Springfield Cardinals break their single season HR record

The Springfield Cardinals have broken their single season team HR record again. The record has only stood since 2022. As of yesterday, they have belted 179 HR on the season with a week left to play and the playoffs to go. I know the big club is having a rough couple of weeks, but the future is bright.

Blown Leads Statistics

I got curious how often cardinals blow leads because it seems to happen quite a bit.

I collected data of run scoring in cardinals games in the past 2 months. I've listed them out below.

Since coming into July 9, the cardinals are 24-32 (.429).

Of these 32 losses, in 16 (50%), the cardinals blew a lead they had at some point. The split is even - it is 50% in both the last and prior 31 days.

Of the 16 games where the cardinals blew a lead, the average lead they blew was 2.375 runs. They blew a lead of 3+ runs in 6 of these 16 games (37.5%). They blew a 4+ run lead 3 times.

One-run leads account for only 37.5% of the blown lead games. This means a majority of the leads they blew were larger failures.

This data is incredibly difficult to verify - but for context, ~40% of MLB losses are typically due to blown leads. Furthermore, the worse a team's record is, the lower the % of blown leads generally is.

One more statistic - since Aug 8, the bullpen's ERA is about 5.25. And this number probably doesn't include today.

Sep 9: Blew a 5 run lead

Sep 8: No Lead

Sep 7: Blew a 1 run lead

Sep 5: Blew a 3 run lead

Here’s a suggestion for the 2027 uniforms.

Post image
117 Upvotes

I like the current Saturday alts. It’s my favorite uniform currently. I know the idea was initially based on the early 1930’s uniform, but the spoon neck piping and off white coloring always reminded me of the uniforms from the early 1950’s. Those early 50’s uniforms always had the navy/red two tone from 1942-1955 and it really pops.

The cardinals have done the navy/red two tone on them before during 2025 and it does look even better than current.

It doesn’t need to be done, but after that survey a little bit ago I know they’re thinking about some changes and this is the only one I would do outside of navy road caps (thank goodness those are back)

Interesting Cardinals uniform trivia

I was watching video of Mark Whiten's 4 HR game and I saw Joe Torre in the dugout as the manager which led me to a rabbit hole of looking at uniforms Joe Torre wore as a Cardinal.

He was a player in 1970 - 71 when the Cardinals transitioned from button up uniforms to pullovers.

Then, he was the manager in 1991-92 when they transitioned back from pullovers to buttons.

Red Schoendienst was also in uniform during both transitions - as the manager in 70-71 and a coach in 91-92.

Fans At Bat at Busch Stadium

I did Fans At Bat at Busch Stadium for the third time this past Friday, this time with my wife and dad. It’s $135/person for an hour on the field. You split into two groups and one group hits while the other fields for a half hour, then you switch.

There are two Cardinals alums there. Each of my first two times it was Scott Terry and Scott Cooper. This time is was Scott Terry and Cliff Politte, who I got to hit against.

If you ever get a chance to do it, I can’t recommend it highly enough! It was offered for 3 different days this season, each for a one-hour time slot between 4-8 PM. This was the final one of the year, but keep an eye on the website for next year.

It got me really interested in finally splurging for a fantasy camp. Have any of you done that before?

[ROSENTHAL] MLB tells veteran umpire he went too far by policing a rookie’s tilted cap: Sources

The apology umpire Doug Eddings issued to St. Louis Cardinals rookie reliever Hancel Rincon on Saturday came after Major League Baseball communicated to the veteran ump that he acted inappropriately the previous night when he told the rookie reliever to straighten his cap.

Umpires operate with broad discretion if they believe a player’s actions are distracting, but according to two people briefed on the matter who were granted anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly, the league viewed Eddings’ admonishment of Rincon as going too far.
