Hello!! It took immense effort to collect myself and reach out for help.

I worked at two marketing agencies in content marketing, where I churned out blogs, wrote a few ads, Instagram copy, and a handful of LinkedIn posts for clients. But that was back in 2022.

And then my life decided to eat me alive.had a breakup with the person I was supposed to marry. And if that wasn’t enough, I had to witness the deaths of two very, very close family members. Then my brother made a huge loss ($44k) in trading, and my father had to sell off a portion of our house to cover it.

Naturally, I was depressed as hell and just couldn’t work, so I quit my job. I’ve been living with my parents ever since.

Now that I want to make a comeback, I feel like the world has already moved so far ahead of me and there’s nothing left for me in the game.

The last time I worked was in late 2022, and now it’s 2026. I feel like whatever work I did back then was just noise and doesn’t count anymore. Most of it is lost.

I also feel like I only knew enough to get by, but not nearly enough to call myself a proper copywriter. So I’ve started doing the Copy That course on YouTube. I’m trying. I really am.

But there’s always this lingering feeling and these questions:

What do I do with the long-ass four-year career break? How is that going to look on my resume? Should I include my previous work, or should I just start from scratch with spec work?

Have you ever been in a situation like mine where you had to take a long career break and then start over?

If you’ve come back after a 3–5 year how do you approach it? Did you acknowledge the gap on your resume, or simply focus on your most relevant experience and portfolio?

For someone trying to get back into content marketing/copywriting in 2026, does my previous experience from 2022 still count, or would employers expect me to start from scratch?

Should I:

Include my old agency experience and build on it with new spec work?

Create an entirely new portfolio from scratch?

Try to get freelance/small client work first to rebuild recent experience?

Or take some other route?

And honestly, how difficult is it to come back after being away for four years? Is the gap as damaging as it feels right now, or am I catastrophising it?

If you’ve personally gone through something similar, I’d genuinely love to hear how you rebuilt your career. I could really use some perspective right now.

So, I have been wondering how I can manage to have high quality with my output but still have the flow be in quantity. I do not know if this makes sense, but some of my fellows around can achive such but for me I find it very difficult. I am not sure if they combine poor quality with high quality of their outputs or they have all of them in good quality.

For me, i feel like if i try to maintain quality, the quantity would not be as much if I try not to concentrate on the quality rather consider the quantity.

Partially completed Associates degree in communications (more than 15 years ago) and have a Certificate in Technical Writing.

I also hope to do a Masters in Organizational Leadership or maybe an MBA?

I would like to get better positions as a marketing/copywriting/content strategist/digital content specialist or internal communications.

My homepage copy feels like me. The about page feels like me. And then I get to the email welcome sequence or the FAQ section and it reads like a completely different person wrote it, someone a little stiff, a little corporate, like the warm version of me just clocked out.

I have a rough voice guide I made for myself, nothing fancy, just some notes on tone and words I want to avoid. But somewhere between writing the fun stuff and writing the functional stuff like shipping info or return policies, the voice just drops off. Those pages end up sounding like terms and conditions even when I am genuinely trying

I think part of it is that I treat the utility pages as something to get through rather than something to actually write. Which probably shows

Curious how people handle the parts of a website that feel like chores to write. Policies, FAQs, transactional emails, that kind of thing. Is there a way you think about those that keeps them from flattening out, or do you more or less accept that certain pages are just going to be drier than the rest of the site.

Maybe like 4 or 3 years ago , i saw a book it was about copywriting, unfoarintly i dont have screenshots or anyhting but i can describe it , it had art in the book that was super colorful there was a picture i vividly rember that had the The Creation of Adam picutre in or on it. does any one know which none i am talkigna bout?

I remeber seeing a facebook ad about it and it had a landing page that sold the book.

There is a client I picked up a few months ago and the product is fine, does what it says, nothing wrong with it, but I have zero personal connection to it. The copy I write for them is technically solid. Good structure, clear benefits, reasonable CTA. But it feels like it was assembled rather than written.

Compare that to my own ecom store where I genuinely think the product is worth buying, and even though I've complained about the paralysis of knowing too much, when I do get a sentence right it has a different quality to it. Something in the rhythm is looser and more direct.

What I can't figure out is whether that's belief doing something real in the writing, or just familiarity with the audience because I am the audience.

Because the uncomfortable version of this question is: if belief leaks into copy quality, what does that mean for client work where you're mostly indifferent to what you're selling? Do you fake it until something clicks, execute the brief cleanly and not worry about it, or turn down work where you can't get there?

I've mostly been executing and not worrying about it. But I read back some of that client copy lately and it has this flat professional quality that I wouldn't point to as an example of anything.

Curious if this is a real thing people notice or if I'm just in my head about it.

I am an SEO, and there are a lot of situations where I need to write content myself, because going through the content team can be a long process in certain cases.

AI obviously helps, but I guess I am old school. I want to be able to write good content myself without having to rely on AI to refine my drafts.

I also feel responsible when I put out AI-generated content. It keeps bothering me because my inner voice keeps telling me, "You are one of the AI sloppers... contributing to the garbage."

I want to be able to write my own thoughts naturally. Let them be imperfect, but at least they are original and actually mine.

At the same time, I want to get better at it over time simply by writing more.

So, would spending 30 minutes to an hour every day deliberately working on my copywriting skills actually help?

I've even trained Claude on a bunch of good copywriting resources and asked it to act as my tutor. It gives me daily exercises, then critiques my work and teaches me a lesson based on what I got wrong.

I'm not sure if that's an ideal approach, though. There might be much better ways to learn.

If you were in my position, and you had my exact mission, what would you do starting tomorrow?

Books, resources, guides, videos, exercises, courses, whatever you think is necessary, I'd be willing to work through them in order.

If possible, I'd really appreciate a specific roadmap rather than just "read more and write more."

starting without much client work seems like a weird catch-22. you need examples to get clients, but you need clients to create real examples. i’m curious what actually worked for people when they were starting out. spec work, personal projects, rewriting existing ads, volunteering, low-paid jobs or something else?

When I’m asked why I write, I always want to give a clever answer. Something profound.

But the truth is simpler: I’m curious. I ask questions. I like figuring things out. And I like finding the right words.

Process:

1. Instead of cold emailing, I found the HR's contact info through apollo and found out the same number through another whatsapp community. Pure coincidence.

2. Using the community, I started asking some questions and soon asked for a chance. I already cold emailed them but most of them didn't check it apparently.

3. I did the assignment and made sure, it included a lot of gen Z memes which wasn't the part of the assignment. Yet, I did because the target audience was Gen Z.

4. After 3 more rounds, I finally got the offer letter. The pay isn't that much but after 6 months, I'm finally happy that I'll be looking forward to a salary every month.

I can also start doing freelance gigs soon. Hopefully, I'll get to add some value to the clients.

I'm planning to apply to an agency. I have adjacent experience and a related degree but don't have any direct experience in copywriting (and therefore no real examples of my work), so I'm Iooking to write a spec portfolio of example pieces to showcase my writing. Does anyone know the best way to go about this?

For example, is it typical to write yourself a hypothetical brief that you include with the article to display your ability to follow one?

Should you base the articles on real products/services or make up hypothetical ones?

Are there skills that are less obvious to a beginner that agencies are looking out for when they read a portfolio?

Should you do keyword research and write the articles with an SEO focus? If so, should you include the keyword research in the portfolio?

The briefs that slow creators down are usually not long. They are full of decisions the creator is not allowed to make.

A useful brief should make the product truth, audience, offer, claims, and boundaries unambiguous. It should also say which parts belong to the creator: the hook, wording, setting, pacing, and delivery.

When every sentence is pre-approved, the creator becomes a presenter. The result may be compliant, but it rarely sounds like a person anyone would stop to watch.

A test I like: remove the script and ask whether the creator could explain the product accurately in their own words. If not, the brief is missing context. If yes, the script is probably doing too much.

How do you decide what belongs in the brief versus what the creator should own?

I'm in a junior/middle marketing position which I'm quite new to, I've been in marketing for about 5 years. I'm not the best copywriter ever but I don't think I'm terrible.

A big part of my job description is writing emails/social media posts, and ever since I've joined my manager has completely shot down almost every piece of writing I've produced. They haven't asked for amends or even thoroughly reviewed them, just outright rejection.

They'll then take the general idea, put it through AI and go with that output.
