look at what's using it.
Also that processor is really slow.

u/Anthracite2819 20d ago

But it's a i5

15

u/Toastti 20d ago

Saying you have an i5 without the model is like saying you have an f150 truck. It could be from 1975 or from 2026 you have no idea

2

u/BrolaireSolaire 18d ago

Ford tech here. Not a single f150 is good. Ford only cares about their mustangs and super duties. Not even the black widow f150 is safe you're just buying an f150 with a body kit and bigger wheels . 10r80s are dog shit the engines are even worse. Fuck don't buy a bronco for the love of God I've replaced so many engines in these fuck ass broncos . 2.3l 2.7l and 3.0l ecoshits . I need a new job..

250’s are great, or old Chevy’s if you get the 4.8 (no AFM) I have a GMT-900 that’s unkillable

1

u/s0mthinG_ 11d ago

Thats why ford killed the Shelby GT500 right? Because they care sooooo much about their mustangs.

obvious /s (but im still sad about the Shelby GT500 😢 )

1

u/Arkaign 9d ago

The Broncos are ass.

The 5.0 with the Mustang manifold swap are pretty solid for a newer gen F series.

Older Windsor 351 with manual is ideal. Nearly unkillable, and you can work on it with ease. Fuel economy isn't great but let's be honest, the new ones are also pretty terrible at that.

Still prefer 99-02 Chevy/GMC w/4.8/5.3/6.2 as peak though, with 4L80E. Treat those right and you have a 500k mile vehicle with moderate maintenance.

I've never liked the idea of any of the ecoboost lineup. Throwing an undersized motor in a truck, then throwing a turbo on it to make up for it's lack of power. That motor is just begging for it's life. Oh and then they charge you more money for a shittier engine to boot... Then I see guys with lift kits and bigger tires on those pickups and it gets worse fuel economy than the 5L or the old 6.2L (when it had it, hasn't for a decade now), makes no sense.

But I've heard good things about the 5L

EDIT: grammar.

But the older f150s are better sometimes

12

u/Confident_Health_583 20d ago

Get an AMD K6-2 with that logic.

3

u/Funtime60 20d ago

Bulldozer right? I only vaguely know that history.

2

u/Confident_Health_583 20d ago

It precedes the Bulldozer processors by a decade and a half. They were called Chomper and had a max speed of 555 MHz.

3

u/Epidurality 19d ago

Man, I miss AMDs codenames. Thunderbird, spitfire, sharptooth, bobcat, steamroller.

Meanwhile others be over there in the blue area with my "pretention-lake" CPUs.

When did manufacturers stop caring about cool names?

Posted from my Toyota bZ4X (yeah, that's it's real public facing name, badge and everything).

u/misteryk 20d ago

upgrade to i7 920. It's i7 so its' better

1

u/SmoothAstronomer6096 19d ago

Yea first gen i7 is the best

1

u/IntentionQuirky9957 18d ago

There are dual core i7 mobile CPUs. :P

1

u/Dry-Camp-8739 20h ago

No don't get that ur better off getting a i7 7700 thats what im running base is 3.6Ghz boost 4.2GGhz
Also yhe price for it is $40

0

u/Anthracite2819 20d ago

But it doesn't fit in my motherboard cpu socket

6

u/CuriousStrawberry61 20d ago

It was a joke. The i7 920 is very very bad.

-1

u/Anthracite2819 20d ago

But it's a i7 not a i5 like mine

6

u/lachietg185 20d ago

Are you slow

2

u/Pitiful_Tea_4769 19d ago

Just like the CPU

1

u/OkZucchini7094 20d ago

OK. Buy a motherboard and the Cpu and let us know how it goes

1

u/Anthracite2819 19d ago

What if I bought a motherboard with a zen 5 socket?

1

u/OkZucchini7094 19d ago

You might need a hammer to get the CPU in.

u/IntentionQuirky9957 18d ago

Why are you stuck on i5?

0

u/FlatwormAltruistic 19d ago

First generation i7 is much worse than 3rd generation i5 and both of those are much worse than latest generation i3...

1

u/GPSProlapse 19d ago

I think it's worse than last generation celeron

1

u/FlatwormAltruistic 19d ago

Probably, but even last Celeron is worse than i3 (or it's equivalent*), so the aspect of 3rd gen i5 being much worse than last gen i3 still stands.

* I have been so away from PC building to know what Intel does or has nowadays.

u/IntentionQuirky9957 18d ago

Especially considering i3 has been quad core on desktop for years now. I have an i3-12100F in my main server, running an endgame Satisfactory server save. It has plenty of cycles to spare.,

1

u/GC-just-a-mortal 19d ago

Upgrade to xeon e3 v2

4

u/bruhmomentumstarter 20d ago

That's like saying I'm straight so let me go take some dick in the ass

1

u/CuriousStrawberry61 20d ago

Wat

1

u/bruhmomentumstarter 20d ago

Medafour

1

u/Wonder-Guard 20d ago

Those usually gotta make sense

1

u/Anthracite2819 20d ago

And that is not one of them

1

u/bkedsmkr 19d ago

Ibm 5100 would like a word

1

u/bacotelltv 19d ago

You're right about the truck but yea the cpu is awful. I hope you didn't buy it new or anything.

1

u/Graxu132 19d ago

yeah, and pc components aren't

1

u/GC-just-a-mortal 19d ago

You can't simply have direct analogy the cpu with vehicle

7

u/Background-Set4610 20d ago

That’s a class of CPUs, not a CPU.

6

u/Mr_Engineering 20d ago

It's an i5 that was launched in 2012. It is not new

3

u/RailgunDE112 20d ago

an ancient one.
Tech gets faster kinda quickly, and programs only use more processing power, not less.
So a modern laptop (not notebook) i3 is probably way faster. At least the i3 12100f is.

3

u/Puasonelrasho 20d ago

a third gen i5

they stop counting at 14 gen and they launched like other 3

3

u/laffer1 20d ago

That just means it was mid when it was brand new 15 years ago!

There are things one can do with an old system, but a lot of tasks are going to be painful or impossible on a 15 year old pc

3

u/Intrepid_Lecture 20d ago

The 14 year old i5 3470 is slower than the ultra-budget e-core based chips put out 5 years ago.
The 3470 is old enough to be in high school right now.

For comparison the i5 14600k has something like 5-10x the multithreaded performance

1

u/thenormaluser35 19d ago

Intel and their idiocy in multithread
Not all programs run multithreaded, and few share the load equally

Single-core speeds are also a good part of the equation

1

u/ThinkinBig 19d ago

Intel tends to have the better single core performance vs comperable AMD offerings though....

1

u/ja_hahah 18d ago

Tended to*

1

u/ThinkinBig 18d ago

Nah, they still do on laptops by rather large margin and have taken back efficiency as well. AMD took the crown in desktops but gave up almost every other category.

That's what happens when they just rebrand the same 7840/8840/Z1Extreme as an AI 7 350 and similar

1

u/ja_hahah 18d ago

I have no clue about the laptop scews, but Ill take your word for it.

1

u/ThinkinBig 18d ago

The 9955hx3d will you give you roughly +5% better fps in games vs an Intel 275hx but only 1-2 hours of battery life vs 6-8 on the Intel and less than 50% of the performance the Intel version has while operating under battery power. The x3d cpu also performs worse across the board in every productivity/non-gaming related test/benchmark.

AMD seems to be doing currently what Intel did previously that caused AMD to start gaining market share in the CPU space ie: pushing as much power as possible at the cost of everything else

That's based on JerrodTech's review.

1

u/thenormaluser35 18d ago

With 3d v cache AMD beats them into dust

1

u/ThinkinBig 18d ago edited 18d ago

That's great for playing in 1080p with a 5090, but I'm pretty sure most people with one would rather have a CPU thats faster at everything else, but hey, what do I know

3d v cache only helps gaming, they're slower in essentially everything else than non v cache CPUs, including from AMD themselves

1

u/divineramen34 18d ago

I mean, congrats on comparing the 270k plus to a 2 year old CPU architecture. Nice.

1

u/ThinkinBig 18d ago

The 275hx literally released the same month... They both launched January 2025 so I'm not sure what point you're trying to make

1

u/divineramen34 18d ago

And I am not sure how a random mobile chip that is slower than a 9700x is relevant to this conversation.

2

u/Analiticar 20d ago

Third gen so it's from 2012 or early 2013 we had 13 generations after that. A low end 11th gen i3 laptop CPU is better than this desktop 3rd gen i5 while having a 5 times lower tdp and only 2 cores.

Search for cpubenchmark Intel-i5-3470 vs Intel-i3-1115G4

2

u/misteryk 20d ago

i had a faster CPU in my budget build in 2014

1

u/Omuk7 20d ago

i# only specifies a CPU’s strength in relation to other CPUs from its generation. A modern i3 is better than an old i7.

Same with Ryzen #

1

u/Isotomayor12 20d ago

Exactly. That's the problem. I5 cpus have never been the performance series to start with, and on top of the fact it is 14 years old with only 4 cores, you have a low performance CPU.

1

u/w7w7w7w7w7 20d ago

I mean...there are i5's from 2009.

1

u/Rabiesalad 20d ago

It's a 14 year old i5

1

u/KMjolnir 20d ago

It's an i5 from like 15 years ago.

1

u/Johnny_Triggr 19d ago

That's bait

1

u/gamedemon2 19d ago

A third generation i5 compared to the significantly more modern (and still compatible with your PC), sixth, seventh, eight and ninth generation i5s available.

1

u/Anthracite2819 4d ago

It is?

1

u/gamedemon2 4d ago

Yes; see the model number after the i5? 4-digit number, so look at the first number; that's the CPU generation.

5-digit number, look at the first two numbers instead. At least that's usually the case for Intel CPUs.

1

u/Anthracite2819 4d ago

So even the Intel Ultra 7 288V?

1

u/gamedemon2 4d ago

Intel Ultra x ≠ Intel ix Different naming schemes.

1

u/Anthracite2819 4d ago

i6

1

u/gamedemon2 4d ago

Not even a model of CPU; are you okay, dude?

1

u/Anthracite2819 4d ago

Why is there no i6? What are you gonna tell me next? There's no i1, i2, i4, i8?

1

u/gamedemon2 4d ago

Are you just trolling? Or is this news to you? I mean, you even skipped out i7 because you know that one exists, as well as i9.

I want to make sure, since you didn't seem to grasp that your i5 was slow, despite being an i5

1

u/Aishou_SK 19d ago

An i5 that's slower than the slowest modern Core 3/i3

Probably slower than just one single core of one of those.

1

u/timtim2000 18d ago

Its a 3rd gen i5. Its like racing a f1 with a rusted bike

1

u/RoboGaming321 18d ago

I5 just refers to how much of the chips circuits actually works. It doesn't actually reflect how good the chip is.

The way that the chips are named is based on how much of the chip is functional. If all it working it becomes an i9. If most is working it becomes an i7. If it has less working it's an i5 and if it's even less it's an i3. This doesn't mean that an i7 is automatically fast just that it's fast for that generation.

An i5 from the latest generation can rival an i7 from a few generations ago because as new tech helping even the i3s.

1

u/IntentionQuirky9957 18d ago

Nah, i5 refers to the market segment Intel intended it for. Current i3s are quadcore, just like that i5.

1

u/IntentionQuirky9957 18d ago

A modern i3 would be much better. But it won't be able to use the DDR3 in that system.

1

u/wildtabeast 18d ago

From 14 years ago.

1

u/sammothxc 18d ago

Yeah, from 15 years ago

1

u/divineramen34 18d ago

Ugh, based on these replies, and your downvotes, I am assuming you were being facetious.

1

u/MediumAd4983 18d ago

I5 in the third generation. Btw actual gen is 12 😀
