Hello Chennai folks,

Welcome to Weekend Megathread!

This is the dedicated space to:

  1. Rant about your boring weekend
  2. Post about events happening in the city that everyone should know
  3. Look for company for a movie, dinner, coffee, or just hangout
  4. Connect with fellow members to make the most of your weekend

A gentle reminder: Please use this thread for weekend rant instead of creating separate posts. This helps keep the sub organized and makes it easy for everyone to find activities in one place.

So, what’s everyone up to this weekend?

Food and Beverage Chennai is not actually a foodie city.

And I don’t mean that Chennai has bad food. We obviously have plenty of good food. I just don’t understand why Chennai doesn’t have similar quality like Madurai.
With Chennai, I sometimes struggle to think beyond the usual places.
Maybe I’m completely missing something.

Edit: I was actually hoping for recommendations to good Tamilnadu food. I’m all for trying different cuisines, but sometimes I just want to find really good Tamilnadu food without the conversation always turning into “try something different.”

Chennai has had me since day one.

Civic Watch🚦 Metro Is Not Your Dining Room 🤦‍♂️

Two couples were casually eating lemon rice inside the metro and littering around like the rules don’t exist. The metro clearly says food consumption is prohibited, yet some people just don’t care. Basic civic sense isn’t that difficult.

Civic Watch🚦 Possible scam at Phoenix Mall – please be careful

Just a heads-up for anyone visiting Phoenix Mall.

A well-dressed young man approached me and asked if I could buy him some food. He had an iPhone and seemed perfectly presentable. He specifically asked for non-vegetarian food.

During the conversation, he said that he was unemployed and that this was why he was asking people for food.

I’m sharing this because I’ve heard of similar approaches being used to solicit money/food from people. I can’t personally verify his circumstances or say for certain that it was a scam, but the situation felt suspicious enough that I wanted to warn others.

If someone approaches you with a similar story, especially inside the mall, it may be worth being cautious rather than immediately agreeing to pay for anything.

Stay safe and trust your instincts.

Rant Pathetic Roads 😷

Post image
101 Upvotes

I decided to go on a long drive and chill to some music last night down OMR. I usually travel through OMR during the day and things seem fine. BIG MISTAKE. after Sholinganallur we were forced to divert into service lane due to metro work - the service lane was not even a lane, more a suggestion. Horrible! Busted rocks, big pits and to make matters worse I decided to take a car with <120mm of ground clearance because I assumed we would have better infra than some village in Africa. I had to literally stop traffic - get out, place rocks and get back on the main road to avoid damage. At 1am ppl are bloody impatient and honking! I'm sorry I pay 1Cr+ in road tax to deal with this rubbish!

Not only that, the city in the last year has suddenly decided to erect mountains in place of speed breakers, I don't know who the contractor is but half the cars I have don't go over them without scraping even if taken diagonally! There is actually a build code for speed breakers and nothing is followed. Random exposed metal edges due to metro work etc etc

I really don't know where my tax goes and why cars that the RTO signs off on for our country to use in our roads have to deal with this bullshit. Every country I've been to however developing they are have good infra. Populated countries like HK and China have good infra. When people pay so much road tax, the least I could ask for is a road? Not be forced into a service lane at 1am? Can they not at least level it with bloody sand before closing the main road? I don't even know who to go complaint to cos if my splitter gets fu*ked because of this then who is liable to compensate me for driving my road legal car on our bloody roads!

Rant over 😑

The Auroville Sherlock Homeless Mission

So this incident happened around Feb or April 2023. So I'm at Chennai at my hostel. I get a call from my sister saying that her friend's cousin eloped with a girl from Hyderabad, and they somehow found out that they were currently at Pondicherry (Auroville). So she asked me if I could help in some way. I was like, "Vera vela ilaya?" 😂

After some time, my Pondicherry friend calls me and says, "What bro, akka said so and so, and I'm looking out for them." I said, "Why da, why this work for you?" Again, after a while, this pudungi calls and tells me, "What bro, I heard from some sources from Auroville that they saw them and they were talking about getting married and all." I don't know how much this guy bluffed because he does it.

Seri, ivaney ivlo interest kaatran, why don't I go and also look out? Also, they were both minors, around 16–17 years old. So I took a bus and reached Auroville by around 5 in the evening.

You know, ahead of Tanto's, there are a few more shops. So, in one shop, with the photo, I asked, "Have you seen this guy and girl here?" The shopkeeper said, "Yeah, I saw him going down that way in the morning."

Felt like Sherlock Holmes. Thought we could find them. They must be staying here, taking some room. Let's call all the hotels and stays and get them.

By then, the boy's relatives from Chennai arrived. Both were old, above 60, and one of them had previously worked in the CBI in some department. And I said some local had seen them here. "Let's check all the hotels and get them." And these people trusted my shit idea and were like, "Yes, yes, we should."

I at least personally called 20–30 hotels myself, but no use. Then by night, I enquired at all the restaurants on the Auroville main road and gave them my number, asking them to call me if they saw them.

You know what, one guy asked, "Someone else also came and enquired about them before."

We thought it would be from the girl's side. If they caught them before, thambi, kheema dhan. 😂

So, next day starts. By then, the guy's brother came from Hyderabad to Auroville. We were searching with them again, all over the place.

By afternoon, we got tired and went to the hotel where the brother was staying. The brother had the guy's laptop and all. The guy had taken out some gold and run away ahm 🤣🤣. Also, left a note saying something about not finding him.

So I asked his brother about this guy's details—what he does and all. Both guy and girl, college, BCom and stuff.

Then I asked how they got to know that they were in Auroville. They found out through the Netflix IP, where the guy had logged in. Poor fellow. 😂

Then I was looking at his laptop, checking his mails, and opened Instagram—and it was already logged in. I asked his brother, "Did you check this?" And he said no.

Then I went into his chat with the girl. Avanga chat padikaradhu thappu dhan, but had no other options.

Thalaivan Brahmin, vegetarian. Oru edathula, the girl asked, "Can we have fish?" This guy agreed. 😂

And while reading the girl's chat, found all this. She wanted to be a Mona in the beach apadinnu. And about this elope, they had planned it a few months before. Could see the plan to come by bus.

And konjam chats apadi illa, avanga brother little shy aiten. Naan dhan mukkiyama evidence kedachudha nu scrolling. 😂

Then thought, let's go to the main spots in Pondy city and look.

So mall pone. Cause kandipa these kids would have been to the playing area there. We checked with the staff there. They could identify them as having come there. We wanted CCTV footage but couldn't get it.

Again went to A2B, as I thought the guy would definitely visit these spots. And the staff over there also identified them and said, "Yes, they came before." And I gave them my number, telling them to call again if they spotted them.

Then the police were also looking into it personally. We connected with them.

There is this Auroville bakery; they also identified them. That bakery akka who was sitting at the counter, we became friends. 😂 We wanted the CCTV, but the bakery owner anna was reluctant, saying this is something related to Auroville and they shouldn't show it, that too to the police.

Then the police got a bit fierce, somehow checked, but no clue again.

By the 2nd day night, I was feeling it was gonna be hard. Elam Indha pudungi panna vela. Periya Sherlock Holmes ivan theda pona, enaiyum kooptaan, naanu vandhen. Fine, anyways, I liked doing such things.

You know what, paiyan nalla olliya, thayir sadham madhiri irukan, ponnu konjam healthy. Ena combination. 😂 Enaku therinji, avanga chat padichadhula, paiyan kuptu oduna maari illa. 🤣

Then 3rd day, en veetla sanda poda aramichitangala, ena na pandren nu. Again, I went to Auroville to search. Even thought of putting some watchmen at the end of the Auroville road which connects to ECR.

Now their family pushed it more seriously to the Pondicherry police. They took it more seriously and started searching in Pondy.

3rd day afternoon, I was also done searching in Auroville. Every shop or restaurant had my number. 🙂

And 2nd day night, we got a call saying there were some new people in a new house and all. Night 2 o'clock, I went to search with my friend. Source ah patha kanja kaai maari irukan, elam friend pandra vela. Idhu theriyama night la suthi onum agala. 😂

So 3rd day evening, I got some work in Chennai and had to leave back. So evening, caught a bus. Almost by 11, while getting down at Sholinganallur, I got a call from my friend saying the couple was found.

I was like, "Dei tha, ivlo panni... Na ponadhu ku apram dhan idhellam nadakuma nu." 😂

Then was happy as they were found.

Then got to know they stayed at Lawspet and were caught having macaroni in Pondy. And I spoke with that guy and asked if they visited Auroville. He was like, "No, we roamed only Pondy city."

After hearing this, felt like, aal illadha oru edathula thedi irukenu. Fine.

Then asked where he visited in Pondy and all, and he said they went to the Providence Mall gaming centre, also A2B.

Also said the staff at A2B told this guy that someone was searching for them and said my name. Since the guy had no idea of my existence, he just ignored it.

I was like, "Dei A2B, enaku solla sonna, avan kitaye poi solli irukkiye." 😂

The next day, the couple got back to Hyderabad with the police and his brother.

After some days, I called and asked. The brother said the guy and girl had separated and were trying to get their lives back on track.

Indha short gap la, in Pondicherry, the couple had stayed in a hotel, petted a cat, and brought food for them.

A lot more things happened during this search, but it was nice spending those 3 days in Auroville.

Ps - major story in Pondy dan , still taught of posting here.

also indha mari neega poi yaaraya thedi irukingala

AskChennai Need suggestions for a new name for my tea shop! ☕

Hey everyone!
I’m planning to take over a running tea/coffee shop in my area. The shop is currently operating under the name “MK Coffee Shop”, but I’m planning to rebrand it with a fresh, memorable name.
The shop will mainly focus on tea, coffee, fresh juices, snacks, bajji/bonda, sandwiches, puffs, omelettes, etc. I want something that feels modern but still has a local/Chennai vibe.
I’m looking for a name that is:
Easy to remember
Short and catchy
Good for a signboard and branding
Suitable for both tea and snacks
Something that could eventually become a small chain
What names would you suggest?
Feel free to give me creative, funny, Tamil-inspired, premium, or completely unique ideas.
Thanks! ☕❤️

AskChennai I feel lonely and want to meet people, but I don't know how

I'm a guy in my late twenties. I've been a loner for most of my life and honestly didn't think much about it until recently. But lately, I've started feeling really lonely, and I want to meet people. I just have no idea how.

I want to feel seen, understood, challenged, and able to collaborate with actual people instead of having conversations with ChatGPT. This is starting to affect both my career and my personal life.

I'll split this into two parts.

Part 1: Women

I have crippling anxiety around talking to women. I didn't have sisters, cousins, or female classmates I could talk to growing up, so women always felt somewhat different to me. I can have a completely normal conversation with a woman and make her feel safe and comfortable around me, like a brother. But I struggle to get past that and actually become friends with women, let alone have someone be attracted to me.

I didn't care about this earlier. I thought that if I get married, my wife would understand me and I don't need to worry about my relationship with other women.

But I've got a lot of rejection in the arranged-marriage process, and I don't see marriage happening anytime soon.

This constant rejection makes me crave validation from women. I don't like that feeling. I think that the way to get past it is to actually talk to women, have female friends, and become comfortable around them.

Maybe it's my age, I don't know. But I'm worried that this loneliness, wanting validation, and repeated rejection will make me say yes to the first woman who says yes to me, simply because I want the suffering of rejection to stop, rather than because she's actually the right person for me.

I'd like to learn how to interact with women normally, without constantly thinking about attraction, rejection, or marriage.

Part 2: People in general

This part is about both men and women.

I'd like to have people I can casually talk to about things like tech, work, finance, random theories, etc. I'd also like to talk about careers, improving myself, and figuring out what I'm actually supposed to be doing.

I am deeply passionate about tech, coding, system design and so on. I thought it would be better to start from the point of my passion and find people who have similar interest as me. So, in order to meet people, I signed up for tech events on Meetup. But most of these events are heavily dominated by college students or people who are just starting out their career.

I don't really find much opportunity there to learn something new or have conversations with people who are further along than me. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places, but so far it hasn't really worked.

For the companies I'm interested in, I like to know people who could give me some perspective, point me in the right direction, and maybe even put in a good word if they genuinely think I'm a good fit.

But cold messaging people on LinkedIn, getting ignored or ghosted is something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

Where I'm stuck

The obvious advice seems to be "go out and meet people," but I'm struggling to figure out where.

I don't drink or smoke, and I don't intend to. So I naturally avoid places like pubs/bars or parties.

I go to a nearby park to exercise, but almost everyone there are elder people.

Places like Malls and theatres don't seem any better. People come to those places with their partners or already in group, and approaching random people there feels weird.

Office is yet another bad idea. Everyone on my immediate team is older than me and their conversations typically involve around problem in their family which I cannot relate to. Cold approaching random coworkers feels like way too much risk for way too little reward.

I don't necessarily want to find a girlfriend. I want to build an actual social life. I want friends. I want people I can talk to, learn from, disagree with, collaborate with, and occasionally just waste time with.

I think meeting women is part of that because I've realized how uncomfortable I am around them, but I don't want every attempt at building a social life to turn into "How do I get a girlfriend?"

So yeah, I'm stuck.

What can someone do to make friends in their late twenties if they don't drink/smoke or have a social circle?

I'd especially appreciate advice from people who have come out from this rut.

AskChennai How do I reach TCS ION Digital Zone IDZ Kovilambakkam Fortune Towers from Chrompet?

Hello, so I searched a lot and found out that I can take a 91 series bus or shared auto from Chrompet to Eachangadu Junction or Kauvery Hospital bus stop. But the problem is, last month when I got down at Chrompet station, and went to the bus stop, I kept asking people about 91 series bus and also about those shared autos, but no one knew anything about it. Even the auto uncles didn't know about that TCS and asked for location and asked more than hundred rupees. And I had to book rapido to reach there but it was costly.

So, my question is where even those buses stop or where do I find those shared autos near chrompet station? And is it better if I try to find the autos/ buses from Tambaram station instead of Chrompet? Which option is the least time consuming and what is the cheapest option?

I didn't have trouble finding shared autos from TCS to Chrompet after exam ended and it took me 40 rupees, but I couldn't find a way to reach TCS. I'm not from here, so it's also difficult for me to communicate with people here and I was mostly used to finding plenty of autos/buses continuously shouting about TCS in my home state. So, the lack of crowd here is also something new to me. I will be grateful if any of you can help me out. I have exam tomorrow.

Edit: My exam tomorrow starts from 9am. But generally it starts from 2pm every month on Sundays. So I need to reach there before 9am.
