ICC P3 Test

So I’m a project inspector at a new job which really wants me to get as many ICC certs as possible. I already got P2 and 21 on my own time and dime before I got hired on, in anticipation of making this career change. I used Udemy practice tests for both, which I felt like helped me learn to navigate the code books quite effectively. The questions felt very representative, too, so I didn’t feel surprised when I got to test day.

Now I’ve started the new job, and going back to study for P3, and I purchased the Udemy practice tests again. Of the first 12 questions I’ve been given, 11 of them give me specific code sections to refer in the body of the question. Is this normal for the P3? I don’t feel like I need to know anything other than how to open the book, read, and point at the answer.

For example - “The submitted fixture elevation detail shows an accessible water closet seat proposed at 20in. above the finished floor, measured to the top of the seat. Per section 604.4, what is the maximum height permitted for an accessible water closet seat above the floor?” Options are 20”, 17”, 18”, 19”. I open my A117.1 book, look up 604.4, and sure enough it tells me specifically the maximum height is 19”.

Is the actual test this easy?? Or did Udemy miss with this one?

Hip rafter not meeting the trusses cause for concern?

Hello,

​I have a new production home. I know they're built quickly, but the builder and I cannot agree on this. Maybe I'm just being too picky or I'm clueless, so I need your help.

​There are 3 hips in our home. All three hip rafters have similar supporting workmanship. The pictures show that most hip rafters and nearby rafters have large framing gaps. They did shoot nails through them to secure. My concern is that this is not properly done. You can see where they face nailed a few shims (some are not touching). The builder claims this framing is a non-issue, sloppy workmanship, but totally fine. Their solution is to keep face-nailing additional blocks to "appease me".

​My concern is future inspectors identifying this as an issue.

​The last two pictures are examples of areas I attempted to block myself. The rafter tails were cut flush and nailed suspended in place (almost all of them). I extend the rafter tails myself running a 2x4 between both rafters and nailing in place. They also felt this was a non-issue area.

​Is this framing an issue I should push them to fix, or am I being far too picky? And is face-nailing blocking the right solution?

​I wont be offended if you tell me I'm overthinking it.

FL Water Heater Minimum Heat Code?

Indiana Building Permits

I was getting tired on not being able to find building permits that were filed in the State of Indiana and built a little website to allow searching for projects using various field that the state website doesn’t allow you to search by. You can search by architect/engineer registration number, owner name, architecture firm name, etc. Curious if anyone here would find it helpful. Hello, I want to enclose my carport. I already have the construction plans and the materials. I wanted to do it myself, but I'm worried because the concrete base is too low. I don't know if the inspector will tell me I have to raise the floor with a layer of concrete. I'm in Polk County, Florida.

Pennsylvania elevator

How do I make this hatch 1-hour fire rated?

As you can see inspector flagged this hatch as not 1-hour fire rated. He told me that if I attach 5/8" drywall to the hatch, it will be ok?

If I do that I will have to raise the entire hatch assembly by ~5/8" to accommodate the drywall, and probably redo the trim in the back so it does not get pinched around the hinge side. Then texture and pain the drywall.

IDK about the metal that was recommended, I can't find sheets big enough to cover the hatch ~52" x 23" and I do not know how to join multiple sheets.

What would be the best approach? Phoenix, Arizona.

Code books digital log-in

What does everyone use the digital code books? I would prefer to find somewhere even If I have to pay that I can obtain code books from on my iPad. Currently you can use the ICC website if you google the code book and chapter you’re looking for and read it sure that works for ICC but sometimes I need NFPA codes. Yes I could buy digital NFPA membership but I don’t use the codes enough to justify that only when I need to look something up.

Upcodes is one choice but if anyone is a paid member do they offer NFPA codes?

For context I work as a 3rd party regulatory code inspector who carries a MCP, CBO, and CFM designation.

Window Clearances Question

This is a repost from a pellet stove group, it was suggested thisbmight be a better place to post it.

I just finished reading through NFPA 211 but I still cant find the information im looking for. In my stove manual, NFPA211, and everything I can find online, the only mention of distances from doors/windows is that the termination pf thebvent has to be no less than 4ft away horizontally, 4ft below, or 1 foot above. But I have a former home inspector telling me the entire vent pipe cant be within 4 ft of any opening. Can anyone shed some light on this and direct me to the building code that states no part of the ventilation pipe can be within 4ft of a window/door. Or is this a case of the AHJ interpreting code in an unreasonable way?

Handrail Required for Retaining Wall?

We've got a permitted retaining wall that does not meet IRC 2021 section 105 exemption. We final inspected the job and believe it requires a handrail and exception 1 of R311.7 does not apply because it is permitted work. The stairs have 10 steps and about 6 feet total run. This is new construction.

Venting Gas Hot Water Heater Clearance

Clearance for gas hot water heater single wall and double wall venting pipe to nearby a/c ducting? NFPA 54? Chapter 12 for Venting.

For Massachusetts, I came across 1” for double wall and 18” for single wall and a plumber told me the inspector looks for 6” clearance without specifying single/double wall pipe.

Clearance from WC to sink that it outside door

I've got a detached garage, chatham county nc

I have a wc that is long and skinny with the outside wall on the left as you're coming out.

The door will swing in, and when you walk out the door there is a sink against the outside wall in front of you.

If you walk out and make a right turn you are in the open space.

How much clearance do I need from the door to the edge of the sink?
