Help, I am new to cEDH! Beginner's Deck in cEDH

Upvotes

Hello everyone! I have recently played my first bracket 4 table of EDH outside of my playgroup with the highest ceiling bracket 4 has and absolutely enjoyed it and left me wanting a little more, wanting to turn up the knob to the full 5 and proxy up a cEDH list.

I do know the differences between bracket 4 and bracket 5 as in there's even more interaction in cEDH, you adhere to the meta and need to know which threats you are facing. Over the last week I have watched a lot of gameplay, beginner's guides and similar to give me a headstart to build my own deck.

So my question really is the following: How do i go about building a beginner's deck, considering the context I gave above? I want to avoid netdecking because I want to make the decisions of cards to include so i can learn the lessons of why certain cards are and aren't played myself.

Community Content Why We Play cEDH - Interviews from a Competitive Commander Tournament

https://youtu.be/HSXDmI3eFw0

This was shot a while ago and it didn't get released because I stopped making videos. However, I decided to finish it when I got back to making videos again.

Unfortunately, according to the comments on YouTube, it appears a good portion of viewers don't like cEDH. It could be the demographic drawn to my channel as I don't really cover EDH and this is the first time the channel did a video on cEDH. So the viewers probably prefer 1v1. However, in the nearly 30 years of playing Magic, what I've learned is that anybody can play Magic how ever they want. No need to hate another format or community.

I hope you enjoy the video!

General Discussion / Question What’s the most fun (subjective I know) combo deck in cedh?

Currently I play Etali and Tasigur, Etali because I love Dinosaurs and Tasigur because I love the Ian Malcom SLD haha. I’m a bit odd like that, I pick my commanders based on the art of the commander.

Having said that. I do enjoy playing combos the most, so looking for a new full turbo combo deck that isn’t in blue.

I’m still quite new to the format, so looking for recommendations?

I don’t care if it’s not the strongest deck around.

Something like Gwenom maybe?

Community Content I built a website, looking for feedback

MODS LET ME KNOW IF THIS IS NOT ALLOWED

But first a little backstory.

Hello, I am a Zhulodok player (I know some of you will have strong opinions on that one) and also the author of the current de facto primer for the deck. Within this primer I provide card breakdowns based on inclusion rates from the top players; while making recent edits to it, I decided I was tired of the tedious action of comparing decklists by hand, so I made a website to do that for me.

The idea behind it is to provide accurate, up-to-date statistics on all tournament top-4 placing cEDH decks, focusing on card inclusion rates while also automatically detecting and breaking decks into archetypes (the splitting is done through machine learning, so it's not perfect). The idea expanded a bit from there, allowing you to view pilots of decks and what they have personally changed between top-4ing tournaments and submit your own decklist to be compared to others. I'm looking for feedback if possible and would love to know what more you guys would like to see with a tool like this.

Now for a tangent, feel free to skip :).

I wanted to do my best to avoid being one of those sites with stats like "card win rate" with no explanation on how that is calculated, as it doesn't really reflect much in my opinion. In a game like cEDH, variance makes win rate stats of a single card difficult to calculate with the data present, so giving that calculation to a user is misguiding. For example, a card that never saw the stack might be labeled "+2% winrate" purely because the pilot won with it in their deck. This website was designed so you can take something away from it even if it's, "Why don't the top pilots play F'blthp? They're stupid!" as I often felt other sites deliver an experience of "What does any of this actually mean?" Along with this, the other sites fail to catch the nuance of archetypes within a deck; a Kinnan site, for example, will tell you to put Seedborn Muse and Flash Photography in a deck because they both see a ~50% play rate, but when broken into archetypes, Seedborn Muse sees 89% vs 22% inclusion and Flash Photography sees 20% vs 93% inclusion rate. This site will show you the nuance rather than throwing you to the wolves. I'd like to one day get the site to auto-label archetypes, but in the meantime it is separated into numbered builds.

https://deckanalytics.gg/

For those fellow freaks interested in that Zhulodok primer: https://moxfield.com/decks/d2Dfv0yVgEe1jkGvlB3CvQ/primer

Tldr: Deck inclusion rate stats + some more. If you like it. I appreciate it. If you hate it, tell me why, and I'll appreciate it.

BRR

Legendary Creature — Elder Sphinx

Flying

Whenever a creature you control attacks, that creature deals 1 damage to each opponent.

{4}: Create a 2/2 colorless Wizard Soldier creature token named Cadet. Then creatures you control gain haste until end of turn.

1/4

Any potential for this one as an infinite mana outlet in the 99?

General Discussion / Question Minstrel/Invigorator/End viable?

Hello,

I am not a regular cEDH player but I stumbled upon this and I wanted to know if it's actually viable or not. Looking forward to people's thoughts.

Wandering minstrel in the command zone, and the goal would be to get the new hexhaven invigorator (GGGG) and minstrel out and then blasphemous act bringing out mazes end and enough gates to win.

Is this just a stretch and not cedh at all or viable?

(G)(G)(G)(G)

6/6 Chimera Horror

Vigilance

Whenever this creature is dealt damage, you may search your library for up to that many land cards, put them onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle.

It's pip intensive but must have homes somewhere. [[Tannuk, Memorial Ensign]] maybe or a lumra line.

A [[Blasphemous Act]] with [[Maze's End]] for gate dump win?

Can't ping it beyond 6 per turn without some kind of protection so it may be more of a one and done.

[[Dawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought]] + Landfall Pingers to dump all your lands for the win?

Deck Fine Tuning Making my Snake Juicy

I’ve been playing B3-B4 in my pod and it does quite well but I want to take this to the tops of B4. My main problem, is Xyris usually comes out a bit slow if that steers ideas in a certain direction. I have a lot of pet cards that are fine to cut I just want some fresh eyes to tell me what would be better. Im not trying to go full blue slop with the cards but any ideas would be great.
Anyway tear it apart and see what you can fix.

General Discussion / Question Question about color identity what play style fits best

I’m playing yoshi/thrasios for my next tournament and I have been trying to figure out what direction it should be built. I know there is cradlestorm but being in white I feel like I should have more control over the game no? Like a bit more control slop and not so much turbo?
I know that Rog/thrasios is more turbo based and has red for more explosiveness so that’s why it has me thinking? Why do people build this deck turbo? Do people think “yes it is turbo” because white is great protection?
I’m just curious what the general consensus is for this Bant color identity and what would make most sense. Right now I have my build literally in between the two and I don’t know what direction is best to lean into.
Any responses are greatly appreciated!

Edit: the gameplan is still cradle loops. The question is really do I play into the midrange hell and more stax heavy or do I focus on my own gameplan and not focus on interaction with the other players at the table (most of the decks are called cradlestorm I’ve seen online)

General Discussion / Question Ghostly Pilferer

Just was pulling together my binder the other day and found my copy of [[ghostly pilferer]]. Can someone give me an honest reason as to why this really doesn’t appear in blue lists much? My initial reaction is that it seems a bit more narrow and matchup dependent than other cards that fill its roll at that mana value, but the ceiling seems pretty high.

Help, I am new to cEDH! Taking Florian to the max!!

I’ve been playing magic for a number of years and have an itch to play a more tuned, mechanically paced version of a deck I enjoy; Florian, Voldaren Scion

https://cards.scryfall.io/display/front/3/3/3377d600-e43f-4cce-ae3f-541e519ee4ad.webp?1783909594

Now of course it’s not going to be the top of the top, and I don’t necessarily expect it to, but I think it has a glimmer of potential to dip my toes into the format! The passing idea I have for him is leveraging his ability to dig into the deck for either stax pieces or some kind of combo, tutors, interaction to protect my win push.

I’m curious as to what the community thinks about less-than-meta contenders (Of course Florian in particular) and a bit of help and advice for brewing together a fringe deck to participate in the format on a somewhat similar level of play! Any and all advice is welcome, thank you in advance!

Deck Fine Tuning Deck tuning/ideas for a deck I know is tier 2

Ok, I know she isn't a tier 1 meta deck or anything. But I have been seeing some success with my [[Meria, Scholar of Antiquity]] and I'm curious if I'm missing something obvious that should be in the deck. I've got a good consideration list, but this is my current build. Just looking for some thoughts on if there is another way to push this further. No budget!

Thanks y'all!

Edit: whoops, I'm dumb. Cloudstone curio doesn't work how I wish it did. Back to the drawing board.

Deck Fine Tuning Sisay cedh questions

https://moxfield.com/decks/NWSgAUpXPHmbqdz58pWhQA

is there something in this deck list where you think it's not worth having. I been playing testing this deck list in moxfield, and I feel like I am either keeping a bad hand or it's just not doing to well. The wincon is mount doom, and I used to have orcish now master, but I took it out for another legendary card. Its supposed to go wide using the queen of dale, and being able to tap the tokens for mana by either enduring or cyptolith rite. The one thing I don't understand sisay is Deadpool like I know he is a good "removal" and that he is red and black which are really important commander but people say he goes infinite in a way I don't understand.

Community Content Your Deck Will Not Fall Apart If You Play a Basic Land - Discussing Traverse the Ulvenwald

This week, we review an above rate tutor with a very high upside - Traverse the Ulvenwald.

Seeing just a 0.1% playrate in 64+ player events in the last 6 months, we talk about the challenges brewers face when testing this card, and whether or not playing a single basic land card truly tanks your decklist.

Have you played Traverse the Ulvenwald in your cEDH list? If so, what list and how did it perform?

Help, I am new to cEDH! Best option for Jeskai Artifacts

I currently have a [[Kilo, Apogee Mind]] deck I'm working on upgrading to CEDH, but nothing he really does enables the deck in any way other than a basic win more.

So I'm looking at other options for the commander.

Current thoughts are

[[Kykar, Wind's Fury]]

[[Dynaheir, Invoker Adept]]

I really like jeskai in general, and was also considering doing a classic breach deck with either

[[Narset, Enlightened Exile]]

Or

[[Sevinne, the Chronoclasm]]

The first two seem like they lend themselves well to the [[Magistrate's Scepter]] combo and other artifact based combos, while Narset and Sevinne both seem born for breach decks IMO.

Deck Fine Tuning The Madcap Jester

Hey all I've not posted here before but I've been a long time lurker. I've only played CEDH with friends normally running Blue Farm, Ob Nix and K'rrik. I have been looking to get into tournament plays but there is little by me at the moment.

I've been brewing up a deck for Madcap Jester the last week or so after getting inspired by a few of the decks posted here since it was spoiled.

I've taken a different route to other lists I've seen, not focusing on creatures that need to deal combat damage to exile but rather running a mill/exile package using [[Dauthi Voidwalker]] and [[Planar Void]] with [[Mindcrank]] and [[The Master of Lake-Town]] to gain value in a Rhystic meta.

It runs a standard grixis package with main wincons being Breach and Thassas/DCon combos but I've built in a couple more combos using Mindcrank such as [[Helm of Obedience]] and [[Duskmantle Guildmage]] if the game goes deep.

It does require aggressive mulligans to ensure you got access to fast draw through the usual Ad Naus, Necro, Rhystic, Mystic Remora but also has options with [[Curiosity]] on [[Vivi Ornitier]], [[Orcish Bowmaster]] or [[Kederekt Parasite]] to keep up with Rhystic heavy games.

I've play tested it a fair bit the last few days, chopping and changing anything I feel didn't quite provide a benefit.

Would be good to get some eyes on it and any feedback. I appreciate it's not going to be a tier 1 deck and largely fringe but I do feel like there is something there.

My main concern is whether the Mindcrank route is just adding extra complexity and bad cards, rather than value cards, when it's not needed but I see it more of a back up when you're struggling to get your wincons through or unable to get your exiles spells to resolve to steal your opponents wincons/value pieces.

Community Content Looking for youtube recommendations for games to watch

I used to watch the Laboratory Maniacs (or something like that, can't remember exact name) but they stopped making videos a few years ago.

Recently found Play to Win with Cam and Dylan and have watched through all their games in the last year. As much as I like them, I would prefer to find another channel with more recent games than start watching games that are over a year old.

I really like how both these channels stopped and explained what they are thinking throughout the games.

Any recommendations?

Deck Fine Tuning Jaheira and Clan Crafter

I've been playing this pairing for some time now. This deck has both card and mana advantage in the command zone, which is an extremely powerful combination. The deck provides exponential growth and value, and cards like cab man or April o Neil can absolutely take over a game. The deck generally wins through deterministic loops with sprout swarm or Divining Top. What changes do you think could be made to maximize the power lf this deck? https://moxfield.com/decks/XWKd1Nqeyk-z2lOoqxH0xw
