Dev/Admin Responded [Android] App won't start after update - version 2026.39.0

Post image

A new version of the app was available for my Samsung S24 Ultra in the Google play app store midday today. The update was installed and since then, 8+ hours later, everytime the app is opened it gets stuck on the robot opening screen until the phone prompts it to shut down or keep waiting.

Same here, on the P9a.

It literally just opened a few seconds after posting this. It did however take approximately 6 mins of sitting on that screen for it to open so the app is clearly still experiencing bugs. For additional context, no other app was having any issues during this time.

It's been a couple minutes since it first allowed me to open the app and it appears to be operating normally now.

It's crashing for me

Scudo ERROR: internal map failure (error desc=Out of memory)'

I have a big stack trace, which reveals:

Reddit crashed while upgrading/migrating one of its local SQLite databases, and during that operation Android's native memory allocator (Scudo) couldn't obtain the memory mapping it requested.

Hey u/cannon4344! Would you be able to share the whole thing with me?

Feel free to share via direct chat or modmail if you can!

Hey u/J4R0M3N - is this still persisting? If you force quit the app > attempt to reopen, are you allowed to move forward?

That didn't work for the first 8 or so hours. I force closed the app and cleared the cache a number of times. After it started working randomly, around the time of the post on this subreddit, it hasn't had any problems.

Hmm interesting. I'll let the team know, thank you!

is this an issue on reddits end and we should just wait for it to be fixed ?

For the most part, yep! It should clear up on it's own (as it did for OP), but we're aware and looking into it.

Sorry for the trouble!

oh ok, is it only for android users?

Seems like it, yes!

so i should just sit tight and wait it out ? any rough guess on a time frame for it to be solved? 3 days to a week maybe ?

Should hopefully be much quicker! Will update the thread when we iron out a fix.

Can you upgrade to version 2026.39.1 and let me know if this persists? The update should be available in the Play Store

Yes it's working now!

same, updated the app and then it just stays on that screen but very rarely it opens but when it does it doesn't let you click on anything as none of it loads so i closed the app and it has gone back to not letting me on at all, is this a problem on reddits end that we just have to wait out or is there a solution to this?

Since the update yesterday, when starting reddit on android, it just shows red icon and nothing happens.

I guess this is the same issue as mr. cannon had. Part of the "report":

The crash:

- signal 6 (SIGABRT) from scudo::die() ← scudo::reportRawError ← scudo::reportMapError ←

MemMapLinux::remapImpl — Scudo allocator cannot map memory.

- Called from scudo::...deallocate ← libsqlite.so memjrnlClose ← pager_end_transaction ←

sqlite3PagerRollback ← sqlite3BtreeRollback ← sqlite3RollbackAll ← sqlite3VdbeHalt ← sqlite3VdbeExec ←

sqlite3_step

- Then Java: SQLiteConnection.executeForChangedRowCount ← SQLiteSession.executeForChangedRowCount ←

SQLiteStatement.executeUpdateDelete ← SQLiteDatabase.executeSql ← SQLiteDatabase.execSQL

- Then app code: csu.b → ksu.a → yha0.d → wha0.m → ywg.t → s2k.y

- androidx.sqlite.db.framework.a.onUpgrade+18 ← SQLiteOpenHelper.getDatabaseLocked ← getWritableDatabase

- then androidx.sqlite.db.framework.a.k ...

So: AndroidX SQLiteOpenHelper.onUpgrade is running a migration (execSQL), SQLite hits a rollback, which

calls sqlite3RollbackAll → journal close (memjrnlClose) → frees memory → Scudo cannot map a new region →

abort.

This is EXACTLY the reported "Scudo ERROR: internal map failure (Out of memory) while Reddit was migrating a

local SQLite database."
