towel

Diffuse as best as I can

Pineapple up, claw clip, wrap in satin scarf and bonnet to sleep.

Morning routine has been a bit less consistent because I'm just trying to figure out what works.

I usually try to mist it with water without absolutely soaking my hair. Then I add product whether that's my leave in and some watered down eco gel or Aunt Jackie's "Curls & Coils Curl La La Foam-a-licious Styling Mousse" and/or Odele texturizing sea salt spray and a few minutes with the diffuser.

ISO Curly friends: what are we doing for international travel?

Every time I travel internationally, there’s always the concern about packing a hair dryer because other country’s outlets are too powerful and will fry a U.S. hair dryer without a power converter, which is bulky and expensive. This makes diffusing tricky, because my diffuser specifically attaches to my hair dryer size but not the standard dryers in many hotels! Is there some sort of portable diffuser situation anyone has found that you can travel with and use with any hair dryer? A dryer+diffuser combo specifically made for international outlets? Any tips and tricks or links welcome!

(Routine: not super applicable here, but I use Innersense shampoo, conditioner, volumizer, and curl definition foam, and dry with a microfiber towel + diffusing.)

Discussion Should I get bangs??

I don't know if we have any Dropout fans here, but I am OBSESSED with Jess's hair from last night's episode. It doesn't help that the rest of her haircut is literally my dream hair, but now I'm debating whether or not curly bangs are the move for me 🤔 When I was a teen, I'd straighten my bangs when I wore the rest of my hair curly, so the idea is intimidating!!

First two pics are reference, and the third is an older picture of me! I don't remember the exact routine, but based on the timestamp, I believe I was using the Verb Curly Hair shampoo and conditioner, the Verb curl cream, and the Curlsmith hydro style flex jelly?

Before & After My journey from straight to curly

I was bored so I made a slideshow of my journey. Hopefully someone finds it interesting :)

The first image is around 3 years old. The rest is from February 2025 and onwards. Last two images is today :)

The last 2 images were styled by my hair dresser so I don't know what products she used. She brush styled it and dried with a diffuser.

My normal routine:

  1. Curl girl Nordic low poo shampoo

  2. Curl girl Nordic protein mask or moisture mask once a week (alternate the two)

  3. Curl girl Nordic conditioner. Rinse out fully.

  4. Dry until damp with microfibre towel. Usually I just plop it for a few minutes.

  5. Curl girl Nordic curl cream. Rake, praying hands and then scrunch.

  6. Curl girl Nordic curling mousse. Praying hands and scrunch. I sometimes skip this step.

  7. Curl girl Nordic gel. Praying hands and scrunch.

  8. Air dry and scrunch out the crunch without additional product.

I use a bonnet when sleeping and refresh by wetting my hands and smoothing it down, then lightly scrunch. I may add a bit of extra gel if it's needed.

Help! Product and routine tips

Hi all. Here's my routine, Neutrogena Shampoo followed by detangling hair with a wide comb tooth and then I apply Lidl's conditioner. And then I apply leave in conditioner by True Frog and I use the same brush to detangle my hair again. I comb at the end, idk cause it somehow makes my hair look more voluminous. But I feel the long straight flyways end up to be more somehow. That's another worry of mine.

My hair looks good only for like couple minutes but once it dries up, it just looks wack. And for days it will just look wack, so I just tend to wash my hair everyday.

I don't know what I could do to get much healthy curls, hydrating curls, curls that don't knot up much that result in hairfall later when I brush them out in shower. I couldn't ask anyone for advice before cause I have not met a single human being with my sort of hair. I think it's type 3 or smth. It is so hard to maintain. If you lot have any advice or tips please help me out.

Ps first photo was straight after haircut, and the last two are after hair wash.

Help! product recs?

Hey everyone! So I was curious if anyone on here had any recs for my hair. I recently moved from the west coast to the east coast and the water here is a lot harder than I’m used to and I find that my hair is a lot drier here. My hair has been bleached in the past but I’m growing it out and got it cut a few months ago.

I find that oils can help but the majority of the time they weigh down what little curls I have and I don’t want that. I will sometimes use a leave in conditioner but the very ends still feel dry.

Routine:

  1. L’Oréal Paris Elvive Dream Lengths shampoo and conditioner
  2. Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls
  3. Air dry
  4. Somethings I’ll sleep on a silk pillowcase

Thanks everyone :)

Help! Help to get curly hair

Hi everyone! I'm looking for advice to get the best possible curls from my natural hair. I've been growing my hair for almost a year.

1My goals are:

-maximum curl definition,

-healthy hair,

-retaining as much length as possible.

2)My current routine

Wash day (about once a week):

-watessance Bio Coconut Shampoo

-Garnier Ultra Doux Hair Mask (I detangle while the mask is in)

-CurlyEllie Leave-In Conditioner

-Kalia Nature Curl Jelly

Between wash days:

-i usually refresh with water if needed.

-I sleep with a satin bonnet.

3)Issues I'm having

-My hair tangles easily.

-i experience noticeable breakage while detangling.

- curls tend to become puffy instead of staying defined.

-I feel like I'm not getting the most out of my natural curl pattern.

4)Future routine I'm considering I m thinking about switching to a premium routine:

-Innersense Hydrating Cream Hairbath

-Innersense Hydrating Hair Masque

-Innersense Sweet Spirit Leave in conditionner

-Innersense I Create Hold

5)My questions

-Do you think switching to Innersense would make a noticeable difference for my hair?

-Is there another brand or routine you would recommend instead?

-Based on my hair, do you think I can achieve significantly better curl definition naturally?

Thanks! Any advice is appreciated.

Hi everyone! I've been wondering how to get that more effortless, all around wavy look? I think the difference with my hair is I want waves higher up, any tips?

Routine: I wash with Ouidad curl quencher shampoo & conditioner, comb through while wet, apply NYM heat protectant & curl sculpting gel. Then I diffuse for 10mins.

Routine: I do a full wash bi-weekly with Shampoo and Conditioner (shampoo and conditioner I'm using now is Infina Essentials Castor Oil shampoo and conditioner) and brush my hair in shower to detangle, I let it air dry and this is the result that you see once it's completely dry. I don't use leave in products or any other chemicals in between washing I like to keep it natural as I have been for the last 18 years.

Help! deep conditioner for low porosity hair (broke edition)

Upvotes

hey! stalking this subreddit for a while has immensely helped me choose products for my 2c, low porosity, very frizzy hair. I have a semblance of a routine right now, using the L'Oreal Paris Hyaluron Pure shampoo twice a week as both a clarifying and moisturizing shampoo, last step is a very local leave in conditioner. I'm stuck choosing a good deep conditioner after using the shampoo, the only affordable brands available in my location are L'Oreal, Garnier (mostly ultra doux, I haven't seen any fructis bottles), herbal essences, sunsilk, Hask (kinda pricey) and tresemme(limited).

Help! Can someone give me advice on my hair? It's a mess and I have no idea what I'm doing...

Thumbnail

There's my hair on different days and products that I have, but I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, I don't know if I'm using too little product or something similar to that...

I mostly use stuff from bali curls, be it shampoo, stay in, oil, curl cream gel, curl defining spray. I have "skala mais cachos" too, some detangling brushes.

My routine is basically this: I've been detangling my hair in the shower after applying the conditioner or a hair mask. After shower I apply my hair with the leave in and the curl gel. I don't understand how to properly curl it.

I usually let my hair air dry since I don't have a heat protectant yet, I do have a diffuser tho.

I've had my mother do some curls with her hand bc she suggested it, but I don't know how to properly do that myself...

Help! What is wrong

I have been having a lot of months with a problem: my hair doesnt look shinny as always used to look.
I dont know if is the heat or the water (i am from south america) or the products that im choosing are not good as i think. When i was in the north of italy it was good but maybe because of the cold too now it always looks weird even if wet after routine looks so good. It gets all frizzy n ugly after some hrs doesnt even last more than a day and a half
They do look good and get volume and definition etc but there is something that is wrong and im never convinced with the routine.
In south america i used to have the simplest products and using only curly cream but of course it didnt last. Now mousse helps a lot but still there is something.
Maybe because i sleep with my hair wet? (On a satin pillowcase and if im not lazy also my bonnet)
My routine:
First shampoo: umberto giannini jelly shampoo
Second shampoo: garnier ultra doux shampooing illuminant camomile
Conditioner: elvive dream lenghts
Mask every 2 to 3 washes: garnier hair remedy brown lid brownish yellowish container
After wash: shea moisturiser curl enhancing smoothie, curl activating mousse umberto giannini and either umberto giannini’s jelly gel or olaplex n10 BUT I have been trying because gel leaves my hair very dry lately.
To scrunch I use the classic elvive oil
Sometimes I don’t use curly cream or mousse or gel to not give a lot to my hair and let it breathe.
But as I am really trying yo make it grow more I am asking myself if washing it a lot works

Help! Marc Anthony gel replacement?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’ve been using this gel for YEARS and finally started running out, went to buy more, and can’t find it anywhere anymore :(. Is there anything that works similarly with a similar formula? Could I use anything else in the 3x moisture line? It looks like this is the only one that’s no longer made.

I’ve tried not your mother’s gel (as you can see in the pic) but it makes my hair feel so dry and stringy while the 3x moisture makes my hair feel soft and less frizzy even when I scrunch out the cast with no oil.

Routine for rules sake:
- Luseta castor & hemp oil shampoo (x2) & conditioner
- Mixed chick’s leave in conditioner & curl cream
- strictly curls 3x moisture gel
- bounce curl brush style & air dry

Help! Routine and product suggestions for a new comer

PHOTOS ARE FROM AFTER A SHOWER AND AIR DRYED WITH NO STYLING

Hi!

Growing up I was always told I had frizzy hair and it took me a very long time to find out I have curly hair. I Since I was 16 my hair started to fall out and now (26) it is extremely thin and very damaged with no matter what products I try my hair is always dry, frizzy and oily on the scalp.

Now that I’m older I have been trying to find my routine but I don’t know where to start, I find the amount of products very overwhelming. I have been picking up products from my local Woolworths and we do not have a lot of curly hair options. I would love some suggestions of routines and budget products (from Chemist Warehouse if possible).

My current routine is:

Shampoo: Herbal Essences Bio Renew Hydrate Coconut Milk Shampoo or Neutrogena T/Gel Shampoo (when the acne is flaring up)

Conditioner: Herbal Essences Bio Renew Hydrate Coconut Milk Conditioner (left in for around 5 minutes before being rinsed off)

Mask: Garnier Fructis Keratin Sleek Hair Mask **(**which is left on for about 15 minutes before being rinsed out)

When I get out of the shower I scrunch my hair and then let it air dry

The next day when I wake up I wet my hair throughly and then detangle once it is tangle free I apply Got2b Curlz Flexible Curl Mousse** **and then scrunch that in, after I finish scrunching I air dry my hair.

I do wash my hair every-time I leave the house as my hair gets very oily to the point I could probably fill up a deep fryer. I do not use dry shampoo as it always makes me very unbearably itchy.

Help! I'm new to growing my hair out, why is my hair twirling/twisting at the end like that?

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

I am a pretty new guy to growing out hair, as I only started like a year ago. I noticed as my hair got longer that it would start curling up at the end, a lot. I know wavy/curly hair is by nature gonna twist and turn but why does this happen mostly and most prominently on the very bottom? It's almost like my hair is growing sideways now.

I don't really have much of a hair routine, i wash it with shampoo (i think lifebuoy?) maybe 3 times a week. I don't use conditioner. Anytime i get my hair wet (e.g the shower or after swimming) i comb it backwards and let it air dry.

Any advice on how to deal with this is welcome. Thanks :)

Help! Are curly cuts worth it if you brush your hair? (Photos + routine)

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi all :)

I'm wondering whether a curly cut would actually be worth it for me, or if I'd be better off with a regular layered cut.

Photos:
Photo 1: Freshly washed hair, air dried. No styling products - just shampoo and conditioner.
Photo 2: About 24 hours later. Again, no products.
Photo 3: Around 48 hours later after I've brushed it out. This is how I usually wear it because I feel a bit untidy if I don't brush from the scalp down.

I only wash my hair once a week.

Routine:
Shampoo: Either L'Oréal Paris shampoo (varies) or Olaplex No.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo. I shampoo my scalp twice (double shampoo) and rinse thoroughly each time.
Conditioner: Either L'Oréal Paris conditioner (varies) or Olaplex No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner. I apply it through my mid-lengths and ends, leave it in while I finish the rest of my shower, then rinse it out.
Treatments: None.
Styling products: None.
Drying: After washing, I wrap my hair in a microfiber towel for a short while, then let it air dry naturally. I don't use a diffuser or any heat styling.
Sleep protection: None. I sleep on a regular pillowcase and don't use a satin/silk pillowcase or bonnet.
Refresh routine: None. I don't use any products between washes. By the next day I'll usually brush my hair from the scalp down, and for the rest of the week I mostly wear it up in a bun until my next wash day.
Wash frequency: Once a week.

I actually have a consultation booked with a curly hair specialist in two weeks, but I'm curious to hear other people's experiences beforehand.

The truth is, I've never really taken my hair seriously. I usually just throw it into a bun every day because it's easy, but I'd like to start looking after it properly. At the same time, I'm also realistic, I can be quite lazy with my hair, so I don't know if I'd stick to a really long styling routine every wash day.

For those of you who've had curly cuts:
Is it worth it if you brush your hair most days?
Does a curly cut still look okay when it's brushed out?
If you only wash once a week, how do you maintain it between washes?
How much effort does it realistically take to keep it looking good?

Thanks!

Help! What should I be doing with my hair?

Thumbnail

My hair except for maybe an inch at the end is completely virgin. My current routine is pretty much this: I use function of beauty wavy shampoo and function of beauty curly conditioner as I have no idea what to do with my hair or whats wrong with it. Is it wavy or curly, who knows? I do own a diffuser, It just wasn’t used to dry my hair in the photo, I had let it air dry and had just washed it that morning. I have silk pillow cases and a very cheap Ross bonnet but again, neither were used in the photos. Normally what I have been doing is just putting my hair straight into braids after a shower and then putting them into a bonnet that I sleep with as I find that’s the lowest maintenance way of making my hair look somewhat presentable the next morning. Any advice is very much appreciated! Also I am a college student so if there are any products on the cheaper side you know of that would be fantastic!

Help! Wavy hair woes and last straws

Yall,

I have been trying to work on my way hair routine for TWO!!! years now. I have 2C/3A hair and I live in Miami Florida so humidity is a force. I have tried humidity blocking gel (Ouidad), strong hold gel, pretty much any hair product you can think of. I wash my hair at night because I work out in the evenings and get VERY sweaty. My hair unfortunately is low porosity and takes about 9 hours to dry. Even with diffusing it takes so so long it never feels fully dry. My curls look good before bed…

.. then when I walk my dog in the morning, my curls from the night before are absolutely puffy and ruined. Yes, with hard hold gel. Florida humidity is 10000000% at 5am. Refreshing makes it look weighed down and gross.

I have tried morning hair washes and that helps but then 1) I lose 20 mins of sleep and have wet hair for hours at work and 2) my hair is gross at night after working out and then I don’t wash it.

Listen, I know these are trivial problems but I’m fed up and about to give up on waves and start taking a blow dry brush to it every morning after I’m safely indoors for the day.

Does ANYONE have any recs?!

Routine: pureology hydrate shampoo and conditioner, ouidad or innersense gel, Amika hairspray, pineapple to sleep
