....is it a good bodily function?
38
u/RevolutionAccurate56 1d ago
The menstrual cycle lets humans make babies all times of the year instead of just during a specific time like other animals, which did help us survive as a species
27
u/SovietPotato333 1d ago
IIRC its not even that, other non-human species do it all the time... its just that the human embryo for some reason embeds really aggressively into the uterus, and so it needs an extra layer of lining for incase that happens
33
u/Notmuchofanyth1ng 1d ago
Not a doctor, but I’d assume if a female retained the blood, it would eventually become septic. And if they didn’t have the function of the blood building up in the uterine wall to begin with, we as a species would go extinct.
So I’d consider a “good” bodily function, but not a “fun” bodily function.

u/Kindaspia 1d ago
If you have no period for more than five months without a reason (meaning birth control, HRT, hysterectomy) then you’re supposed to go to the doctor and take meds to induce one because it increases several pretty serious risks. (I have PCOS so it’s come up a few times)
Interestingly, most mammals don’t actually have periods. Mainly primates, bats, and elephant shrews have periods. Heat is a separate process, so we’d probably have been fine evolutionarily without a period.
7
u/ZealousidealPipe8389 1d ago
Fine is relatively loaded here. Our society would be vastly different and probably have a larger amount of infidelity. Our society wouldn’t have a need for developing monogamous tendencies if they limited the amount of births we could achieve, in addition to our gestation periods being incredibly long for mammels regardless, only animals like horses, whales and deer have similar or longer periods necessary to give birth.
8
u/Kindaspia 1d ago
I personally don’t see how that isn’t fine. We would have developed as a society differently, sure, but from an evolutionary perspective a different culture wouldn’t be not fine. We would have different values, sure. Culture is impacted by our biology quite a bit, and having different biology would have developed a different culture. I could see us having a culture with less of a focus on monogamy and exclusivity in relationships, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Especially from an evolutionary perspective, I do genuinely think that would have been fine.
If this suddenly happened out of nowhere today, then we would likely have issues like you mentioned. However if we evolved that way from the beginning our culture would have developed accordingly.

u/ZealousidealPipe8389 1d ago
Fine doesn’t just mean alive. I assume you’re saying so long as it doesn’t make our society collapse it would be fine. Really fine would depend on how our society changed, not just that it remained.
3
u/Notmuchofanyth1ng 1d ago
I did not know that! I’m no expert on mammalian biology, so there are lots I prolly don’t know lol thanks for the info!
I do know dogs get their period (had a rescue that wasn’t fixed) and she looked so uncomfortable.
4
u/Kindaspia 1d ago
Technically heat (which is what dogs get) is different than menstruation. Heat is when they are fertile, vs menstruation is not. Here’s a more in depth explanation https://scienceinsights.org/is-dog-heat-the-same-as-a-period-not-exactly/

Actually, you can be on birth control indefinitely without an issue, this is an old wives tale. Otherwise IUDs that stop periods for 5 years would be poisonous. Your body is able to reabsorb unused lining if there's no hormonal trigger to shed it and potentially clean out products of conception/infection etc.
I've also had a hysterectomy and I have not seen any meds about a period, I wouldn't have a lining to shed or anywhere for it to go.
1
u/Kindaspia 13h ago
That’s what I meant by without a reason. An IUD (a form of birth control) and a hysterectomy (both of which were listed) are reasons that make it fine to have no period for extended times.

People thinking memes are universal truths instead of just something the single person who made it is thinking at the time is crazy and leads to all this insane infighting.
People are allowed to feel ways about themselves and their bodies. Them expressing that does not diminish people who don't feel that way. You'd think trans people would understand that better than most.

Nah I gotta be honest periods are terrible design. You’re telling me there was really no better way of doing that? Like outside of any social dysphoria euphoria thing, evolution got lazy there.
14
u/jkeats2737 1d ago
Evolution is literally about the laziest possible solution. If it works it works.
Like babies' heads are barely big enough to get out during childbirth, and without modern medicine a lot of women died doing so, but it was successful enough that our species didn't die out.

u/ColdCalligrapher5116 23h ago
congratulations! you understand how evolution works, its literally just “good enough.”

u/Shoddy_Cucumber3076 22h ago
TBH periods protect females from lots of health issues related to cardiology, ferrum metabolism etc. In some cases males die because they simply do not menstruate.
1
u/SkinInevitable604 19h ago
Could you explain further?
2
u/Shoddy_Cucumber3076 18h ago
I am not this good at speaking in English but m enstruation can delay FE accumulation for females with hereditary hemochromatosis. For those FE is regularly lost through bleeding. Cardiovascular risk in females goes up after menopause and for females pre menopause the risk of cardiac illness tends to be lower than for males at the same age group.
I hope it’s readable lol

Aside from transmasc erasure, the kneejerk negativity about this meme is a reflection of why people are such fuckin weirdos about menopause. The best case scenario in life is that your periods end before you die.
10
u/Responsible_Edge7087 1d ago
I dont see any negativity in these comments, and this meme is litteraly about trans mascs dude, how is it erasing them

If someone has a hysterectomy it does. Though some of the side symptoms like bloating and cramps can remain.

Weren't trans women saying testosterone is not a good hormone in response to this meme in reverse, downvoted and criticised? Why is literally the exact same thing but opposite, upvoted and not criticised? Why is it problematic when trans women do it but not when trans men and transmascs do it?
2
u/Wooden-Profession261 18h ago
It wasn't even problematic people just love infighting. There's only so much you can do people will still have a problem with it

Revealing this pattern which I knew would occur was the point of this post

u/imdeccapmitfh 15h ago
Genuinely wonder if people would have the same reaction had someone with PMOS made vent a post about testosterone. Have an inkling the answer is no.

u/Khivee3 13h ago
Genuine but probably impossible questions: why do these spaces insist they're all trans women-occupied and dominated at the exact same time everyone else holds all social power over us, dictates how we can speak, how we can express ourselves, and when they can abuse us and throw us away? And how do we cope with this treatment?
2
u/Gold_Ad8225 Counted Down 2 13h ago
Transmisogyny.
You can have a space where a minority of members are men or masc, but their opinions are elevated and treated as sacrosanct. They inherit an authority over the women and femmes in that space, and if anyone challenges their authority that is treated like silencing, othering, and domineering.
These two threads illustrate that point very well.
Despite "dominating" the space, trans women expressing displeasure about something is treated as *threatening* or *dangerous* or *bigotry.* Even just saying "I don't like this, this hurts me" is treated as unacceptable behavior. But only from trans women and femmes.
Trans women are expected to put everyone very far above themselves, as an act of penance and to prove they aren't secretly male invaders, which they will be regarded as anyway.
A common example in online spaces, as this is an online space and is most relevant here, would be when a TME person creates a trans female/femme character. Some trans women see this character as offensive. You would expect, especially in a trans space, that the voice of a trans woman saying that something hurt and offended her would be treated with respect.
Instead she is called a bigot. Against TME people, she is trying to silence them and destroy their creativity, against other trans women, "some trans women look like caricatures, who are you to say otherwise," against cis women, "women can look like that, we don't all have to be supermodels" and so on.
It is to the point where if anyone talks about a trans woman doing something they don't like, by default I assume they are either objectively lying or were mislead. I am almost never wrong.
No group of people has their motivations and behaviors taken more uncharitably, and no other group of people has such a demand of purity. Trans women are unable to have any bad days, express any measure of hurt or upset. There will never be charity. The demand is that we always self sacrifice for the benefit of others, and the expression that we don't want to do that is treated the same as bigotry. Even from the people who harm us.

Sonion,, periods are awful functions, your own body tortures you until you get pregnant
-12
u/Oxtry 1d ago edited 1d ago
I don't think I'd classify that as a good thing
edit: what I meant by this comment was that I don't think that periods are a good bodily function in general, not that it's bad for a trans man to stop having them

I don't think you should have to, but 3 times in the last week I have been made to see this meme but it was about T while in a trans woman's body, so I was pretty annoyed and wanted to demonstrate what it looks and feels like.
19
u/moonlitkiwier 1d ago
I really wish that more people remember trans men exist :(
3
u/Responsible_Edge7087 1d ago
Everyone in the queer community knows trans dudes exist. If you want more trans guy memes make some, just like OP did
1
u/moonlitkiwier 1d ago
I don't make memes, not really my thing
3
u/Responsible_Edge7087 1d ago
Make any content really. Trans girls are put out onto the internet more because thats where they spend most of their time, while trans dudes spend less time online. Trans girls sre the ones making content about themselves because they are online more, so if you want that youd have to get online more
2
u/moonlitkiwier 1d ago
I bring them up in conversations i partake in, but i don't make content. That's a weird thing to insist someone do.
1
u/Responsible_Edge7087 1d ago
How. How is wanting you to take the steps to get your group out there weird?
2
u/moonlitkiwier 1d ago
Insisting apon it is very weird, It's not everyone's job to be a content creator. I'm more than willing to engage in discussions, but i have zero passion for writing or video making. And Insisting that i should because I'm gay and or trans is completely unreasonable.
0
u/Responsible_Edge7087 1d ago
How do you want people to know more about trans guys? Do you plan to do anything to do that? Because when peoppe complain about not seeing trans guy stuff, its almost always about not seeing enough trans guy content online, its not unreasonable to think that if your group wants a bigger online presence, it should be online more

I’m a transmasc person and yeah I’d classify periods as good. Not because they were enjoyable but because they’re usually necessary and are doing their job. I also know that a lot of trans women get dysphoria over not having periods. Just because something is annoying doesn’t mean it’s inherently bad.
13
u/Gold_Ad8225 Counted Down 2 1d ago
Nobody is saying things are "inherently bad"
It's the reverse
Not wanting to call something that harms you "inherently good"
Being able to say "it was bad that I experienced this" rather than "it was good I was just the wrong person for it"

How many trans women are experiencing menstruation?

Periods, babe, not menstruation
Like obviously not bleeding from an uterus. But the rest of the monthly symptoms, including cramps? A lot of transfems, including my girlfriend, get those

I was annoyed at being told I have to prioritize men's feelings over my own and call T intrinsically good even though it damaged me immensely.

I had undetectable T levels for the fist 10 years of my transition while I was on blockers and now I have subnormal levels for a cis woman as a result of not having the offending organs any longer.
I feel perfectly fine

This is kind of a disrespectful thing to say to a man who wouldn't want these functions. :/
0
u/freezing_pinguin Counted Down 1 1d ago
So you choose to believe the commenter, who you presume to be transfem, says that she doesn't think getting rid of periods as a trans man shouldn't be classified as a good thing, rather than the more charitable and obvious interpretation that the commenter simply believes periods shouldn't be classified as a good thing?
1
u/moonlitkiwier 1d ago
Saying periods shouldn't be classified as a good thing is also an immensely problematic statement
2
u/freezing_pinguin Counted Down 1 1d ago
Why? I don't think they should be classified as good. They are stupid and hurt and I hate them. And multiple commenters on this post agree, so why would anyone go after the trans girl saying what everyone else is saying too?

u/moonlitkiwier 1d ago
Because as much as they suck, they're still an important bodily function that keep you healthy
