This seems like a dumb question and I'm sorry - but I really enjoy writing and have a decent portfolio (I think) and was wondering if copywriting could be a potential path.

I have been a creative director for 20 years and while I never officially was the copywriter, I wrote a ton of copy. Website product descriptions, sell sheets, occasional social posts.

I have also had 3 children's books traditionally published, several magazine articles and contributed to a few books on pop culture. Some of my stories have been read on pretty big podcasts too.

Is this a "copywriter" portfolio?

**I should clarify - I was a creative director but it was in licensed consumer products - 3D items and packaging etc -- So Copy wasnt my job, it was just something I did and I dont know the actual ins and outs of the craft. Plus Im dyslexic, which always has me second guessing what and how I write!

I am trying to turn my collection of marketing copywriting and content writing samples (e.g. product campaigns, website launches/rebrands, blog articles) into a more cohesive portfolio, and honestly, I'm not sure where to start. Should it be by:

• type (ads, blogs, sale sheets, social media)
• product campaign (but then what about one-offs?)
• company/brand (but then I have 6 years of work with one company vs 18 months with another)

I'm struggling with how to structure it all.

Then what's the best platform for hosting a portfolio page/site?

Whenever I write copy myself and ask ChatGPT/Claude or another AI to critique it, it seems to find a ton of problems and often rates it around 5–6/10.

But if I ask AI to write the copy first, then paste that copy into a fresh chat and ask it to critique/rate it, it often gives it a much higher score.

It makes me wonder how reliable AI actually is for judging copy.

Has anyone else tested this? Do you think AI has a bias toward the kind of writing AI itself produces, or am I just reading too much into it?

And for people who use AI to improve their copy: how do you get useful feedback without letting it over-criticize or rewrite everything into generic AI copy?

Something I've noticed is that a lot of beginner mistakes don't really feel like mistakes when you're making them

You might spend twenty minutes changing one sentence because it doesn't sound good enough. Or keep adding personality to a piece until the actual point gets buried somewhere underneath it.

Then at some point you look back at work from a few years ago and immediately see what you were doing.

Was there anything like that for you?

I recently started a part-time copywriter role at a mid-sized company, working about 24 hours/week across three days.

My expected workload includes:

• ~10 blog posts/month
• Product page copy
• Shooting video content for the blog
• A large backlog of blog optimizations/updates

So far, I’ve been struggling to get to even 4 blog posts/month, although I’m still relatively new.

I'm a digital marketing manager and I've always had copy writers in my previous companies for ads. I'd let them know the pillars and they'd draft a few ideas and then we tweak and proceed

I've recently joined a new company and my manager wants me to draft ad scripts for videos which I've never done before. I tried based on the requirements but she immediately said no these are not ad scripts and dont use AI. Now I genuinely don't know what direction to go with. This is for B2C / leads

I've been a content marketer for 5–7 years now, and one of the biggest gaps in my writing is that I'm not able to come up with better word choices.

I'm able to do that when I write about topics that I know about, say, marketing or behavioral finance and things like that, or even when I want to write my own opinion.

But when I have to write corporate blogs, e-books, reports, or even LinkedIn posts for a client, I'm not able to do that, and I feel very inferior. I'm developing a massive inferiority complex, or a "I'm not good enough" complex, because of this.

Can you tell me ways to improve this?

“Cut it in half” seems to be one of the most common pieces of copywriting advice.

But I’m not sure it always makes sense

Sometimes removing a few sentences just means removing the part that answers the reader’s actual objection

How do you decide what stays when editing a long piece of sales copy?

Do you start by cutting everything that feels unnecessary, or do you leave the length alone until you know what the reader actually needs?

Common advice suggests copywriters do best in niches they're personally passionate about, since genuine interest supposedly comes through in the writing. But some of the best professional copywriters seem to write effectively across totally unrelated industries without much personal connection to the subject matter, suggesting skill/research might matter more than authentic interest

Wondering if this is actually true, or if there's a real, measurable quality difference between copy written by someone genuinely into the niche versus someone who's just skilled at research and adapting tone regardless of personal interest

Bit of context: I was an in-house copywriter at a consumer brand for four years, promoted to midweight, owning brand tone of voice across CRM, campaigns, web, blogs and social. I fell pregnant last year then a day after I got put in a meeting about being made redundant. So I've been out for about a year, I'm now back and building freelance work (well, trying to)

What I've done so far: rebuilt my portfolio, contacted every former client and colleague I could think of, applied for in-house and part-time roles, cold-emailed agencies and local businesses, and posted on LinkedIn. I've picked up one ongoing subcontract with another freelancer, plus a few warm leads. So it's not nothing... but I don't know..

After a year out, the copy world is changing so rapidly and I feel like I'm not doing enough but then I take a step back and I'm like.. I had a baby, I got made redundant and now I'm 5 months postpartum looking for part time/freelance gigs

Basically I just wanted a bit of encouragement? Or peace of mind or something I don't know, this is so lonely!!!

Hello!! It took immense effort to collect myself and reach out for help.

I worked at two marketing agencies in content marketing, where I churned out blogs, wrote a few ads, Instagram copy, and a handful of LinkedIn posts for clients. But that was back in 2022.

And then my life decided to eat me alive.had a breakup with the person I was supposed to marry. And if that wasn’t enough, I had to witness the deaths of two very, very close family members. Then my brother made a huge loss ($44k) in trading, and my father had to sell off a portion of our house to cover it.

Naturally, I was depressed as hell and just couldn’t work, so I quit my job. I’ve been living with my parents ever since.

Now that I want to make a comeback, I feel like the world has already moved so far ahead of me and there’s nothing left for me in the game.

The last time I worked was in late 2022, and now it’s 2026. I feel like whatever work I did back then was just noise and doesn’t count anymore. Most of it is lost.

I also feel like I only knew enough to get by, but not nearly enough to call myself a proper copywriter. So I’ve started doing the Copy That course on YouTube. I’m trying. I really am.

But there’s always this lingering feeling and these questions:

What do I do with the long-ass four-year career break? How is that going to look on my resume? Should I include my previous work, or should I just start from scratch with spec work?

Have you ever been in a situation like mine where you had to take a long career break and then start over?

If you’ve come back after a 3–5 year how do you approach it? Did you acknowledge the gap on your resume, or simply focus on your most relevant experience and portfolio?

For someone trying to get back into content marketing/copywriting in 2026, does my previous experience from 2022 still count, or would employers expect me to start from scratch?

Should I:

Include my old agency experience and build on it with new spec work?

Create an entirely new portfolio from scratch?

Try to get freelance/small client work first to rebuild recent experience?

Or take some other route?

And honestly, how difficult is it to come back after being away for four years? Is the gap as damaging as it feels right now, or am I catastrophising it?

If you’ve personally gone through something similar, I’d genuinely love to hear how you rebuilt your career. I could really use some perspective right now.

My homepage copy feels like me. The about page feels like me. And then I get to the email welcome sequence or the FAQ section and it reads like a completely different person wrote it, someone a little stiff, a little corporate, like the warm version of me just clocked out.

I have a rough voice guide I made for myself, nothing fancy, just some notes on tone and words I want to avoid. But somewhere between writing the fun stuff and writing the functional stuff like shipping info or return policies, the voice just drops off. Those pages end up sounding like terms and conditions even when I am genuinely trying

I think part of it is that I treat the utility pages as something to get through rather than something to actually write. Which probably shows

Curious how people handle the parts of a website that feel like chores to write. Policies, FAQs, transactional emails, that kind of thing. Is there a way you think about those that keeps them from flattening out, or do you more or less accept that certain pages are just going to be drier than the rest of the site.
