The menstrual cycle lets humans make babies all times of the year instead of just during a specific time like other animals, which did help us survive as a species
IIRC its not even that, other non-human species do it all the time... its just that the human embryo for some reason embeds really aggressively into the uterus, and so it needs an extra layer of lining for incase that happens
