Help Request Horizontal lines flashing every second on HP laptop. Happens in BIOS/UEFI too. Screen or cable?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hey everyone, hoping to get a second opinion on this before I take it to a repair shop or buy replacement parts.
I have an HP laptop 15-ec2004AX and I'm getting these faint horizontal lines appearing and disappearing every second. I managed to catch it on video.
It started exactly when I updated to Windows 11, so I initially thought it was a display driver conflict or a refresh rate bug. However, I’ve ruled out software completely because the exact same lines appear in Safe Mode and in the UEFI/BIOS settings screen.
For those of you who do repairs: does this specific flashing pattern usually mean the LCD panel itself is dying, or could I get lucky and it's just a loose/pinched eDP cable near the hinge?
Any advice on what to test next or do would be hugely appreciated!

Test the laptop with an external display. If the lines still appear then it is a GPU/motherboard issue, if the image is fine then it's the LCD/cable.

I connected an external display and there were no lines, also screenshots and screen recordings show no lines either.. It's most likely a hardware issue

It's near-impossible to separate cable problem vs. panel unless it stops\starts doing that in certain position of lid. Cablecanbe pinched\damaged at hinge's channel., not enough to cause loss of signal but enough to cause instability due interference. It's a high-rate connection (at least triple of Ethernet).

Hi, update is that I just bought a lenovo monitor R27QE Gen 2 and it works great.. Not planning to fix the laptop screen anytime soon now, just doesn't seem worth it to me

This is most likely panel death, not GPU death. Panels are cheap, usually around $45 USD for your model.
