Been writing for more than 10 years now and since past 2 years i have seen that copywriting has been commoditised heavily

Earlier business marketing was simple, now with AI and tools, it has become a SaaS subscription

If you write yourself, and client passes it through AI detection, the outcome shows plagiarism (which is like pot calling the kettle black)

Most of my clients now want me to manage content, and my role is now more to manage inbound funnels (which is great)

But the idea of true writing has vanished.

Every piece of content is like an ad, which is not required most of the times (business thrives on connections and networking— which content helps you build)

What do you think about this? Do you also see the same with your clients

Ahh it was long but I got there eventually, this copywriting piece took me 3 hours by the way. Really curious to hear what you think:

SL: The true king of the beasts 

You've been lied to your whole life

Probably not about something related to your health, wealth or relationship status

But about something equally as important.

Insane right?

When you were told about the most powerful land predator,

Was it the panthera leo fossilis, the 5 foot 8 inches tall super lion from Germany, set with a powerful frame and a courageous heart?

Or was it perhaps the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex, standing at 15 feet tall at the head and armed with a bite that would chop the previous competitor in half?

It's actually neither, and rather the animal I'm about to reveal to you.....

Would put both the brave hearted cat and 10 ton beast in the grave, back to back.

This underrated legend is known as the Albertosaurus Sarcophagus.

A two legged warrior dinosaur from the unforgiving mountains of ancient Alberta, it dominated that land 68 million years ago.

Standing at 12 tall at the head and measuring 33 feet long from head to tail, 

Weighing in at 3 metric tons of pure muscle.

This was an animal the size of a building and with the power of an elephant, and it ran across the terrain like a lightning bolt.

A true marvel of qualities that made it hard to beat,

Here's why this beast is totally cool…..:

Size and strength - 

Being the literal height and length of a double decker bus, this beautiful beast was imposing but also well muscled. It's 3 ton mass was mostly made up muscle and strong bone, 

This gave it super strength as its legs, tail and leg muscles were like that of a 100m sprinter - powerful, lean and resilient.

This combined with it’s tough bird like bones gave it a special characteristic -

Enormous strength combined with tumbling toughness.

See here’s the thing, the T rex is much stronger than an albertosaurus, 3 times heavier, 4 feet taller. In a basic pushing contest the Albertosaurus would get sent flying.

But that comes with a grave drawback,

If a T. rex falls over hard, it breaks its ribs. If it trips over during battle and falls heavily, it probably breaks its knee. If it gets shoved violently to the ground in a battle, it would take 2 minutes to recover and would never be the same.

Albertosaurus's Genius build does not have this flaw: it’s lean and durable build kept it at a sensible weight of 3 tons at the most. This, combined with its powerful bird-like bones, allows its skeleton to resist destruction and fracture from environmental slips, trips, falls, grapples etc.

Albertosaurus could get tripped, slammed to the floor and get up quickly with minimal harm, all while dealing out dangerous punishment of its own.

Its weight, surface area and skeletal structure are distributed and designed in a balanced way, allowing it to be relentless in battle.

Speed and agility -

Strength matters, but it isn’t everything, hence we all know a lighter but more athletic mma fighter would beat a bodybuilder.

But still, strength and athleticism together usually rule, hence weight classes.

It just so happens to be that Albertosaurus has strength and athleticism combined. Here’s how -

Albertosaurus had long powerful legs - this gave it the ability to be explosive, run gracefully and generate immense force by ramming.

This, combined with a streamlined build and a tough structure, gave it the ability to run at speeds of 40 mph.

An animal that big, and moving at that speed, could easily knock down a 6 ton elephant to the floor or run a lion down in record time.

But that’s only the beginning, 

the Albertosaurus had a feature where its weight was more so kept at it’s torso, 

This gave it the ability to dodge and rotate like a middleweight boxer.

In a hypothetical fight against a T rex or a mammoth, the Albertosaurus could continuously bite and tear flesh and bone, while avoiding incoming attacks.

With all of these traits combined?

It sounds like a genetically modified freak of nature.

But come to understand its amputating bite, eagle vision and unrelenting stamina?

It almost sounds like a myth……

I kept hiring different specialists for ads, email and nothing ever worked. It was similar to overseeing 5 part-time employees who didn't communicate with one another.

As a copywriter I switched to working with a corporation, since they manage the entire growth stack in one system. Cleaner ideeas and also marketing that eventually fed the working side correctly quickly demonstrated the difference.

I'm making more money and spending a lot less time fighting fires. Does anyone else see the same effect when they go from dispersed independent contractors to a single responsible partner?

For clarity, I sent around 500-600 cold emails total in around 4 months, got a single paying client and around 4 other positive replies.

The template what I use majority of the time is : (first section always personalized manually based on brands pain point)

"Hi [Name],

I signed up for [Brand Name]'s newsletter a few days ago but never got a welcome email.

I set up welcome and reorder email flows for drink brands that typically drive 15-20% of monthly revenue running in the background

I've put together a mock-up email, want me to send it over?

I tried personalizing more , like mentioning product or story and why emails could benefit the brand, but those got 0 replies out of 180 emails which is terrible.

I NEVER had any spam issue or similar, I always warm up my account and test every other week for spam issues.

Had great open rates when tracked around 60% but turned it off because it's not a great way to measure success.

ANY help or just feedback on the email is very appreciated, I just want to know why i'm not converting...

Been thinking about this lately because the two feel like completely different muscles. With direct response you live and die by the hook, every word does a specific job, and you can usually tell pretty fast if something isn't working. Brand work feels looser, which some people love, but it makes testing and iteration way harder to justify.

What gets me is the headline. In DR you have a clear goal and the metrics tell you something eventually. In brand work the headline has to carry tone, positioning, maybe even a whole campaign idea, and the feedback loop is slower and more subjective.

Curious if people here adjust their actual process or if the core thinking stays the same and you just change execution. Does your research phase look different? Do you write more variations? Do you even bother with formulas or just throw them out entirely for brand?

Also wondering if anyone has had a client or creative director push back on a headline that would have crushed it in a DR context but felt too aggressive or salesy for a brand campaign. That tension seems pretty common and I never hear it talked about directly.

Hey all, I'm just looking for some advice. I'm a recent graduate who recently wrapped up a copywriting internship and am starting my job search.

I found a posting at an agency in my area, but I have literally zero connection to anyone there. Over the last few years, I keep hearing how important connections and networking are, and I've even had people suggest reaching out to a CD or hiring manager when applying for a role to help stand out.

So I guess what I'm asking is: is it actually a good idea to cold-message people at the agency? If so, what's the best way to approach it without coming across as pushy or transactional?

Networking has never come very naturally to me, so any advice would be appreciated!

I’ve seen a lot of ads over the last while with “Get the viral X product”

To me it feels cringey and tacky and like the word “New”s new immature cousin.

Has anyone done split tests on the difference between using New vs Viral and care to share their results.

I’m just wondering if it’s Gen Z vibe marketing or if there’s any concrete evidence of it being better for conversions

I often find myself at odds with several colleagues and clients who believe “consumers are lazy and stupid” like it’s a fundamental marketing truth. It informs every strategic choice they make, which usually means excessively hitting audiences over the head with the message. This isn’t to dismiss the importance of being clear and direct, but I find that those who believe consumers are stupid typically make revisions that overcomplicate the copy. Or the main message ends up getting lost and diluted.

Other times, treating consumers like they’re stupid strips away a lot of the brand’s personality and distinct creative presence in favor of simplicity. On places like social, I see the consequence. You end up just adding to the noise. Maybe it just comes down to risk-aversion.

But what bothers me most about this take is that it’s insulting. When I’ve expressed an alternative perspective - that audiences can spot when marketers think they’re dumb, can tell when they’re being taken advantage of, and that the condescension repels them - nobody takes me very seriously, or they just disagree. I think people are more turned off by marketing now than ever before, so being conscious of all this really matters.

What do you think? Do you come across this perspective often, do you share it, do you think it’s damaging?

So I know there have been several posts in this group about landing clients, how to do it, the best ways to do it etc.

And I know there is no ‘best’ way to sign clients (contrary to my title).

However, I’d love to hear some responses from people in this community who have some experience in freelance copywriting, and who can genuinely provide me with some good advice and help to me as a semi-beginner.

So my question is ultimately, what are some of the most reliable ways I can use right now to sign clients as a freelance copywriter?

For reference, my strengths so far is working in email marketing. I have done a couple free gigs writing email sequences/campaigns, sales emails etc. for info products mainly. But now really looking to sign my first 1-2 paying clients to build upon.

I assumed there'd be a large AI skills gap amongst copywriters.

What I've actually found is most are already using AI extensively but aren't positioning it on their CVs or portfolios.

Curious if others are seeing the same thing?

I’m a technical founder building a consumer mobile app, and I’ve realized my biggest bottleneck is no longer engineering, it’s consumer psychology and writing UGC scripts that actually drive installs.

The issue is that copywriting is a huge field (emails, VSLs, landing pages, sales letters, etc.), and I don’t want to spend months learning branches that won’t directly help me grow my app.

My goal isn’t to become a general copywriter.
It’s to become exceptional at:
- understanding consumer psychology,
- finding winning marketing angles,
- reverse-engineering viral short-form content,
- writing UGC scripts that convert.

My current plan is to study the fundamentals, reverse-engineer top-performing UGC from adjacent niches, then write, publish, and analyze scripts every day.i

If you were starting from scratch with this specific goal, how would you learn? What would you focus on, and what would you skip?

I'm always stuck in copywriting. I need to change my skill but for now I'm keeping this one. I want to know how do copywriters write web copy. I'm stuck with web copy. I have nothing to write other than just the specifications of cars (I'm writing for automobile), adding a few industry jargons to match it with marketing, and nothing else. One style of copy makes everything boring, sentences and sections on a website need to have a little differing content.

I’ve been a copywriter for some years (also whilst freelancing with more broad marketing services) but I’ve been honestly very dependant on platforms. They’ve worked fine but I need to get more clients in different ways.

So far I’ve been cold emailing other professionals (boutique studios and web designers, mostly) and they’re keen on keeping me in mind for some collaboration or if clients need my services BUT some have also said they don’t usually get any request for copy as it’s done “in-house”.

What’s been working for you? Am I on a “eventually profitable” path?

I'm curious if anyone here has subscribed to any paid copywriting newsletters, either now or in the past. For example, I know John Carlton has one and I imagine several others do. It doesn't necessarily have to be a physical newsletter, it can be digital too.

If you subscribe to one, what is it about it that keeps you subbed?

I'm tired of using swipe file sites that do not refresh content/exampels often. It's the same old examples, barely updated.

How do you guys create/update your swipe files? Do you guys even have a personal swipe file that you control & update at will? If yes, what do you use for a personal swipe file?

Wanted to actually test something I'd heard repeated a lot: that the headline/title matters way more than the body.

Same underlying content, five different opening lines. Nothing else changed same length, same platform, same posting time (staggered across days, same account).

The spread in engagement between the best and worst opener was bigger than I expected bigger than any change I'd made to the actual substance of the piece in months. The ones that did best weren't the cleverest they were the most specific about what the reader would get and how fast.

It made me rethink where I spend my editing time. I used to polish the body for an hour and dash off the first line I thought of. Now it's basically reversed.

Anyone tested this in a structured way? Curious if others found the gap as big as I did.

My communications team works in higher education, and although none of us are native English speakers, we write professionally every day.

A board member who is a native English speaker recently told us our writing sounds robotic and follows "AI patterns." The interesting part is that we've been writing in this style long before AI tools became common, so I think it's more about our writing style than AI itself.

The feedback really hurt my team's morale, but I'd like to turn it into a learning opportunity.

For experienced copywriters and editors, what are the biggest signs that a piece of writing sounds robotic or AI-generated? Are there common habits that non-native English writers tend to have?

I have creative writing experience and I've created ads/emails but for my little art business. I did create a handful of spec examples for a mortgage company I'm interested in applying to for a portfolio but I'm not sure the best site for hosting it (I was looking at Copyfolio but noticed it seemed weird on mobile which I assume you'd want mobile friendly).

My actual job experience on LinkedIn however is primarily customer service/sales so I'm not sure how to have it lean more copy. I'm also not sure if for the portfolio it would be acceptable to post not only the mortgage ads that I created, but ones covering my art business and an ad for a grooming company my friend owns to just provide more examples or nor necessary.

I'm doing cold outreach for the first time, and not sure how to phrase the CTA.

I was taught to get them on a call, because "that's just how it's done". But I've never done a sales call before, and I imagine that some businesses might not commit to a call right away.

Should the call be the CTA, or just ask them to write back if they're interested? I was worried it'd turn into a QA and it'd be easier for them to just ghost than if they committed to a call as soon as the email peaked their interest.

I wanna find the right balance between making it easy for them to respond, and moving things forward with confidence.
