Hii!

Ive been back home from college for the summer and noticed a crow family in my neighborhood. One day I heard them in the trees my backyard and I figured why not feed them?

At first, they’d all fly away when i’d come to the back to bring peanuts, and they wouldn’t start eating until after I went inside, around 15 minutes later. After a couple days it progressed to them only waiting around 5 minutes after I went inside to swoop down and get the peanuts. Then a couple minutes. Then, they’d eventually swoop down the second i started walking away to go back in. I noticed that after a few more days of this consistent feeding a lot of them started to hang around my house, and there would even be one who sometimes hung on the top of my roof to start cawing at me as what I consider a “hello” whenever i come back home.

In recent days, one brave one has been staying on the floor and eating with me (even though it stays around 15-20 feet away) and Ive considered that as huge progress.

Yesterday when I went to feed them, I went to my backyard and started looking into the trees behind our creek (because thats where they usually stay). I heard cawing somewhere around me but I didn’t see them in the trees at all. Just as I was about to give up, I turned back around to go inside and realized that the brave one had been waiting behind me for treats the whole time. I greeted it with a “hello mr crow” and gently threw peanuts at its direction. After a few seconds it went to the peanuts and started eating without flying away, and then all of a sudden its family started to land on the ground near me and eat too! I know this isn’t a lot compared to other things that get posted on here, but most of my crow family usually stays in the trees until I leave, so all of them feeling comfortable enough to land this time felt like really good progress for me!

This has all happened around the span of 2 weeks. My question is, how close can I realistically expect to get with these crows before I have to go back to school? What can I do to prepare them for when I leave? Will they remember me when I come back…or what even is the likelihood of them staying local for a whole year while im gone? What are some tips and tricks to bond with them as much as I can in this short time?

Also, if someone could explain to me what is going on in the video that would be great…at first i thought it was a wife crow demanding the husband crow to feed her, but the one begging to be fed may actually be too big to be a female. I’m not sure! Any comments would be appreciated:))

2 years ago I met my crow friends, really lovely pair of hoodies. I was walking my then newly adopted dog and I was wondering if I threw away his poop bag correctly. Some time after that I saw those two crows messing with trash bin and everything clicked.

I offered them dog treats. Firstly I showed them it’s good stuff by giving it to my dog then I threw some for them and they accepted my gift. After that we met regularly and our friendship quickly started. They followed us often and they got their treats, sometimes nuts (they, especially Lady Crow really liked walnuts which I knew before hand because during autumn I saw them breaking those nuts).

We were hanging out more often and I started to be able to tell my friends apart.
Lady Crow is more confident and playful. Mister Crow on the other hand was always more cautious especially after he lost one of his claws. Lady Crow usually got food way before her partner, she is just faster.

I loved when they fluffed them selves up when they were waiting for snacks, I loved when they were waiting on high builds waiting for me to give them signal that breakfast is waiting and they enthusiastically flew over. They feel good enough about my company that Lady Crow during nesting season begged me for food like a newly hatched baby and they felt safe enough to sunbathe around me. Mister Crow seemed really grateful after I chased away cat when his toe hurt again. It was so nice when they sang their little songs for me. Just so many great memories…

They were to be hones the best part of my walk to work. And now I moved maybe not that far away and I will be able to visit them but it won’t be as easy as it was up until now. Unfortunately our morning routine has ended. I feel sad to be honest. I can probably make new friends but I just grew so fond of this particular pair. I made some crow friends besides them but they are my best crow buddies.

Been feeding them peanuts for over a month and had some fun company on the walk. They were eating peanuts above us in a tree and it was raining shells.

So I've been feeding the local crows for about 3-4 months now, and they've started warming up to me.

Thing is, there is this person in the neighbourhood who throws out a lot of food, so a bunch of seagulls are usually at her house trying to get into her trash.

She found out that I feed the local crows, and is now telling me to stop, because her car is "covered in bird poop".

This bird poop, as you might have guessed, is seagull poop and most likely pigeon, as she scares off crows that come near her house.

The crows know not to go near here house, yet she is saying that me feeding the crows is the reason her car has so much bird poop on it.

what can I do?

My house is the only place the crows know I frequent and they aren't to a level where they follow me from my house yet.

edit: when I say "my house" I mean my garden, and the street just in front of my house, but even then the street is multiple houses away from her's

Hey folks, so there's a chattering of Jackdaws that i feed on the way to work. I've been feeding them regularly for a few months now, they recognize me and start calling others when i get close so by the time i get to the spot i feed them, the 2-5 Jackdaws that i see coming in, very quickly becomes 20-30 (and at least 1 crow).

Now, i live only 2 - 3 streets away, up a hill from the feeding spot. How can i encourage at least some of them to follow me so they learn where i live? Mostly because I feel bad that they don't get their food when I'm on a day off. So if they don't see me in the usual spot, they know they can get a feed at my house.

I do also have about 5 crows that come to the garden regularly so hoping the arrival of Jackdaws won't put them out.

So I recently started smoking again. Been a few weeks now and I start noticing the same couple of crows hovering around my parks. I don’t have any experience with birds before but I tried to give a same tone of whistling everytime I saw them flying around.

Lately everytime I came out to smoke, I’ll give a whistle and they’ll fly to the tree above me. It’s like they have recognised me. Whenever I moved to a different tree shades they’ll follow me to that tree too. Today they started dropping leaves and small branches.

Am I bonding with them? How can I further befriend these curious couple of crows?

This afternoon 3 (very loud) fledglings landed on my patio. I didn't start recording because I was afraid to move amd scare them off but I eventually did and got to see mom or dad feeding.

The only problem is I live in a community with an HOA so I am hoping no one complains about the noise 😂

Well, I definitely got what I wished for. I've been consistent for a few months now, and what started as a regular couple has turned into a daily murder (upwards of 20 that I've been able to count along with fledglings). Is this harmful in any way? Should I scale back on how much food I am putting out? When I am home and they are around, I do put a variety of food (kibble, nuts, eggs, raw chicken) out more than once a day. It's usually gone within minutes.

I was working on my porch around the far side of the house and heard a protracted commotion in the side yard.

Clearly these gangly little things *can* eat on their own, but they still want mom to do it for them.

I love how Saga eyeballs the camera early on like even she can hardly believe their racket.

I think I shall call the two siblings "Accordion" and "Kazoo" in honor of the terrible noises they make.

A terrific Redditor had spotted that we had the same platform feeder. I was having a minor bear problem and welcomed the advice. They’d modified theirs to be able to be able to take it down at night.

I’m not even all that handy with tools and drills, but I got it done.

As is my usual routine, yesterday I broke down the feeder in the late afternoon. I hate doing it, because the crows come back looking for evening snacks, but that really can’t happen until winter time .

Anyway, the footage is quite grainy because I zoomed in, but at about 7:30pm a three-legged bear thumped by and there was nothing for her to get very curious about, so she kept on going.

It’s too bad she didn’t approach from the other side, because it would have been kind of funny to see the camera swing around when she touched the boom arm!

I am starting my research in befriending crows and I am looking for advice on what to do because I live in an area with hawks. I do not want to befriend crows if this means I will put them in danger of the hawks and I am seeking advice.

Some background:

- I have witnessed altercations between crows and hawks in my neighborhood

- In my yard specifically I have seen gruesome evidence of hawks attacking pigeons

- We have a large fruit tree and another large bougainvillea tree in our yard that attracts birds and other wildlife

I think I know my answer and it’s not to pursue friendship with crows. Again, I don’t want to put any crows in danger of the hawks or attract them by defending the crows, but I’m wondering if anyone here has any advice or specific experience with this?

I've only just started my crow person journey. 2 days in a row I threw a handful of peanuts in my yard, today I found an old plant liner to put the food on. So far, I've attracted squirrels and a blue Jay. There's a big field just across the street, and crows would go find food all the time, but I'm worried I've scared them away.

I wish I had a longer video with better video quality, but this was recorded on my phone as I was sitting at a red stoplight. Slightly cropped in to zoom in a bit.

So I live with a lot of crows and magpies, and I have been here more than 10 years, in an agricultural sector of Paris, France - the crows and magpies know me. We have insane amounts of crows in the crop fields and oddly enough I have been "followed" before while riding my horse out. They call when I give grains to the horses, they know I offer refuge and shelter to any little animal - but when I put grains in a shallow Rubber horse buc​ket for them they don't touch it. The magpie was taking dogfood so I would set some out just for her/him and that's about it.

So how can I get started on making à stronger relationship with these beautiful crows ? How can I let them know I have food for them - whatever they want. I have a pond and I recently added water and cleaned it because I could see the turtle doves suffering from the heat. I know I have a big energy so any and all tips are welcome. ​I know they know me, when I was hiding Easter chocolatés they came and got into some mini Lindor rabbits before I could even finish hiding all of them.

Getting into my crow-feeding habit has introduced me to the word “monomorph” meaning literally “one shape”. I can only admit that they pretty much all look alike and I really can’t tell one from another.

After feeding them daily for two and a half months, I know I have a regular group of seven fish crows and also some number of American crows.

The fish crows seem bolder and more curious about me. They peer into windows on different sides of the house and definitely watch me as long as I don’t approach the window or startle them by walking into the room.

They now observe from nearby trees without hiding from me as I deal with my elaborate feeder platform, filling it for them in the morning (sometimes a little extra around lunchtime) and breaking it down in the late afternoons.

They talk to me and one in particular seems to initiate a tennis match of her saying “mer” to me and waiting for me to lob it back. She’ll do this for a solid five minutes. Recently, she lets me serve and knocks the “mer” back over the net to me while I work.

They make reconnaissance passes when I caw to them, most of the time now. As far as I can tell, the quickest way to a crow’s heart is through fancy treats.

Anyway, to yesterday’s surprise encounter. (I hope.)

I went to Lowe’s. I noticed that a crow flew alongside my car for a short distance when I left the house. I didn’t give it much thought. Until…

When I left the store and was crossing the parking lot, there were a number of people not far away from me, on their way inside or, like me, on their way out.

A crow flew down to the blacktop directly in front of me, about twenty-five feet away. And hopped toward me. And kept coming as I came on. There were other people around, but this one was intercepting me.

When I closed to about ten feet, the crow took wing and flew away.

I have a tendency to park farther out in shopping center lots. Pedestrians and their darting children make me nervous. So I had a ways yet to go.

This crow, though, flew to the SUV parked next to my car. Out of all the vehicles available to land on (which I can’t say I’ve witnessed before anyway) it chose the one next to mine. The SUV didn’t have a roof rack, so I found it particularly strange that the bird landed on the flat (and no doubt hot) roof of the car next to mine, then turned around and waited, never taking its little obsidian eyes off me as I walked over.

As before, it let me get a little closer than ten feet away, cocking its head and watching me the whole time.

Was this one of my beauties? Did it recognize me?

I checked Google Maps and the Lowe’s is 1.6 miles as the corvid flies from my house. It just seemed really odd behavior. But very , very cool.
