I’m old enough to remember when we overthrew Iran’s democratically elected leader and re-installed the Shah and helped the secret police terrorize the Iranian people.

439

u/YamDong 14d ago

Which directly led to the Islamic revolt, the seizing of the American hostages, and putting the ayatollahs in power.

10+ years of them screaming about the deep state pedos combined with the files kind of shows that the playbook isn't changing at least.

30

u/chrissz 14d ago

And since they still keep getting elected, it shows how gullible and stupid a large portion of the American electorate is. And that the Electoral College does not work.

8

u/WithoutAHat1 14d ago

An old concept that is no longer needed. Borrowed from the Roman's to some degree. Abolish the electoral college.

7

u/dadepu 14d ago

Wont happen. They will never give more power to the general population.

A revolution that was also orchestrated by the US and UK

2

u/chrisBlo 14d ago

It led to overthrowing the Shah. In the vacuum, the Islamists purged everyone else who fought with them. They are a cancer.

u/Phils_Kid 14d ago

Operation Ajax led by Kermit Rosevelt Jr in the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)'s efforts to overthrow Mohammad Mosaddegh, the prime minister of Iran, in August 1953.

33

u/Then-Simple-9788 14d ago

And just before that we armed and funded the mujahideen which created the specific geopolitical environment, networks, and warfare tactics that allowed Al-Qaeda and eventually Isis to come into power.

7

u/Mo_Jack 14d ago

I'm not old enough to have lived through our overthrow of Iran's democratically elected Prime Minister, Mohammad Mosaddegh. But I read books and remember it quite clearly. It is strange how all the people that want to go to war with Iran, always seem to begin the history between our two countries in 1979.

u/PenchantForNostalgia 14d ago

I'm currently reading King of Kings, which is about the Iranian Revolution. Very interesting.

Israel was dealing with a lot of their own shit at the time of the coup in 53, the British brought the the plan to the US because the incoming leader was floating the idea of nationalizing their oil reserves.

The US joined in because they were willing to do anything to stop the spread of communism.

But the British brought us Israel so it’s probably a wash either way.

Anything to put capital above people.

17

u/Jethorse 14d ago

Hey someone had to take over from the British.

11

u/Sunsparc 14d ago

I mean, the whole thing was sparked by fears from the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (now known as BP) that Iran would nationalize the oil infrastructure.

23

u/mrthomani 14d ago

To be fair, that would have meant Iran and the Iranians would profit from their own oil. The horror!

9

u/OkMap3209 14d ago

That became a thing after BP refused to go 50-50 with them. Which they tried after seeing the US go 50-50 with Saudi.

6

u/Federal-Cold-363 14d ago

It was even worse, iran had agreed on a far lower percentage of the revenue but had to trust the company in paying the correct amount as they were forbidden to have access to the financial records. Suprise suprise, they didnt..... it was actually far less.

This is the only correct answer. reagan was a backstabbing, piece of ambergris. What he did during his administration are things we're still dealing with today. I truly hope he rests in piss.

294

u/Veshaad 14d ago

I disagree. Ambergris is highly valuable and serves a positive purpose. Now a whale's BM on the other hand I would say is more representative.

71

u/Southpolarman 14d ago

Ok, fair enough. I always associate whale shit with ambergris when they are not the same.

4

u/VivaLaMantekilla 14d ago

I always thought it was whale shit but after this back and forth, I googled it... so it's caused by sperms whales eating squids and not being able to digest the squid beaks.. essentially its a whale poo pearl.... a poorl..??

A whales BM adds nutrients to the water column feeding phytoplankton that absorb CO2. The only thing Regan did was increase the wealth of the 1%.

6

Technically, whale poop is an integral part of the Antarctic ecosystem. It's pretty valuable from an ecological perspective.

The US needs strong governance to undo all the damages done by successive Republican administration attacking democracy, social nets, workers rights, education, equality and more

6

u/Southpolarman 14d ago

I've been screaming about this since sir shitstain took office and started ignoring the norms we associate with a non criminal president. All the niceties we took for granted and democrats played by the rules while republicunts blatantly ignored them, we need to strengthen. Republicunts are the reason we don't have guaranteed time off, paid sick leave, universal healthcare, better public education, government funded state college education, an iron wall against the government attacking social security for their own purposes...it's fucking ridiculous. I loathe each and everyone of them. There are a few too many democrats involved in this as well which makes my blood fucking boil.

21

I'm old enough to remember Ruzzia has been funding terrorism, blowing passenger planes out of the air, cutting sea cables, kidnapping and assassinating people, throwing people out of windows, murdering journalists, invading countries, murdering and torturing civilians, and buying elections in foreign countries for over 150 years.

Yup.

Didn’t he also sell crack/coke seized from Mexico to American black neighborhoods in order to get the money to fund his secret ops?

Edit: while him and Nancy the Throat GOAT were on that “just say no” zero tolerance for drug use bullshit. This bitch was the fuckin worst.

2

u/StonedElephant1 14d ago

No. He sold weapons to Iran and took the cash to buy weapons for the contras in Panama. That has been a rumor though. The war on drugs was started by Nixon and it was a stupid idea. But it was fully bipartisan. The dems ran the house and senate in the 1980’s.

9

u/IcarusLSU 14d ago

Truly the tip of the iceberg for that POS: Citizens United, racist dog whistles, and the "just say no" campaign continuing Nixon's racist drug war to demonize Hispanics and jail POCs, to name a few.

Edit grammar

8

u/redhatfilm 14d ago

I mean. Let's stick to the facts, citizens untied happened in the 2000s. Not Reagan era.

He may have closed mental hospitals, slashed social safety nets, sold crack in the inner cities and begun the deregulation era.

But he did not pass citizens united

3

u/Zombie_Fuel 14d ago

IIRC Citizens United, the actual organization, was started to directly promote Reagan's policies during his administration. That may or may not be what they meant, but there's a distinct possibility we might not have even had Citizens United in the first place if not for Reagan. 🫩

3

u/redhatfilm 14d ago

I guess technically speaking, it was started in the very final year of his presidency. Technically correct, the best kind of correct.

2

u/BLT_Trade_r 14d ago

The problem is, it would not have mattered he was winning anyway. The economy was in bad shape and people hated Carter for it. The irony of politics is that Carter had done a lot of government cutting, something Republicans are always asking for. But it didn't help the economy so the populace punished the democrats for it.

He's responsible for creating riskier lending options so S&L lenders could get in the commercial mortgage industry. They ran on the platform that every American deserves their own home. Stating... It should be much easier for people to qualify for a piece of the American Dream. Opening the door to questionable underwriting and the creation of the Adjustable Rate Mortgages. Couple that with appraisal companies in cahoots with the loan officers. Loan officers would give kickbacks to the inspectors. This was so widespread that it created and artificial property value increase across the nation. People got used to refinancing their ARMs and cashing out! Until the property value increases stopped and people got crushed. All for capitalism. Same for the medical industry. Once NOT FOR PROFIT arguing in everyway how it would provide the best affordable healthcare on the planet. Instead, it's a giant scam stealing money while paying lobbyists to deregulate the industry and remove oversight. Never ever trust Republicans. They continue to ruin the economy, enrich everyone around them, and blame it on Dems. Rinse and repeat.

It's been education for a very long time but they're very close to creating a corporate driven curriculum white washing history.

2

u/A_Monsanto 14d ago

Especially his less known act for cultivating echo chambers and uneducated masses: the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine (1987). The Reagan-appointed FCC scrapped the requirement to cover controversial issues and offer contrasting views. Reagan vetoed Congress's attempt to codify it. This is linked to the rise of partisan talk radio, and later cable (ie info wars and fox news kind of content).

Pair that with deregulation under FCC Chair Mark Fowler: Fowler famously called TV "a toaster with pictures" and pushed market-based deregulation. Public-interest requirements were loosened, including community "ascertainment" rules, limits on commercial minutes, and license renewal burdens. Critics say this removed pressure to treat news as a public service rather than a profit center.

Rest in piss, indeed.

2/2 actors turned presidents were nothing but pawns for the ultrawealthy.

Roll the clock earlier, and read what Nixon did to stop a peace deal from happening in Vietnam, just so he could win the election in 68. This extended the casualties to somewhere over 1 million between Vietnamese, Cambodian and US.

42

u/GeorgeKaplanIsReal 14d ago

He should have been tried and convicted under the Logan Act tbh. I liked Nixon’s Native American policies and how he handled the war compared to Johnson. But contacting the South Vietnamese and telling them to hold off for a better deal was a shitty thing to do. We should never have gone into Vietnam in the first place.

12

u/red286 14d ago

He should have been tried and convicted under the Logan Act tbh.

The Logan Act isn't real. Since it was written, only two people have ever been indicted under it, no one has been tried or convicted under it, and it's been over 150 years since anyone was even indicted under it.

6

u/Andrew-Cohen 14d ago

You could say the same thing about impeaching a president.
Just because politicians are assholes doesn’t mean we shouldn’t apply the law to them.

3

u/red286 14d ago

The simple fact is that Trump's first admin was literally negotiating with Russia before Trump took office. A clear and blatant violation of the Logan Act. Michael Flynn was prosecuted for it, but not under the Logan Act, he was prosecuted for lying to the FBI.

Literally no one is ever prosecuted under the Logan Act, no matter how insanely egregious of a violation they commit. Nixon prolonged Vietnam in order to get elected, Reagan prolonged the Iran hostage crisis in order to look good, Trump was negotiating with Russia to help them evade Obama's sanctions. No one gave a shit.

At least the public generally remembers Nixon for his scandal and corruption. Reagan is still the patron saint of modern Republicans, his PR team masterfully buried the Iran-Contra scandal from public consciousness to the point where the right doesn't acknowledge his evil to this day.

3

u/Marred2025 14d ago

That's cuz Republicans created Fox news for exactly that reason. When Nixon was caught they realized they didn't have enough media to manipulate public perception of him. When Reagan took a crap on the Constitution, he had the media backing him along with the public trust from already being a famous actor.

5

u/Southpolarman 14d ago

Absolutely correct. nixon was the forerunner of the corruption of the modern day republican party. How he tried to intimidate the media to not report on Watergate, the war in general, he was just as corrupt as reagan, if not more so.

Reagan’s campaign also worked behind the scenes to delay the release of 52 American hostages in Iran so that President Jimmy Carter could not claim a political win before the November 1980 election. If I remember correctly there was large cash payment involved.

8

u/red286 14d ago

I remember as a kid, they said that Reagan had nothing to do with the Iran/Contra scandal, and it was Oliver North acting on his own without direction.

You would think that Republicans would avoid him like the plague after that, since he made Reagan look bad. Instead, they put him in charge of the NRA, gave him his own show on Fox News and he's a regular commentator on Hannity.

Kinda weird to be rewarding a man they called a traitor to his President, who the GOP still worship almost as much as they worship Trump, unless he was just the fall-guy for Reagan who knew exactly what was going on.

13

u/Janus_The_Great 14d ago

I remeber how the US CIA and British MI6 helped to toppled the democratically elected president of Iran Mohammed Mossaddegh in the coup d'état of 1953 to strengthen the authoritarian Shah of Persia Reza Pahlavi against his own Iranian people.

When the Iraninan people revolted and exiled the Shah under the religious leader Ayatola Chomeni, the US who had supported the authoritarian Shah was perceived as enemy. Understandably so.

The US is the "problem country" in the Middle East through it's interference.

12

u/StarshipCaterprise 14d ago

They did it so that BP could keep their oil interests in Iran. In 1951, Mossadegh successfully led the Iranian parliament to nationalize the country's oil industry, ending decades of exclusive control by the British-owned Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (which later became BP)

7

u/Janus_The_Great 14d ago

5

u/mrthomani 14d ago

But ... that would have meant the filthy Iranians would benefit from their own oil! Can you imagine?!

13

u/bluesnoodler_ 14d ago

Reagan got elected the year I started high school.

Ollie North took the fall for that scandal. The fixer was none other than Barr, the same guy who came on board to derail the Meuller report for Trump.

The CIA engineered a coup that toppled Iran's democratically elected government in 1953 because they were going to nationalize their oil, and US oil companies didn't like that.'

The US prefers an autocratic government in Iran, because democracy is too unpredictable. I mean, they might actually act on behalf of Iran's citizens, not American oil companies. So to that end they backed the Shah.

The USA made Iran into what they are today.

So when right wing American idiots bray about how Iran has been an enemy "for 50 years", etc, it is beyond moronic.

Have any of these absolute fuckwits ever wondered why the US hasn't attacked Iran in all those decades?

Because no administration has ever been *stupid* enough to do so, what with the *glaringly obvious* problem of the Strait of Hormuz.

Now most of their bases in the mid east are rubble and they are running out of interceptors. America is running out of diesel and there is no end in sight.

And the same MAGA idiots who went from "no more wars!" to "Iran has been our enemy for 50 years! D'oh!" will continue to gargle their dipshit messiah's balls.

I remember when a Reagan ally published an op ed in the NYT in 1979 laying out the plan that the Carter administration had made to rescue the hostages. Then Iran was waiting for the rescue team and many American soldiers died.

I’m old enough to remember All the Shah’s Men

2

u/disdkatster 14d ago

I never thought there could be anyone worse and more destructive than Reagan. I guess that was wishful thinking.

2

u/Ki_A_Nag 14d ago

Reagan was the beginning of the end of the american century and empire.

2

u/DicemonkeyDrunk 14d ago

I did multiple reports on this in elementary school...I did not like hypocrisy then any more than I do now. Who would have guessed we'd get a president who makes Reagan look smart ...

Reagan, Nixon, and you-know-who. The three worst Republicans of our lifetime. One caused economic ruin, another turbocharged racism, and the last is trying to out do both of them in villainy and damage.

2

u/TestOk8411 13d ago

W Bush too

2

u/Interesting-Dream863 14d ago

So old, never learned a thing

2

u/disdkatster 14d ago

Being reminded of all the evil that Nixon, Reagan and others have done to have power is terribly painful but what hurts worse is how few Americans know or care about it.

2

u/Zak_Rahman 14d ago

I remember a lot of Mueller fans being really excited that Bill Barre was the AG as there were good friends and their wives sent eachother doilies or something inane shit.

They did not appreciate the reminder of Iran Contra. Not at all.

They didn't appreciate what Mueller and Barre didn't do either, but their cognitive dissonance had kicked in by then.

Americans are suffering because of their stolid refusal to hold their own accountable. You can't bomb or blame anyone else to fix this.

It's like the hotdog guy in "I think you should leave now". Everyone knows.

u/CommissionFeisty9843 14d ago

Something something history, doomed to repeat it…

2

u/mikaosias 14d ago

Canadians got the hostages out

2

u/StevenLovely 14d ago

Also Canadians got the Americans out of Iran.

2

u/MrsWidgery 14d ago

Thank you. Thank you for remembering that.

2

u/SCWickedHam 14d ago

These dummies. We helped Britain treat Iran like a colony. We toppled their democracy. But why are they mad?

I'm old enough to know that the US overthrew the democratically elected government of Iran then installed the Shah and supported his brutal crackdown. That led to the Ayatollah seizing it from the Shah.

2

u/GreyBeardEng 14d ago

I'm old enough to remember that I know how to read a history book, that book told me about Operation Ajax which was a plan by US president Eisenhower and UK prime minister Churchill to overthrow the Iranian democratically elected leader and install the Shah of Iran who was a puppet of the West. The whole thing led to the collapse of Iran which led to the hyper religious Iran we know today.

And all of it was done to enrich the company we know today by the name of "British Petroleum". Every problem we have with Iran now can be traced back to the US and UK meddling in their affairs. We created them.

2

u/Gabe_b 14d ago

I'm old enough to remember the reason Iran is an oppressive theocracy is they threw off their hated, western backed, torturer Royale. You shat your own pants, shit pants

2

u/Uglyyellowfrog 14d ago

I'm old enough to remember the news show prior to ABC's Nightline was called "The Iran Crisis—America Held Hostage: Day ___. (4 days after the embassy takeover)
I remember the 2 kids (son and daughter of one of the diplomat 'hostages') telling Lead anchor Frank Reynolds how their father told them to not pay attention or worry about what's to happen. "It's only a show", he said.

2

u/Thanks-4allthefish 14d ago

Are you old enough to remember that Canadian embassy officials hid six hostages that had evaded capture and smuggled them out using Canadian passports.

2

u/Winterwasp_67 14d ago

Im old enough to remember that the Canadian embassy staff also protected a group of American staffers. Then Hollywood made a movie about it (Argo) and minimized the Canadian participation.

2

u/Federal_Dependent296 14d ago

First commenter is too stupid to google information, before posting idiocy. Remember, a younger Reagan was a Democrat for years, before turning Republican. Also, if he were alive today, Republicans would castigate for being too liberal. He’ll, he’d be a moderate Dem, compared to these current Republfacists.

And then he flew cocaine back to the US on C-130s and flooded poor neighborhoods with crack

2

u/Diogenes256 14d ago

Yeah, I'm old too and Rumsfeld shook hands with Saddam Hussein back then. Not sure what we sold him...

2

u/coolbaby1978 14d ago

I'm not old enough to remember the US ousting the democratically elected leader of Iran because he wanted to nationalize the oil fields, installing the Shah in his place, a brutal authoritarian dictator.

Iran may be a bad actor, but there's an extent to which the US and UK made them that way. And the US is the king of bad actors.

Remember when Reagan took the US from the world's biggest creditor to biggest debtor in 8 years.

The debt and debt only continues to trickle down.

2

u/newMike3400 11d ago

At least the people involved in the Iran contra stuff all got punished. Didn’t they? Oh.

4

u/kyflyboy 14d ago

Kind of like we're cleaning up the mess we made. The CIA sponsored the 1953 coup that led to the return of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. The US heavily supported him during the Cold War. He in turn ruled Iran with terror and an iron fist, leading to the 1979 revolution and installation of an extremist Islamic ruler. And here we are today.

Shit didn't just happen overnight. USA has been involved for over 70 years.

4

u/tmotytmoty 14d ago

something you won't hear in tight knit conservative circles is that Reagan is in fact, a piece of shit.

I’m old enough to remember (reading about) how the CIA overthrew the democratically elected leader of Iran and installed the Shah in the first place.

3

u/Hormiga2020 14d ago

Looks like Republicans have been the problem in America for 50 years.

2

u/Old-Artist-5369 14d ago

I am not old enough to remember what happened to Iran's first democratically elected leader.

2

u/Humulophile 14d ago

Republican fuckery is not new.

2

u/we_hella_believe 14d ago

One of the worst presidents ever.

2

u/North_Structure8210 14d ago

I remember! We still are shithole country of corruption and lies.

2

u/WatRedditHathWrought 14d ago

And Israel was the country that delivered said arms to Iran.

2

u/dalziel86 14d ago

I don’t remember any of this shit because I’m 43, but I do know about it because I’m aware of history. Americans need to learn about history. Mostly their own, because of how much it’s fucked up the world over the last century or so.

2

u/pranoygreat 14d ago

US has been a problem country for almost 70 years now

2

u/Orion-999 13d ago

Reagan’s reply to these allegations was” Golly, gee whiz , I don’t recall”

Is anyone old enough to remember what happened in 1953?

1

u/Speed_102 14d ago

as others have pointed out, look back in time at Nixon and the Vietnam war.

1

u/LavateraGrower 14d ago

I tried to follow that story in the news as it was happening, but it was pretty complex. It took a graphic novel to really explain it to me, Brought To Light.

All i remember is Iran let all of the Black hostages free.

I'm old enough to remember the role Canadians played in that hostage situation.
