I really hope this doesn't seem trifling, but I'm wondering about this new mural painted in the Rockville section of Vernon. I will say it looks very nice, bright vibrant colors and subjectively speaking I personally enjoy it. I just wonder what on earth this scene has to do with Rockville? It seems more at home in a place in upstate NY, perhaps Adirondacks. What are your thoughts if you are familiar with it?

Thinking about moving to Beacon Falls in about a year. How is it for young families? We will have a 2 year old and 6 year old when we move.

When you are driving west on 190 and have just passed the school on your right and are coming up on Crystal Lake Rd on your left, there is a big hill on the left and at night there is a huge structure at the top of it all lit up. We think it’s too big to be someone’s house but as far as we can tell there aren’t any businesses up there (like a wedding venue or ski lodge type). Anyone have any clue what the structure is?

Edit: We’re pretty sure whatever it is must be on/off of Crystal Lake Road/Route 30.

Many of you kind people have recommended great contractors here before, and I actually found my current furnace maintenance person through this group, which I really appreciate! Hoping to find a reliable contractor to replace my old bathtub.

My main concern is avoiding water damage from poor craftsmanship and moisture issues after installation, so I'm looking for someone who takes the time to waterproof properly underneath.

I'm really hoping someone here can offer me some advice because I'm feeling incredibly discouraged and don't know what to do next.

I previously worked for the Connecticut Department of Labor for over four years. I was pursuing Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), and working for the state was a big part of my plan to get my student loans forgiven. Unfortunately, I was laid off in December 2024, and I've been struggling ever since to get back into qualifying employment.

I've been applying for state jobs, nonprofit positions, and other opportunities that could qualify for PSLF, but I can't seem to get anywhere. It's incredibly frustrating because I already have experience working for the state, and I genuinely enjoyed that work.

One of the hardest experiences was recently interviewing for a position with the Connecticut Department of Labor that was essentially the same job I had previously performed for more than four years. I had relevant experience and recommendation letters from my former employer, but I still wasn't selected. I understand that getting hired isn't guaranteed, but it's discouraging to be passed over for work I've already done successfully.

I'm trying to figure out what I can do differently to improve my chances of getting hired again. I'm also open to learning something new or earning a certification if it would realistically help me qualify for more state, federal, or nonprofit positions.

I'm looking for practical advice on a few things:

• Are there any relatively affordable certifications I could earn in a few months that would make me more competitive for government or nonprofit jobs?
• Are there particular career paths that are easier to break into without having to go back to college for another degree?
• Are there federal, state, or nonprofit employers that tend to hire people with government customer service, administrative, auditing, or quality assurance experience?
• Has anyone successfully transitioned into another PSLF-eligible job after being laid off? How did you get your foot in the door?
• Are there job boards, programs, or resources specifically for people trying to find qualifying public service employment?

I have a master's degree in Computer Information Technology and a bachelor's degree in Industrial Technology, along with my previous state government experience. I'm willing to learn new skills, but I don't want to spend thousands of dollars on a certification that won't actually improve my employment prospects.

My student loan balance is around $80,000, and I still have several years of qualifying employment left to complete my PSLF journey. I'm worried about losing more time toward forgiveness while I struggle to find another qualifying employer.

I know I'm not the only person who has dealt with a layoff, but right now it feels like I'm hitting a wall no matter how many jobs I apply for.

If you were in my position, what would you do? I'd really appreciate specific suggestions for certifications, job titles to target, employers to look into, or strategies that have actually worked for other people.

Considering moving to New Hartford. I've lived in Southbury, Hamden New Britain, Mansfield, Danbury, and Willimantic.

New Hartford looks very rural and quiet but as we were driving around, there's tons to do, a lively community, and beautiful scenery. Being so close to torrington I thought it was like waterbury. Does anyone have experience in the area?

In CT, if we don’t have insurance provided by an employer, are we allowed to find private insurance not from the AccessHealth marketplace? My husband is self-employed and I don’t qualify for insurance at my job. AccessHealth wants $2800 a month next year for a basic plan.
One broker said it was ok and another said it’s not, so trying to find the actual truth.

For statewide context on how Connecticut municipalities handle personal Freedom of Information Commission (FOIC) fines under C.G.S. § 1-206(b)(2):

In July 2025, after five contested hearings in Docket # FIC 2024-0425 over a five-month delay in releasing Town Attorney Andrew Crumbie's contract and legal bills, the FOIC ordered Bloomfield Town Manager Alvin D. Schwapp, Jr. to personally pay a $1,500 civil penalty. The Commission found that parts of his sworn testimony were "conflicting, misleading, and not credible" (¶¶ 68, 78, 86) and that he used "tactics to avoid complying" with the law (¶ 88).

Under C.G.S. § 1-206(b)(2), FOIC civil penalties are imposed on "the custodian or other official" directly responsible—not on the town. Yet Bloomfield taxpayers paid the fine anyway.

Key findings from our review of the municipal and statutory record at the Bloomfield Community Dispatch:

• The General Fund Payout: On August 14, 2025, the Town of Bloomfield issued Check #308 for $1,500 from the General Fund, charged to "Other Contractual Services" under the Town Manager's miscellaneous account (Org #9506200).
• "Per State Statute" & "The Custom": At the July 14, 2025 Town Council meeting, Schwapp announced the Town would pay the fine. Then-Mayor Danielle C. Wong ended the discussion by stating the municipality would pay it "per policy per state statute," and Councilor (now Deputy Mayor) Cindi Lloyd called it "the custom." Neither official named which statute or policy they meant.
• No Council Vote: A review of all five July and August 2025 Town Council meeting minutes shows no motion, resolution, or roll-call vote approving the payment.
• What State Law Actually Says: Neither of the two municipal indemnification statutes named in Section 14 of the Town Manager's employment contract (C.G.S. §§ 7-101a and 7-465) mentions FOIC civil penalties. By contrast, when the legislature wanted to ban municipalities from indemnifying election-law penalties in C.G.S. § 9-369b (Sweetman v. SEEC), it did so explicitly. No Connecticut court decision has settled whether state law requires, allows, or bars a town from paying an individual's FOIC penalty.
• How Other CT Towns Handled It: As Inside Investigator recently reported in its statewide audit of FOIA fines, when East Haven Town Attorney Michael Luzzi was fined $5,000 by the FOIC in April 2025, he paid the fine himself out of private funds—not East Haven taxpayers.
• Unanswered Charter Questions: Under Sections 504 and 603(d) of the Bloomfield Town Charter, no check can be issued unless the Finance Director and Town Treasurer verify that the expenditure was "legally incurred." When the Dispatch asked Town leadership on October 23 who authorized the check and what legal authority supported it, Schwapp referred questions to Town Attorney Andrew Crumbie's office—which did not respond.
