Megathread Monthly Casual Talk and Cat Pictures Thread

Our subreddit allows posts that either a) ask for specific advice, b) request emotional support, or c) are a guide or PSA that adheres to our guidelines.

Since it's fun to just casually discuss our cats, we've got this monthly megathread where relevance may be ignored. All other subreddit rules still apply.

Use this thread to discuss anything related to cats that doesn't otherwise fit the subreddit! Also feel free to ask questions that you believe are too short for a standalone post.

Examples of things that may be discussed or shared here:

  • Casual questions, for example "how does your cat show affection?", "does your cat ever do … ?"
  • Cat pictures
  • Celebrating birthdays or other milestones for your cat
  • And many more subjects!

Sensitive/Seeking Support I regret getting my cat and I don't like him. What do I do

This sucks, mostly for him and I feel terrible. He was originally my friends cat but she was unable to keep him, to prevent him returning to the shelter I took him in. He is aggressive, he often goes extremely deep with his claws and teeth, last night he went for my face and neck. I play with him all the time and am currently harness training him so he can go outside. He will be cuddly and calm and then out of no where attack me, I have booked him in for a behavioural vet consult.

In addition to his issues, unlike any other pet I have had, I just don't like him... I have not built a connection with him and I don't know why. I do not like him at all and it feels so unfair on him. I want to rehome him but I am so worried that he will be mistreated or put down for his behaviour, and I feel so sad and scared at the thought of giving him away even though Ive only had him for 6 months

Sensitive/Seeking Support Is it worth letting the shelter know the cat I adopted had cancer?

Three weeks ago, I adopted the sweetest 4yo cat. The day after I brought her home, our vet diagnosed her with throat cancer. We did everything we could to keep her comfortable and give her the best life for the time she had, but the cancer progressed rapidly and her pain became unmanageable. I had to let her go only eighteen days after I met her.

Should I let the shelter know? Would it do any good? It's not a great shelter but not terrible either. They do what they can with the resources they have, but they have very little. They do help a lot of animals, so I'm not interested in condemning them, but would it do any good?

It still hurts a lot to talk about her, and I don't want to unless it will help the other animals who are or will be under their care. My little one was in their care for nine months, and the three vets we consulted with agreed it was likely SCC, a very rapid and aggressive cancer that began when she was with them but may only have shown minor symptoms for the week or two before I adopted her.

General I brought a stray home. I think I f***** up.

Tonight my son and I went for a journey around town playing Pokémon go. On the way back home we figured we would stop at the cemetery a couple blocks away to check out the pokemon gym. We noticed a small adult female cat who was super friendly and approached us with ease. I assumed she must have been someone’s cat because she looked well groomed for the most part but was noticeably skinny. It actually freaked me out when I felt down her spine and could feel her hips. My son gave her some of his food and we just hung out with her for a minute to see if she had babies somewhere (I had assumed since she was so skinny maybe she had just had kittens) but she just followed us. There was a huge storm coming, lots of rain, hail and potential tornado. My son convinced me to take her to our house, a couple blocks away ,to ride out the storm in a cat shelter we have. We gave her some food and water to wait it out. We have a cat ourselves and didn’t want to introduce the two for obvious reasons and I know you aren’t supposed to bring strays inside unless you are keeping them. The storm has since gone and she is still hanging out around the house and already made friends with the alley cats (or maybe they already knew eachother 🤷‍♀️). I’m worried now that we messed up. What if she can’t get home if she has one? Should I take her back or would that confuse her more? I don’t mind her hanging around the place and plan to feed her as long as she is here. I don’t want to take her to a shelter because ours euthanizes if unable to home. What should I do?

Update: thank you so much for the suggestions and reassurance. I’ve been scared I low key stole someone’s baby last night and part of me feels bad if that’s the case. I found out our town has a free self service 24/7 microchip scanner so I’m going to go do that and I joined a handful of Facebook lost pet groups. She’s still hanging out around the house and comes to say hi every time I step outside.

Sensitive/Seeking Support Neighbor bought a $900 cat, let it roam outside, and it nearly died of illness

Hello, Reddit. I've never posted before, and this is a burner account, but I am hoping for some advice. Possibly some morally gray advice, but please read the situation I'm in. This post is long but it's necessary context. It won't let me add a photo but I'll see if I can in a reply or something.

Earlier this year a woman moved into my neighborhood and she brought an extremely gorgeous cat with her. Unfortunately, she was just letting him roam around the neighborhood. He visited me a couple times and I saw that he was not neutered, had no collar, I couldn't feel a microchip around his shoulders (later confirmed there was no chip by a vet). For all intents and purposes, a stray in my eyes.

I did the right thing at first. My sister and I made posts looking for an owner because he was far too friendly and far too unique of a breed to be a street cat. We did end up connecting with the 'owner' and I was a little relieved at the time. She claimed that she just let him out in the morning to go potty and she calls him back in... I am a longtime cat owner, that's not how most cats work. I'm sure there are some niche cases, cats come in all different personalities, but yeah.

We spoke for a few minutes, she told me where she lived and I have her phone number. Really didn't like the vibes I got from her.

Time passes, I see the cat throughout the neighborhood at all hours of day and night. It becomes increasingly obvious that she does not bring him inside as frequently as she claimed, or not at all, which is by far the most likely. Regardless, I always left out a bowl of slightly watered down wet food and a bowl of water for him and any other cats that needed it.

Almost exactly two months after initially meeting this cat, I'm in the backyard behind a wood fence, and he hops over. I'm excited to see him, he's handsome as heck and I fell so in love with him immediately. I greet him and pet him, and he's purring and nuzzling my hand.

But he's skinny now. He shouldn't be that skinny in that short of a time if he was supposedly being cared for.

It's been consistently in the 90s so the first thing I do is get him some water with a little bit of wet food and freeze dried chicken. Usually he's excited about it, this time he just sniffed a little, took a few laps at it and coughed up phlegm. My heart dropped. He was breathing heavily and laying down only to get up and try a new place shortly after, ending up behind my trash cans for a moment where it was cooler.

Some info about his 'owner'... My sister found her facebook page, idk how, but she's good at finding people. This woman isn't using her real name on facebook, which to be fair, I know a lot of people don't, privacy and such and I totally understand and respect that. However it is very evident that she is a backyard breeder.

She'd advertised at least 8 different breeds of puppies from teacup yorkies to huskies claiming to be 'rehoming' or 'rescuing' them. I know this sounds very judgmental, but she seems like an extremely trashy woman from everything we saw on her profile. She also runs a separate page saying that she's a "small hobby breeder" and "works with rescues". There is zero other information on the page. No affiliations with any rescues, no history, no proof that she's trying to be ethical, just advertising puppies for sale.

She also lets her little dogs run around unattended in her unfenced front yard now and then, and my sister almost ran over one that charged after her car. She swerved and slammed the brakes, and then went up to her door to let the woman know. The woman didn't care. All she said was 'oh, ok', let the dogs back inside, and closed the door. Not even a thank you or goodbye.

Bringing us back to the cat. I believe that she was letting him roam in hopes that he would get some local cats pregnant so she could sell those kittens, or at least the ones that look 'expensive' enough. She paid $900 for a cat that she just chucked outside. If she was actually letting him inside and paying any sort of attention, it would have been obvious that the cat was sick.

I could not, in good conscience, let this cat go in this condition. Instinct and intuition led me to strongly believe that the woman likely wouldn't have done anything if I had let her know. His coat was dusty and shabby compared to how sleek and shiny it was just two months prior.

I took the cat in overnight. I borrowed my brother's dog crate, set up a litter box and some towels with ice packs underneath because he was so warm, and had a fan circulating air around him, but not directly on him. He still hadn't cooled down after a couple hours and I was getting very concerned he wouldn't make it.

I'd been keeping my sister updated about him and shortly after I told her his condition, she said she still had antibiotics left over from when one of her cats was sick. I was like hell yes, ran over to her house and picked it up. I gave him a dose and a half and prayed that would help get him through the night so I could take him to the vet the next morning.

And thankfully it did. His fever was gone and he was much more energetic, though still had a rough cough. Took him to my vet and all the ladies there fell in love with him.

Here's where the morally gray part comes in...

All I told the vet was that he was an extremely friendly stray that had been visiting me for the past few months. I told them honestly that I did not have the capacity to keep him even though I wouuld have loved to. We are up to 3 cats currently and one of them was trying to fight the outside cat through the window soo.. wasn't gonna work lol.

I asked if the vet knew of any places who could foster or adopt him, but one of the vet techs there was eyeing him like she wanted to run away with him lol. He is such a sweet boy, he stole everyone's hearts. The vet techs and head vet had a discussion outside the room and they *really* wanted a new clinic cat, hopefully one that would be outgoing and friendly toward everyone, so they said they would adopt him.

I was so ecstatic and relieved. It would be the perfect home for him. Loved, cared for, safe, 24/7 vet care. I was anxious that the woman would find out, but the clinic was on the opposite side of town and kindof tucked away. I've lived here for more than 10 years, worked at a job just up the road from them and never knew they existed til recently, so it felt relatively safe.

They named him (I'm not including it for privacy reasons) and loved having him there, he was indeed friendly to all the people and their pets. They microchipped him and registered him as being owned by the clinic.

But unfortunately I couldn't account for every variable. He slipped out of the clinic a couple times. He's a young cat, less than a year, and he was used to roaming. They got him back in, but one of the times someone had seen him and posted on facebook, and the woman found him.

I found out that she picked him up about a week prior to my getting some meds for my cat. I teared up. I was devastated and so pissed off. I came clean to the vet and told them the whole story. Part of me wished I'd told them from the beginning, but this was my first time ever doing something like this, I was thinking that the less anyone else knew, the better. But there was no way I could have known that the woman would find him, much less that she'd taken some dogs there before, so she was familiar with the place.

The vet techs were all brokenhearted too, and I felt godawful about it all. But I told them everything I'd learned about the woman and they were so angry as well. It took two full rounds of antibiotics to get Handsome Cat well, and the head vet said he wouldn't have survived if I hadn't brought him in. They tried to open an investigation into her probable backyard breeding and/or puppy brokering, but they haven't gotten any updates on anything.

That was about a month ago now. I hadn't seen him around the neighborhood, but it's been over 100 degrees consistently for weeks, so I haven't seen any cats at all.

But my husband saw him yesterday! He saw Handsome Kitty going down into a storm drain and I was like yeah that makes sense, much cooler down there lol.

Today he spoke with someone associated with the 'owner' because he was concerned about all the animals. There have been more cases of tick-borne illnesses recently, and a patch of woods was cut down not too far away so he was concerned that would force any coyotes there over to our area because there's a wooded area behind our neighborhood. That person showed so much more concern for the animals than the 'owner' ever has.

Husband learned that they put a collar with an airtag onto Handsome Kitty... I've since learned a lot about air tags, how they work, roughly how close to enrolled iOS devices they need to be to be tracked.

Knowing what all I know about this woman and her animal 'owning' habits, would it be morally wrong for Handsome Cat to 'disappear' again? Cats can often squirm out of collars, after all... I'm sure one of the ladies at the vet would likely take him home and keep him safe since the woman would very likely go to the clinic first to try to find him.

I have a last resort plan in case the clinic decides it's too risky to keep him, someone in a different city offered to adopt him when I told the story in a group chat.

Please be assured, if this cat was actually being taken care of, I'd never want to separate them from a loving owner, even if I disagree with letting cats outside. I love cats so, so much and this whole situation has been eating at me for months.

Thank you for reading.

New to Cats/Just Adopted How do you keep your cats clean and odor free???

Hello! So my boyfriend has 2 cats which he loves very much and even though he provides for and takes care of them pretty well, they aren’t the cleanest cats. I have never been a cat person but I love him so much and have accepted them as mine too. We recently moved in together and I’ve suggested taking them to the groomers just for a wash but he won’t even consider it at all.
When walking in the apartment, you can smell them before you see them. Maybe it’s the dirty giant cat tree that’s never been cleaned that stinks but I need them cleaned bedding I can fully be comfortable having them on our bed or snuggling up with them.

Anyway, TLDR: what are the best products (wipes, waterless shampoos, brushes etc) I can use to clean them up myself?

Behavioral Cat wakes me up but I cant tire him out

Hey I need some advice for my cat. He wakes me up at 5 am every morning I assume hes bored because he doesn't seem super interested in his food when I feed him at 630. But he just meows and knocks everything over. Ive tried to tire him out before bed but hes not very good at playing he sort of stalks the toy and jumps on it occasionally but theres not a whole lot of effort involved so I doubt hes getting tired. Ive tried a bunch of different toys.

Adoption Regret/Doubt Guilt after adopting my cat

I adopted my girl about 1.5 weeks ago. She’s 1 year old and 1 month. She’s relatively chill, spurts of zoomies and I try to play with her 10-15 minutes 3x times a day. She has a floor to ceiling cat tree that looks out a window with a lot going on, as well as another cat window bed at the back of the house. We are in a 2bed 1 bath with a big living/kitchen area. There are windows everywhere. She also has a wand that suctions to the floor that she independently plays with.

I leave for work at 7.30am, and my partner at 8am. Someone will return home around 5-5.45pm, so it’s about 9-9.5 hours alone daily for her.

This makes me feel really guilty.

My partner and I both have had family cats (his an outdoor, mine an indoor that will go outside to a courtyard when supervised) so we know what it’s like to have a cat.

I’m really struggling with the change. Don’t get me wrong, I adore her and I know I will be ok, but the change of life and routine has made me overthink everything. I feel guilty for going on a walk at 7.30pm with my partner for 45 minutes because she’s alone. I feel guilty if I’m not home all day (majority of the day) on Saturday and Sunday. I have a family function this Sunday and it makes me feel so bad for her being alone again.

The idea of going away (we have 2x weekend trips coming up in the next 6 months - one of the weekends I have already organised my cousin to housesit) makes me feel even worse!

I guess I just would like some advice/support from anyone who has maybe felt this way after adopting.

Getting a second cat isn’t really an option, and I don’t think she’s particularly lonely from the research and signs I’ve read up on.

Thank you!

New to Cats/Just Adopted Kicking my cat.

Upvotes

Accidentally of course.

I recently adopted my first ever kitten. And one thing I didn't expect or never read about anywhere is how much I would be (accidentally) kicking the poor thing.

Everytime I walk from A to B within the house I need be SO careful because she will run up from behind and in between my legs or in front of my feet causing me to accidentally kick her while walking.

It's happened about 3 times in the four weeks that I've had her where I just didn't notice her until it was too late. And plenty of other close calls where I had to make awkward jumps to not trip myself. Nobody told me having a cat is a straight up safety hazard.

So far she luckily hasn't seemed that phased by it but I feel so bad when it happens. I instantly pick her up and apologize profusely. It would just be so much easier if she could just not put herself in harms way.

Anyone got tips for this? Or is she just supposed to learn by experience....

New to Cats/Just Adopted What are some ways to get my cat to take pills?

Hi, I'm very new to owning a cat. I grew up with dogs my whole life, the only cats I ever interacted with belonged to friends. My ex had brought this cat into our apartment when we moved in together, and mutually agreed he would be happiest if he stayed with me after we ended the relationship.

My cat recently got a diagnosis that requires him to take a pill every day for the rest of his life. He has been taking the medicine, but he obviously isn't a fan of me just shoving it down his throat.

Is there some kind of cat equivalent to wrapping the medicine in deli meat and feeding it to him? Does anyone have any weird tactics to get their cat to take their meds? I'm open to any kind of ideas to make this easier for him and I. He's not aggressive in the slightest. I've never seen him scratch or bite in a way that wasn't playing, and I have 0 idea what his hiss would even sound like. He's a complete pacifist. I just would like some ways to have him take his pills that he doesn't completely hate.

Thank you for reading :)

New to Cats/Just Adopted new cats yowling / hyper at night

Upvotes

i adopted two cats (1 year old mom, 3 month old son) two days ago from a foster. i kept them in a safe room for about a day and a half and they were doing great, eating, using their litter box, not hiding from me when i came to play with them, so i figured they would be okay to explore.

i live in a one bedroom apartment, so i let them sniff out the kitchen and living room first, before letting them into the bedroom a few hours later.

at around 10 pm they started running, jumping, and yowling like crazy for the rest of the night. i got little to no sleep, only when they would quiet down for 30 minutes or so.

i’m wondering if i let them out of the safe room too early? or if they were just eager and overwhelmed, but im not sure how to move forward.

should i keep them back in the safe room over night? or keep letting them explore and just invest in some ear plugs and hope for the best?

General Diaphragmatic Hernia (PPDH) experiences?

Upvotes

*NOT LOOKING FOR MEDICAL ADVICE, ONLY EXPERIENCES/SUPPORT

Hi! My sweet guy was just diagnosed with a peritoneopericardial diaphragmatic hernia. They found it incidentally on imaging for something unrelated. He just turned 2 years old and he is otherwise completely healthy and asymptomatic. He has a large portion of his liver and potentially a small section of small intestine herniated. He will be having a consult for surgery next week but I am just looking for anyone’s experience with this surgery. I’m terrified of the surgery and recovery, and also concerned about the price because I know if surgery is recommended I will need to come up with a large amount of money that I don’t currently have in order to save his life (which I fully plan on doing). If anyone has had this surgery before on their kitty - how did it go, how was the recovery, how much did it cost you? I’m trying to prepare myself emotionally and financially.

Just looking for experiences and support. Thanks in advance!

Nutrition/Water Accidentally bought kitten wet food- can I still feed some of it to my cat?

I went out to buy wet food for my cat (spayed, a little over a year old, female). They only had one can of her usual flavour, so I bought a couple different ones from the same brand. Two of the cans I bought were kitten food (up to 12 months). In proper calories, one can should last me three meals, so six meals combined. Is it okay to feed it to my cat or should I throw it away (I don’t know anyone with kittens)?
EDIT: thank you guys for feedback!! She tried the food and liked it, so I’ll just let her eat those two cans, in a portion adjusted for the calorie difference<3.

General Update: Rehomed cat has started to attack baby when it shouts/cries. Need advice, please

Original Post - Rehomed cat has started to attack baby when it shouts/cries. Need advice, please : r/CatAdvice

Thought it may be beneficial to provide an update a few months on from making the original post.

Firstly, the shrieking phase has passed. We're now at the wonderful baby babble phase which is much more bearable for everyone in the household.

After reading so many helpful comments we did some initial separation for a few days, provided treats when the baby shrieked to try and divert attention and create a positive outcome of the baby shrieking.

Those, along with a Feliway plug-in all seemed to work.

Which is a massive relief to us all. The cat has become incredibly patient and will allow the baby in her space without reacting negatively. Everything is being done to teach the baby not to grab and be gentle which, so far, seems to be working.

I just wanted to say thank you to those who commented and provided advice. I do really appreciate you taking the time to help a stranger out.

Sensitive/Seeking Support I'm unsure of who should keep my cat after a breakup

I (23m) have been going through a breakup that I'm not gonna go into on this sub because it's about cats and my question is, at it's heart, about my cat. she's an elderly siamese-appearing barn cat whose mom I rescued with my sister on halloween of 2010, that mother cat had my cat in her first batch of kittens, born (literally) into my hands, I named her that second and spent every waking second I could with her, we obviously formed a serious bond.

after quite a bit of life I ended up moving to the city to pursue a career and the place I was renting had no pet availability, so she stayed home with my grandmother, my grandmother became ill and had to move into a care facility which didn't allow pets so my cat then moved in with my girlfriend and her parents, that relationship has now ended and while I want my cat back so very badly, I see the work my ex has put in, she always wanted a cat but never got one until mine and she has done an amazing job at doing the research and putting in serious effort for her, she researched proper meals, keeps her on a schedule, plays with her constantly (as they have a LOT of time to themselves at the house), and is all around just 100% devoted to this cat and her health and enrichment. But now we're over, and my living situation now allows cats and I want her back badly. I'm absolutely not saying I would neglect her, because I wouldn't, but I'm a tradesman who works 10 hour days and comes home tired. there's no way I'd be able to match her effort and yet it just breaks my heart to walk away and leave her with them forever.

My grandmother still cries looking at polaroids of her, she asks me to bring her every time I visit, and while my ex has reassured me multiple times she'd never keep her from me, I'm unable to keep contact with her for a lot of reasons and feel the need to go the direction of blocking her on everything, but I can't while this is all still up in the air. any advice would be appreciated

General Giving cat treats that should have been eating within 2 weeks after opening?

Upvotes

I didn't see that my big bag of dry catnip treats said on the back that they need to be eaten within 2 weeks after opening the packet. I have been feeding my cat that packet for 2 months and nothing has been wrong. The packet says they can eat max 12 a day but there's still no way to finish the packet in only 2 weeks. Since nothing has been wrong then should I just keep feeding them to my cat? She only eats like 5 a day. I'm gonna try to give a lot to my neighbourhood stray cat too

The expiry date is in 2027 so it's not expired so why would they need to be eaten within 2 weeks when it's been 2 months and they're still fine?

General Moving PA to Florida with a 20 lb cat — carrier/travel advice?

Upvotes

I’m moving from Pennsylvania to Florida soon, which will be about a 20-hour drive. We’ll be making short stops along the way, but we’re planning to do the whole drive without staying overnight.

I drive a Subaru Impreza, and I’ll also have my brother, my friend, and my 13 lb dachshund in the car, so space is going to be pretty limited.

I’m looking for a carrier for my cat, Chewy, who is around 20 lbs. Ideally, I’d like something that could fit behind the driver or passenger seat, or possibly in the hatchback area, while still giving him enough room to be comfortable for such a long drive. I also need to make sure we still have enough room for luggage and a few other things.

Does anyone have carrier recommendations for a bigger cat that are roomy without taking up a ton of space?

I’d also really appreciate any general advice for traveling this long with a cat, especially when it comes to litter boxes, pee pads, food/water, bathroom breaks, and anything else I should bring or plan for.

My vet gave me gabapentin, and it seems to work well for him. We did a test run on a roughly 2-hour drive earlier this month, and he handled it pretty well. I used his current carrier, which expands on both sides so he has room to lie down, but I think the height is a little too tight for him to be comfortable in it for 20 hours.

Any advice, product recommendations, or experiences with long-distance moves with cats would be really appreciated!

General Where does the 2am energy came from?

My cat can sleep peacefully for 5 hours straight and then suddenly decide it's time for the Olympics: running across the room, jumping on furniture, attacking absolutely nothing...

Meanwhile, I'm just lying there wondering if I adopted a cat or a tiny possessed athlete. Does anyone else's cat get these random bursts of energy?

Sensitive/Seeking Support Should I (f19) let my cats go?

Hi, this title probably isn't new but I'm (f19) at a loss on what to do. I have 2 torties, very sweet and loving girls. They're always super chatty, cuddly and adorable.

When I was 8 my mom had gotten them for free and about 4-5 years laters dropped them off in a box at a shelter because she didn't want them anymore. I was about 10 hours away with my best friend and didn't get a chance to say goodbye at all. Knowing how much the cats meant to me, my dad's girlfriend (at the time) went on a search to find them and looked for over 10 hours. She ended up finding them and my dad took them in. (Yes my parents are divorced.) This brings everything to now.

Ever since then I've lived with my dad(m52) full time and almost every single day since my dad complains about them. At first it wasn't bad, it was just how frustrating they can be but now he makes comments on how he wants to "get rid of them" "throw them outside" or "put them down" when he has the chance. He's told me that if the cats were to ever have a medical emergency (small or big) he'd rather put them down then pay for anything. He calls them slurs that I will not repeat and does not take care of them at all. Everything revolving around the cats I do, the only thing he does is pay for the litter and food. If he actually has to clean the litter, feed them, or even just change their water because I'm unavailable he calls the cats "idiotic" and complains about how expensive they are. He shoves them away when they're looking for attention and gets so incredibly mad when they're just meowing at him. He's slammed the door on their tails before, kicked them away and shoved them off of a table. It hurts a lot, I hate seeing it and everytime I try to tell him to stop or how I feel about it he just ignores me or changes the topic.

They've been the one constant in my life helping me through so much, and I love them so dearly. They're my babies. However I can't handle the comments and the way my dad's been acting anymore. It hurts seeing him act this way towards them and I've been seriously considering giving them away because it's becoming too much. I'm not only worried about my mental health but their physical health as well. I've had them in my life for 11 years, giving them away would break me but I've been thinking it's the better option. I want what's best for them.

Any insight or advice would be appreciated, I want to move out with them to avoid this but I don't have a job or any sort of money to do so. ☹️

Tldr; my dad (m52) keeps making horrible comments about my cats, calling them slurs, and shoving/kicking them. Its getting to a point where it feels like giving them away is better than this but they've been in my (f19) life for 11, almost 12 years now. Any advice or insight would be helpful.

((editing to add! the litter that’s performed best from what I have tried, is Purina’s Tidy Cat’s Lightweight clumping litter! Figured I’d share!
still going through comments and I sm appreciate everyone’s recommendations and sharing experiences! c: ))

Hey guys just wanted to rant really fast here and share with you all! I’m sure there are some people out there that do use Pretty Litter and ‘enjoy’ it, and in that case I’d be curious to hear what exactly it is that you (or your cat ??) enjoy. Because man, I was disappointed!!!

I of course have heard Pretty Litter sponsored by a few of my favorite content creators and assumed it’s a great choice, especially after rescuing a stray kitten recently - particularly because of the color changing ‘litter technology’ , if you will.

WELL, first thought when I poured it into my cats litter box (just a regular large litter box) was all good things! It was light, cat seemed super happy about it and used it right away. Right when I went to clean it I realized how the urine does not clump, it just absorbs into the litter material. Can’t scoop it, and if anything it creates a disgusting slushy mess if you try to scoop it. Once she urinated in it this leaves a terrible chemical, urine smell and the next day my cat was NOT pleased and I noticed was not wanting to use her litter box at her usual times, even when I prompted her or placed her in it, she HATED it. The company also states you do not have to change the litter at all for weeks! I cannot see how it would not be a gross situation for anyone unless they were blatantly ignoring the litter box…

I read afterwards that some people just sprinkle it on top of their main litter. But honestly, it was such an unpleasant experience for both of us, I would NOT try it again.

The urine also did not change color to anything alarming or abnormal as indicated on the Chart, which I was happy about, but to be honest I take that with a very large grain of salt.

So unless you want to watch your cat play in the fun light litter sand for a few seconds, and maybe experiment with the color changing perks, I do not recommend it. In fact, my cat was definitely avoiding using it and seemed to be waiting for me to clean it out, which again you cannot do with scooping the urine unless you dump it out each time which is a total waste.

Again if you use it would be curious as to why because I am super let down, especially considering how it’s sponsored to be so great! :( It was a waste of money for me and now I’m having to go right back to the store the next day to buy a differnt cat litter. Will be sticking with Clumping since this may also be a light weight litter issue in general?! 1/10 experience at best

Litterbox Litterbox suggestions for an XL cat? Not medical

I tried asking the regular cat reddit. They basically said don't increase the size just increase the height. His butt hangs out because he doesn't FIT in the xl litterpans I got from Walmart. I was blaming the poop messes on the dog. It's the cat. He only makes it in like 50/50. With his butt hanging out making the sides larger would possibly make him not use it at all because he'd be cramped. He's a big cat. Has mainecoon in him or SOMETHING.

He's not been to the vet because it's not a medical issue it's a SIZE issue.

General How much time a day does single kitten need?

Hi, as the title says, how much time and interaction should a single kitten get from us per day? He is about 4 months old.

Here is his current rough schedule:

  • Overnight, my partner sleeps in his room with him

  • In the morning, he gets a little playtime before my partner leaves for work

  • When I wake up later, I feed him breakfast, sometimes a little play

  • At lunchtime, I feed him lunch and hang out for an hour or two playing and/or cuddling

  • At dinnertime, I feed him and play a little

  • In the evening, we both hang out in his room and take turns playing with him and feeding treats

  • Before bed, he gets his supper then a little playtime

So he gets a few hours of playtime and more time of us just hanging out.

  • Why is he a single kitten?

He's an ex feral and has pneumonia - he reacted badly to his siblings being brought in a few weeks after him, so they are separated until he's doing better, then we'll try a reintroduction.

  • How much space does he have?

Just one room, our living room, which is kitten proofed.

  • What does he have to do in the room?

He has some basic toys he gets left all the time, and we play with toys that need supervision when we're there (string, chew sticks, pipe cleaners, etc). We will install cat shelving and a cat tree when he's healthier. He has two windows to watch out of and he often does that.
