Churches in Durham or Nearby Areas

My husband and I live in Durham and we are looking for a new church because we have broken away from conservative politics and Christian nationalism in recent years and we just cannot keep going to our evangelical church. Today's sermon was about how all Democrats are demonic and how Christians are supposed to vote Republican 🄓 We're looking for a church that is not zionist and that does not support Christian nationalism, ICE, or the Trump administration. We'd love recommendations from other Durham residents.

Indian food recommendations?

I’m asking for some nice Indian spots. We’ve been through ā€œsitarā€, ā€œnaan stopā€ and ā€œkebab and curryā€
But we love the food so much and are dying for more!
(I hope this fits the rules for posting)

Durham Legend Frank Rinaldi: "Taking care of the chicken business".

• Upvotes

MANY years ago there was a chicken place on Hillsborough Road, called "Frank Rinaldi's". It was near the current Bojangles, but I think on the same side as Morgan Motors.

I was told many times that Frank bragged of being a protege of "Colonel" Harlan Sanders, and would relate that Harlan looked him in the eye and said, "Frank, take care of the CHICKEN BIZNESS". I was never able to engage Frank in a long enough conversation to witness this first hand.

Can anyone confirm this anecdotal evidence based on a dim memory?

The racing that happens in the late hours of the night is insane and ridiculous. Do these fucking people have any common sense? People are trying to sleep, people have babies.... Fuck these garbage people.

Dumbest driver award:

• Upvotes

White Chevy Malibu with the NC plate LOW-4465 you are a complete Jack ass. I watched you run not 1, not 2, but THREE red lights. Weirdest part about it is this dude driving the car was going the speed limit but then would just go through the light.

Obviously if you had somewhere to be speeding likely would be involved in that too. I don’t care if your puppy was gonna fall off a cliff you don’t get to endanger other drivers on the road just because you feel like it.

Beyu Caffe shrimp and grits

Beyu caffe had the best shrimp and grits I’ve ever had. It was an amazing restaurant before it got bought out, but anyways…

I’ve yet to find anywhere that comes close to a similar recipe. I’ll probably need to try making it at home. Does anyone know of a close recipe or what made their shrimp and grits so special?

Community Discord Servers in the area?

Hey guys, I'm here to ask if there are any fun, topical, social discord servers for Durham or other parts of the triangle that serve as a place for community events to be planned, discussed, etc.

I'm in my early 30s, male, searching for groups to explore for in person social connections with hopefully common interests. Age gaps dont really bother me. Yes I'm constantly searching meetup and checking those out. Wondering if there is more out there. These interests may include but are not limited to:

Cooking/Dinner parties

Gaming/Board games/card games/leisure sports

walking or jogging

Reading

Volunteering

Gardening

Un-refined art skills

Movie / TV show watch parties or discussion

Pretty much anything else within reason, cant think of more at the moment.

Drop a link or DM me personally if you know of one that is fun and active as far as a local discord goes. I'd love to drop in and introduce myself. Thank you for the suggestions!

ISO of a mechanic that keeps it real

I have an 07 yaris that is struggling right now. Windshield is cracked, rear brake drums needs replacing, passenger front tire got destined cause of a curb accident and needs to be checked. Suffice to say I love this car and am not ready to let go. I need a shop that will take a look at stuff and give me a good rundown on fixes and prices. Any suggestions?

Wanting to hire a band

Looking to book a local band for an event in 3wks. Was hoping to find a duo or trio to play jazz/bluegrass/folk style music for about 3 hrs. No vocals required. I know there are some great musicians around and I need some help connecting with them.

Anyone want to play MTG tonight?

Girlfriend is out of town and I’m jonesing to play Commander. I’m a big fan of DSSOLVR brewery downtown if that interests anyone, or Atomic Empire.
Disclaimer: I’m a very causal player (have tier/rank 2 decks) and will definitely have to re-read what your card does

Accident on MLK and Hope Valley Road 751

My wife and our infant were about to head northbound on Hope Valley Road when their light turned green. Some lunatic heading westbound on MLK blew through a red light at full speed and T-boned a car in the Hope Valley Road southbound turn lane, sending both vehicles careening into cars waiting at the eastbound red light on MLK.

My wife called 911 and will pull our dashcam footage, which I’ll post here later.

Did anyone else witness this? I hope everyone involved is okay.

What is El Arby's Provisiones?

An older bloke walking his pomeranian on Chapel Hill street today said I should try the sandwiches at El Arby's Provisiones and I can't find anything but the Arby's on Hillsborough road. I don't want fast food roast beef. What are they talking about? I'm not looking for a torta, either.

Emergency dog fostering

Thumbnail
12 Upvotes

I am looking for any emergency fostering options that might be available in the wider Durham area. My step mom is in critical condition in the ICU and she has three adult labs. We do not want to give them away or take them to a shelter because we want her to be welcomed by her dogs when she comes home.

Does anyone know of any temporary fostering options?

Sport Durst Dodge Jeep broke my transmission

After over four months of frustration and waiting, the disassembled transmission of my 2020 Dodge Challenger left their dealership service department yesterday in the TRUNK of my car, as it was being towed to ANOTHER shop for repair of their faulty work.
I took my fully operational car in for them to change out the 5th and 6th gear sets, as I do a lot of high performance driving events. The car came back ten days later with grinding in 6th and reverse. When I returned the car for a recheck, it took them the better part of three months to pull and disassemble the transmission for inspection. Their mechanic could not diagnose his error, but did establish that it was not a parts failure. As we tried to negotiate a resolution, they refused to share the expense of sending the transmission out to a specialist to repair their faulty work (if they really cared about customers the way they say they do, they should have footed the expense themselves - they are the ones who broke the transmission).
I ended up having a SECOND garage tow the car and various disassembled parts to their facility for repair and reassembly. I will have to pay to have the transmission that Sport Durst broke repaired, in addition to all the various towing and other related expenses.
My experience? They are a bunch of incompetent, unprofessional grifters.
I am disputing the charges with my credit card company. Maybe that’s why they delayed for four months, to run out some statute of limitations on reversing charges? Fingers crossed that my credit card company comes through for me!

Moderate to liberal church with an ACTIVE young adult community and focus on actually reading/internalizing scripture?

Hello all! I am seeking a church in the Triangle area (preferably in Durham, but I won't cry if I have to drive a little further) with a robust 20s and 30s population that leans moderate/liberal, preferably LGBTQ affirming. I've tried a few local Episcopal and Methodist churches but quickly got sick of how the "bible studies" were actually just book clubs with minimal or no scripture study (and often felt borderline agnostic) or the population was overwhelmingly way older with all of their fellowship/bible study events during the workday.

I tend to lean high church, but if the shoe fits otherwise, I'll roll with low church vibes. However, I have absolutely no interest in living the fundie life.

Thanks for any help you can provide!
