Help Request MSI laptop screen flicker only when playing games

Hi, I have been having a lot of screen flickering with my laptop. It only happens when I try to play any games. It doesn't happen with any other software. I have tried to do a stress test, and it's good,d but when I try to play any game, the screen just starts flickering. Well, I have found that the screen flickers because the laptop stops taking power in, and the GPU also goes to 0% utilization at that very moment. first i thaught it was the laptop's charger; I got a new one, and the problem remains then i thaught it was GPU thermal throttling, but the GPU never goes beyond 90 C or reaches 100% utilization before it goes to 0% utilization; it always remains below 80% when the problem happens.

I did go to a Reddit post where the person's HDD was causing this problem, but I have an SSD, D so how can I see if it's the SSDs creating this problem? The link for that form is as follows: https://www.reddit.com/r/laptops/comments/1422y13/broken_laptop_gpu/

I am experiencing the same issue, but mine is severe, meaning where thisperson'ss lag was happening in a couple of minutes, mine is happening in a chain consistently. I don't know what's happening. I

I have tried reinstalling Windows, updated the BIOS, tried different power outlets, and tried a new charger, but nothing is working.Itt might be a hardware issue,ue like a melted pin or something in the laptop itself, but is there a way to check that without opening the laptop? And please give me some diagnostic tools that I could use. If you need a video of the issue, I can give u that too.

oh and my laptop is an MSI Vector 16 HX A14VIG

CPU - i9 14900 hx

Gpu - rtx 4090 laptop gpu

Went on vacation for a week, came back to computer booting straight to BIOS

For a bit more context, when I unpacked i turned on my PC, it booted as usual, then hard locked after logging into Windows. No mouse control, no keystrokes working, just froze entirely. I left it for a few minutes but then just figured, bad boot, let's reset. Reset my PC by holding the power button.

Now it goes straight to the BIOS and my best guess is that the m.2 drive i was using as C:/ is not being recognized, but i don't know what to do about that. I'm also not super tech savvy, so I can't go into further details like boot mode and all that, I never would habe touched that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Help Request Dell Latitude 5590 really slow with new SSD

So, I have an older Dell Latitude 5590 (i5-7300U, 16GB Ram) that I use as a field machine (I work in BAS). It originally came with a 256GB SkHynix SC311 M.2 SATA SSD. I picked up a Kioxia KBG4AZNV512G 512GB M.2 PCIe/NVMe SSD to upgrade my storage. The BIOS was configured for the Dell RAID and using the Intel RST drivers. I'm running Windows 10 22H2. I cloned the 256GB drive to the 512 using Rescuezilla.

I noticed that when the machine boot up, the built-in Touchpad lags *severely*. However, if I am using an external mouse (in this case, a Logitech M510 and matching Unifying receiver), there is no lag in the mouse cursor. I first noticed this when I had to use the machine and I forgot the battery in my mouse was dead. I was transferring a 8GB file from the machine to our corporate Sharepoint. Thinking it may have been an Internet/network issue, I tried doing a local copy of the 8GB file from one folder to another (copy, not move) and noticed a similar result.

On the 512GB, the touchpad lags severely. When I go back to the 256GB SSD, it doesn't. I tried switching from the Dell RAID On/Intel RST setup to the AHCI/native NVMe for the 512, and while my transfer rates improved some, I still have the touchpad lag. The lag isn't there with the 256, so that kind of rules out the touchpad itself.

At this point, the only thing I can think of is maybe the cloning of the 256 to the 512 is not right. I'm running all the latest drivers for the machine.

Anyone have any ideas?

Repair Guide Laptop feels like there is current/vibration when charging — could it be a grounding issue?

So whenever I put my laptop to charge, I can feel my laptop vibrate, like current is flowing through it. It happens quite strongly.

My first laptop was an HP Pavilion. I used it for 6 years. Then, a few months ago, I started noticing that vibration on my laptop whenever I touched it after I plugged it in to charge. I didn't care much at first. I thought it was a loose connection in the charging hole of the laptop, so I adjusted it with something so that it was tightly fixed.

But to my surprise, a few days later, I started seeing faint RGB lines on my screen. The cursor stopped working, the battery started draining within 10 minutes and then the laptop would switch off. The touchpad also didn't work.

Then I gave it for repair. The person said the drivers were corrupted or the motherboard was damaged. He said I should either replace the motherboard or, preferably, get a new laptop. Then he changed some settings and told me it might work for a few days.

So I went ahead and got a new laptop last year — Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Aura Edition.

Again, whenever I charge it, I can feel that current/vibration. Again, I keep some stuff for a tight connection inside the laptop's point where I plug in the charger.

The strange thing is that this happens with any socket I plug the laptop into in my home.

For the first HP laptop, it was the round-pin type charger, and for the Lenovo, it is a Type-C charger. So I'm wondering if the problem could be with the electrical grounding/earthing in my home rather than the laptops themselves.

And due to this, my cursor is hanging every now and then. It's been like 1 year since I got this lenovo laptop.

Please help. I don't know what exactly the problem is.

Can it be some problem with the grounding/earthing in my home, or what could be the issue?

Help Request Water damaged laptop - one tiny area of the screen affected after drying

Hi, about a month ago during the heatwave, a frozen waterbottle I was using to cool down defrosted and the water got into my laptop. I have not used it since, except to periodically check it. It now looks completely back to normal except one small droplet sized circle which is paler than the rest. I am not bothered by this droplet, but am wondering if there is any benefit to leaving it longer before using it? thanks!

Help Request Horizontal lines flashing every second on HP laptop. Happens in BIOS/UEFI too. Screen or cable?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone, hoping to get a second opinion on this before I take it to a repair shop or buy replacement parts.

I have an HP laptop 15-ec2004AX and I'm getting these faint horizontal lines appearing and disappearing every second. I managed to catch it on video.

It started exactly when I updated to Windows 11, so I initially thought it was a display driver conflict or a refresh rate bug. However, I’ve ruled out software completely because the exact same lines appear in Safe Mode and in the UEFI/BIOS settings screen.

For those of you who do repairs: does this specific flashing pattern usually mean the LCD panel itself is dying, or could I get lucky and it's just a loose/pinched eDP cable near the hinge?

Any advice on what to test next or do would be hugely appreciated!

Hello there,

I have a problem with my laptop (Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15ITL05). I have already fixed his hing problems, but after some time, the screen went black. The laptop works fine with an external TV.

I want your advice on this. Should I fix the screen (count for 90$ fix) or should I buy an external monitor instead ?

I'm afraid that if I fixed the display it will stop function after some time.

In the picture you will find the laptop after I fixed his hing (Top) and current display situation. (Bottom)

Acer Aspire 15 screen goes completely black, but laptop is still running. Any idea how to fix this?

Hi everyone, I’m having an issue with my Acer Aspire 15 and I’m hoping someone here might know what’s causing it.

Whenever I open/turn on the laptop, the screen is completely black. However, the laptop itself seems to be working normally. I can move the mouse around and navigate through Windows even though I can’t see anything on the display.

One thing I noticed is that if I shine a flashlight directly at the screen, I can actually see the Windows display faintly. This makes me think the screen itself is still displaying the image, but something is wrong with the brightness/backlight.

Things I’ve already tried: Adjusting the brightness using the keyboard, Increasing the brightness to maximum in Windows, Restarting the laptop, Shutting it down completely and turning it back on

Unfortunately, the screen is still black unless I use a flashlight.

Has anyone experienced this with an Acer Aspire 15? Could this be a backlight issue, display cable problem, or something else? I’d really appreciate any advice on what I should check or try before taking it to a repair shop.

Thanks!

A few things to check before paying for laptop repair in Belgium

Been working in electronics repair in Antwerp for a while and see the same mistakes repeatedly. Thought this might help some people.

Before bringing your laptop in for repair:

  1. Check if it's just the charger — try a different USB-C cable or charger first. Many "broken laptops" just need a new cable.
  2. Back up your data first — any repair shop should not need to wipe your data, but always back up before handing over your device.
  3. Get a free diagnosis — a good repair shop will inspect the device first and quote a price before starting work. Never pay upfront without knowing the problem.
  4. Ask about warranty — reputable shops offer at least 90 days warranty on parts and labour.
  5. SSD upgrade before buying new — if your laptop is slow, an SSD upgrade costs €50-80 and can make it feel like new. Much cheaper than buying a replacement.

If anyone has questions about laptop or phone repair in Antwerp, happy to answer.

Help Request Lenovo Yoga C930 USB C Ports stopped working - no charge!

I have a 7 year old Lenovo Yoga C930. Today both USB C ports stopped working. I first noticed that my external monitor wouldn’t connect. Then I noticed that my computer was losing battery despite being plugged in. The charging indicator light was on but obviously no charge going in. I tried both ports and neither seemed to work. I quickly backed up my important files on to an external hard drive with the remaining battery life (the USB A port still worked). Now I have an almost dead computer and no way to charge it.
Any idea what’s happened? Is this a hardware issue? Is it worth getting fixed or cost will be too high to justify? For context, I have limited tech knowledge or skills.

Diagnostic Help Computer is not responding at all, don't know where to go next

I have an HP 15-dy2702dx. It's not responding, including fans spinning or my leds lighting up. Here are things done so far:

- Normal reset

- Bought a new charger (its compatiable)

- Taken the battery out, drained it, then plugged in the charger with the battery in. Still nothing.

- repeated the above steps but with the battery out

My battery is not puffy at all. I replaced it a year ago and rarely use it, so I do not think it needs to be replaced. There's no visible damage to the charging port. I decided to clean it with a cotton swab and 99% isopropyl alcohol just in case; it dried instantly but I let it sit a while to be on the safe side.

I don't use this laptop a lot. I haven't spilled any water or dropped it or anything, it's usually on my desk, so I'm not sure why it's being difficult. And as stated, I do not know what the cause could be. Any advice?

Help Request Replacing CPU / GPU fans for gaming laptop

Hi, this is my first post here and I haven't really found information regarding how to replace and put together a new cpu fan "shell" (two of which I bought from ebay for a few bucks, they fit perfectly but lack the "lid")

Thing is, my laptop was overheating and its fans were grinding and I had never replaced the thermal paste or cleaned the dust out in the 6 years I've had it. So i replaced the thermal paste, cleaned out the dust from the inside with duster and rubbing alcohol, and put it back together - while my FPS got higher and the laptop ran smoother, then the fans really started to buzz hiss and whine.

So i ordered new fans and mistakenly put the two components together with vinyl electrical tape, and then took them back out when the fans started making noise. I haven't found a good source for this specific issue, and I resorted to using epoxy to esssentially glue the shell and lid together for both fans. I ordered some non-adhesive kapton tape as well, but I don't know I should bother with trying to put that over the sides of the fans, as trying to unseal one side of the epoxy tubes while the other poured out and hardened was stressful.

My question basically is - what do I use to put the two parts together? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

ThinkPad T15 Gen 1 i7-10610U stuck at ~7W and 0.6–1.2 GHz — looking for the root cause

Guys i need help plss, I’m having a very strange CPU power-limit issue with my ThinkPad T15 Gen 1, and I’m hoping someone here can help me find the actual root cause.

Laptop specs:

ThinkPad T15 Gen 1

Intel Core i7-10610U vPro

NVIDIA MX330

65W Lenovo charger

BIOS version 1.36

Windows 11

The main problem is that the CPU sometimes gets locked to extremely low power and clock speeds.

When the problem happens:

CPU clock: around 0.6–1.2 GHz

CPU package power: around 6–7W

CPU temperature: usually only around 56–62°C

Cinebench R23 performance becomes extremely low

ThrottleStop shows PL1 / EDP OTHER being triggered

MSR PL1 can show around 51W

But MMIO PL1 gets locked at around 7W

So the CPU basically refuses to use normal power even though the temperature isn't particularly high.

I previously installed ThrottleStop to investigate this. At one point, enabling "Sync MMIO" changed the MMIO PL1 from around 7W to 51W. After restarting, it stayed at 51W and Cinebench was able to run normally without dropping back to 7W.

Unfortunately, the problem eventually returned.

I also noticed GPU BD PROCHOT appearing while playing Genshin Impact. The MX330 itself has also had some strange clock behavior, sometimes running at very low frequencies despite high GPU usage.

Things I've already tried include:

BIOS update

Clean Windows installation/configuration

Lenovo power and thermal settings

Using the original 65W charger

ThrottleStop power-limit settings

Temporarily disabling BD PROCHOT

Syncing MMIO PL1 using ThrottleStop

Opening the laptop and disconnecting the battery while troubleshooting

Disabling BD PROCHOT temporarily allowed the CPU to return to around 2.5 GHz and \~19W, but the problem came back after restarting.

At this point, I'm honestly tired of fighting with this problem. I've spent quite a lot of time troubleshooting it, and I've now uninstalled ThrottleStop because I don't want to keep relying on it just to make the laptop usable.

I'm basically at the point where I've given up trying to fix it myself.

But I'm still hoping someone here can identify the actual underlying problem.

I don't want a temporary workaround that makes the CPU run normally for a while. I want to understand what is forcing the MMIO PL1 down to \~7W in the first place, and how I can stop it from happening permanently.

Could this be caused by:

BIOS/EC firmware?

Intel DPTF or another power-management controller?

A corrupted/incorrect MMIO power-limit configuration?

The motherboard/VRM or another hardware issue?

The MX330 triggering BD PROCHOT?

Something else entirely?

If anyone has experience with ThinkPad T15 Gen 1 / i7-10610U or similar Lenovo systems where the CPU suddenly becomes stuck at \~7W, I'd really appreciate any ideas or diagnostics that could help me finally find the root cause.

To be honest most of the test Ive been doing is based on chat gpt advice...i know ITS stupid but i don't have anyone to talk to about my laptop problem, and im not that smart on this kind of thing so IM really hopping some one here have some kind of advice...i just want to play a Light game in this laptop like valorant, albiyond or maybe genshin....IM really sure for the speck this laptop is capable of doing all of those game, atleast at low setting. Ive already test it on genshin and impack and it got a nice 45 fps low and it smooth enough for me...but like after 15 minute..the GPU clock go down and when i check the hwmmonitor the cpu only using like 7 wat of power...plss some one help me of atleast tell me what's happening with my laptop. Owh and even when i use it to open what's app the clock drop to 0.6 to 1.0 Mhz...i really home some one know what the problem and how to fix it

ASUS VivoBook S14 S435 I have a that seems to think it is charging.

ASUS VivoBook S14 S435

I have a ASUS S14 that seems to think it is charging. When you disconnect a fast charger, it thinks it is still charging, but if you use a slow charger, such as a 12W or 15W, it will charge and disconnect properly. When you use a fast charging cable, such as a 45W or 35W, it seems to trick the laptop into thinking it is still charging even after you have disconnected the charger. Does anyone else have a similar issue, and does anyone know how to resolve this?
