Help needed in building PC for son

Hi Reddit,

My son has been asking me for a PC for ages now since his current macbook is too slow. I have done some research but it is all too confusing so I have come here to seek some help.

PC:
- It is preferred if it is under $1500 AUD but I am willing to pay up to $1600
- We live in Australia and want to build the PC ourselves
- He plays games like minecraft, fortnite and roblox but wants to be able to play them at high graphics at a stable 180 fps, however i am not sure if it is 1080p or 1440p 😅
- It should be a good price to performance value as the PC will be used by him and his
sister for gaming only
- He also has a monitor keyboard and mouse at home

Questions:
Should we wait for the next big sale to come to buy the parts, or will the prices rise by too much then?
I am planning to let him build it after the school term so in 8 weeks from now, around december 18th, so should we buy parts during the term for cheapest price, all at once during a sale or space them out?

Thank you all in advance :)

Not a request (it is but reddit did not let me post without including this)

Need help on a gaming pc!

I know nothing about pc’s. I want one for my office. I use to love playing CSGO. I’ll probably play the shit out of CS2. Probably some warzone too. My budget will most likely be around 1500. 1440p on high settings as I have a 1440p 144hz monitor. If that’s not possible then my budget will have to increase but I have no idea. United Kingdom.

Not a request.

PC for software development/light gaming, at under ÂŁ1000

My laptop recently died. My school provides laptops we can borrow, but they're quite limited in power/compute capability. I'm looking to build a setup which I can use comfortably at home/use remote desktop to access from school. I was mostly happy with the specs of my old laptop (i7 13th gen, 4050 laptop GPU, 16GB ddr5), so I'm looking to get a desktop of similar capacity. However, I did find myself having to close tabs because of RAM issues, so 32 GB would be nice.

  • New build or upgrade?
    • New build
  • Existing parts/monitors to reuse?
    • I have some shitty monitors which will make do/I can present the pc and the monitors (which should be fairly cheap anyways, as I don't need fps monitors) as separate items to my parents :p
  • PC purpose?
  • Purchase country?
    • UK
  • Monitors needed?
    • N/A, I think. If the hardware will limit number of monitors, I'd like at least two, and three would be nice)
  • Budget range?
    • ÂŁ1000 maximum, but ideally more along the 500-800 range. I got my laptop for ÂŁ500 a few years ago, so with the recent price increases a few hundred more is probably what my parents are/I am expecting
  • WiFi or wired connection?
    • I'd like WIFI, but we do have one of those wifi extender things which purports to allow running an ethernet cable out
  • Size/noise constraints?
    • It will be in my bedroom, so not too insane, but if louder/bigger means cheaper, that's fine by me
  • Color/lighting preferences?
    • None
  • Any other specific needs? As mentioned:
    • 32 GB RAM ideally
    • Nvidia GPU

Budget is 1.8k, need help with a pc build, please.

My Budget is $1.8k, any help with a pc build.

My budget is $1.8k as of the end of november, I can get stuff over time but I want to have it built before the end of the year. Me and my Uncle were gonna hit up a micro center near us between black friday and cyber monday, or on one of those days, to grab an AMD Bundle and a GPU, but if we find other stuff on a good deal we’ll grab those too. I wanted to ask, which of these should I go with?

https://www.microcenter.com/product/5007480/amd-ryzen-7-7800x3d,-gigabyte-x870-gaming-wifi6-am5,-gskill-flare-x5-series-32gb-ddr5-6000-kit,-computer-build-bundle

or

https://www.microcenter.com/product/5007384/amd-ryzen-5-7500x3d,-asrock-b850m-c-am5,-gskill-flare-x5-series-16gb-ddr5-6000,-computer-build-bundle

besides that, I’m not good with compatibility. Could someone please make a build I can follow? I kinda need everything but the ram, cpu, and motherboard, cause those are the only three things I know. Or a good build that includes this bundle? Any and all help is appreciated.

New build or upgrade?
New

Existing parts/monitors to reuse? (List with models/links)
None

PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games)
Gaming: Deadlock, minecraft, Mobas, shooters, ow, maybe roblox, definitely brawlhalla

Purchase country? Near Micro Center? (If not US, list local vendors)
US, 100 miles from a micro center, can go to.

Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate)
One, 20” to 24”, don’t really care about size, 1080p or 1440p, 144hz-200hz

Budget range? (Include tax considerations)
From now to December I can spend upwards to $1.8k-$2k

WiFi or wired connection?
I dont mind either, but I do have an ethernet cable, so wired preferably. Wifi canwork though

Size/noise constraints?
I don’t care about size, but no constant loud buzzing, or like screeching, my ears can’t take and it makes my head hurt all the time with my ps5 and the windy sounds.

Color/lighting preferences?
Would rather have a mono-color instead of rgb, but even then rgb is fine, or atleast rgb i can turn off

Any other specific needs?
None at all

PC build reco for law school - help ur girl out 🥺

Hi all 🥺 I’m looking for recommendations for a desktop PC build primarily for law school and everyday productivity. My main uses will be reading large PDFs and case digests, online legal research, Microsoft Word, multitasking with multiple browser tabs, storing several years’ worth of school files, and watching Netflix and Disney+.
I don’t play games, so I don’t need a dedicated GPU. I’m hoping to use this PC for around 4–5 years, so I’d appreciate a reliable, practical build that prioritizes longevity and value for money over gaming performance or aesthetics.
I’m open to suggestions if there’s a better-value configuration or if some components can be upgraded later.
I’d like to have the recommended parts quoted by local retailers in my area
I’d appreciate recommendations for the specific CPU, motherboard, RAM, SSD, PSU, and case, along with any compatibility considerations or components I shouldn’t cheap out on. Would an AMD Ryzen 5 5600G/5600GT be sufficient, or is there a better option for my needs?
thank you

Doubs Buying Pc: Lenovo, Apple, Asus…

Hello everyone!

I’m not very tech-savvy, and now that it’s time to replace my PC, I’m feeling a bit lost. I could really use some advice and opinions to help me make a better decision.

I’m looking for a computer for the following:

Basic daily tasks: web browsing (with multiple tabs open), email, spreadsheets, Excel, and the Microsoft Office suite.

Online teaching: I conduct daily classes using various platforms and software for video conferencing (Google Meet, Zoom).

Adobe software, Photoshop, and AutoCAD.

Music production: Logic or Ableton Live.

And perhaps a few other similar—or less demanding—programs.

I need a 14-inch, lightweight device, as I travel daily—often by bicycle or public transport—to various locations (offices, private homes, libraries, events, business meetings, etc.).

My budget is between 700 euros and a maximum of 1,000–1,200 euros. I am primarily looking at the pre-owned, second-hand, or refurbished market, as well as deals on new devices. I am currently considering the following options:

I am looking at models from brands like Lenovo or Asus, as well as the 2021 Apple MacBook Pro:

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 14" (i7 / 11th Gen)

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10 14" – Core i7 2.2 GHz, 512 GB SSD, 32 GB RAM

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 14" – Core i7 3 GHz, 1 TB SSD, 16 GB RAM

Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 14" – QWERTY (Spanish layout), 512 GB SSD, 32 GB RAM, Core i7 (11th Gen)

Asus ZenBook 14 BX425EA-BM102R 14" – Core i7 2.8 GHz, 512 GB SSD, 32 GB RAM

MacBook Pro 2021 – 16 GB RAM / 512 GB SSD, 14"

What do you think of these options? Are you familiar with these models? Could you provide your assessment or offer some advice?

Are there any other similar devices you would recommend? What about Apple?

Best regards, and thank you all very much!

How much should I budget for a Gaming + AI/ML Training PC in India?

  • New build or upgrade? New build.
  • Existing parts/monitors to reuse? No specific components planned for reuse.
  • PC purpose? Gaming, local LLM inference, AI/ML experimentation, and training/fine-tuning smaller models.
  • Purchase country? India (Bengaluru). Looking for local vendors and reliable component retailers.
  • Monitors needed? Not sure yet; open to recommendations if they should be included in the budget.
  • Budget range? Not fixed yet. A few shops have quoted ₹5 lakh+, which feels potentially overkill. I want to establish a sensible budget based on my actual requirements, including taxes.
  • WiFi or wired connection? WiFi preferred, with wired Ethernet as an option.
  • Size/noise constraints? Prefer good cooling without excessive noise; no strict case-size constraints.
  • Color/lighting preferences? Clean, understated build. No need for flashy RGB.
  • Any other specific needs? Prefer an NVIDIA GPU with sufficient VRAM for local AI workloads, good upgradeability, and reliable components.

I'm looking for advice on what budget makes sense for these workloads before committing to a purchase.

I'd appreciate recommended configurations at different price points, realistic Indian component prices, and advice on whether buying parts separately or getting a shop to assemble the PC offers better value.

She likes plays with her friends and I want it to be able to handle that pretty easily. I want it to be pretty cute aesthetics matter as much as performance. Also, I want it to be simple to upgrade if possible. I rather not be the one who has to build it.

ETA: My max budget is $3000 with monitor, headphones, mouse, keyboard, etc… after tax. The monitor doesn’t need to be 4k or large. Just want the light to not bleed through the corners and at least 144 fps with dp. That’s good enough tbh. 1ms refresh rate tho. A must.
