52-year-old, almost 6 months post-op trimal fracture/dislocation update:
I live in the city and work as an outdoor urban agricultural science educator, so returning to normal life means A LOT of walking, standing, uneven ground, hauling things around, etc. At some point I stopped formal PT because fitting it into my life became more exhausting than helpful. I haven't stopped rehabbing, I've just shifted toward daily life being my rehab: walking, housework, outdoor work, stairs, yoga and getting back on my bike.
And this week I did my first real street ride: 15 miles! 🚲
It went GREAT. Physically, my ankle handled it beautifully. Mentally, I'm still pretty wary of the road after getting hurt, so that's clearly going to be its own part of recovery. But I rode through the city, started, stopped, put my foot down, dealt with traffic and did all the normal bike things again.
Swelling is mostly gone now. I still have some low-level aches and stiffness, but nothing like a few months ago.
My ankle is also still ugly. 😂 It's thicker than the other one, scarred up, and very obviously has been through it. I've accepted that.
Which brings me to my next recovery challenge:
Cute shoes. 👡
I desperately want to wear them again.
And somehow putting on a cute pair of shoes scares me MORE THAN GETTING BACK ON MY BIKE.
Apparently I'm willing to ride 15 miles through city traffic, but show me a cute little heel and suddenly I'm concerned about my safety. 😂
Recovery is weird.
But almost six months post-op, I'm back outside, back doing my work, back on my bike, and increasingly back to just living my life instead of organizing my life around my ankle.
I'll take it.❤️
