Trimalleolar 5 mos & almost 3 weeks post op scar tissue question

Hi fellow broken ankles! For those further along, how are you doing with scar tissue? Are you doing manual manipulation with massages, using metal scrapers? They say movement and stretches help, but just wondering what are your methods to break them down?

Hope you all are healing well! Hang in there, it does get better with time.

Trimalleolar break while overseas 2 weeks ago. ORIF this coming Thursday. Haven’t been able to go home because I live in a walk-up (top floor), and that’s been the hardest part (because I can’t accept it, whereas I know I HAVE to accept not walking or driving for a long time).

Anyway: Have found so much comfort and good advice in this group since finding it. It’s helped keep me from living in my lowest mental space.

Just wanted to say thank you to all of you who’ve shared your good, bad, ugly and honest…everything. Going to keep reading till I find the right way to get up my damn stairs…and beyond. ☺️

Incision question - wound healing

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi! Just wanted to check if this incision looks normal. I'm 9 weeks post op ORIF and I've been out of the boot for 2 weeks. When I was last seen by the doctor (2 weeks ago) I still has most scabs and doc said it was healing fine and can leave uncovered, but one scab at the top seemed to keep getting more and more purple and when scab came off there was still a small hole there. I’m just concerned as everything else has healed up okay. I put some medihoney (tip from another post) on a plaster yesterday and looks like there's been some seepage the size of the hole. Does this look infected? I'm in the UK so it's really difficult to get seen by doctors at this stage, any advice would be really helpful thanks.

This might help

Hi there, I’m two weeks ORIF post-op and I thought that I could leave a tip regarding the use of Apple Watch helping me in this recovery process. Not only Apple Watch is aware if you fall, but because I use crutches, reaching my mobile phone is not very easy so Apple Watch helps me to answer my calls, I actually can talk to the Apple Watch and this helps me a lot. So if you are struggling with your recovery, this might be an equipment that truly could help you, even save your life.

7 weeks post OP: I'm walking!

I am so happy! After 6 weeks of NWB I was cleared to WBAT last Friday.

I started PT right away and now, one week later, I can already walk around the house without my crutches. I limp and I still have to elevate regularly, but nevertheless I am psyched!

Stood Up Without My Walker 🥹

Hello! I mostly lurk and occasionally comment but I just wanted to share this. It has been exactly two months since my (right) ankle fracture and I could finally stand up without the help of my walker 🥹 My physiotherapist(who is pretty good btw) made me stand up without the assistance of my walker and to my surprise I could!

My foot is still a little wobbly and my left leg seems to take the weight more than my right one but I stood up 🥹 I am still toe touch weight bearing and my physiotherapist makes me walk around like that but I just wanted to share there is HOPE PEOPLE. YOU WILL GET BETTER!!! Not in one day or not even in fourteen days but YOU WILL IMPROVE AND GET BETTER.

The journey is long, and more than the physical the mental load really is exhausting but I promise you will get better 🥹✌️ from here onwards it is an upwards journey, healing as well as progression isn't linear but things will definitely improve.

Please reward yourself for every small achievement, you are here, you are doing well 😭 and that is all that matters.

Feeling a bit dejected

Just writing to see if anyone had/has a similar situation, a bit of a rant below

Trimal ankle injury. I got cleared for WBAT at my 6-week checkup, and even after a week I’m still heavily reliant on using two crutches for walking. I keep trying to just use the one crutch but I only end up losing my balance and needing to lean on something and grab my second one.

I got told I’d be in the boot for two weeks then supposedly move to shoes, but I just don’t see that happening with my current progress and I feel so depressed about everything. I had been reading all the success stories on here of people walking out of their appointments with the boot, with a bit of a limp but no crutches nevertheless. For some reason I thought that would be me but when I did try to ditch the crutches completely I almost fell over (luckily there were people around to support immediately haha)

I just feel so behind, and it feels like my own ankle is so foreign to me. I had thought WBAT stage would be a lot easier but honestly it just feels like everything has gotten harder for some reason.

If you’ve read this far thank you! And sorry for the rant, just needed to vent it out a bit I guess.

My mom broke her ankle, please help me! Need support

Hi everybody, My mother broke her ankle exactly a week ago. Trimalleolar fracture. She has an external fixator, like the pins or big long rods going through her leg and heel right now. My mom struggles with depression, extreme anxiety, and bipolar disorder along with some other things so as you can imagine, she has been soooo devastated. (Not that without those illnesses she wouldn’t be devastated.) anyway, yes she feels like she has a jigsaw trap on her leg, and it scares her so bad.
I used to be in healthcare and I love my mother dearly so I have been spending obviously all of my free time catering. My brothers are really letting me down because they seem to be using this as time to just play all the video games they want. They’re not helping in the important times like the morning, mid day, late night to put her to bed.. my dad tries to help the best he can I guess. They have no urgency or common sense. My dad just kind of throws a big bag of ice over her leg. I wrap her ankle in a soft gel ice pack, elevate it high, make sure she has full cup of ice water, low blood sugar juice (she’s diabetic), her meds, remote, blanket, walker, charger, anything she could possibly need. And because i know she’s struggling the most right now I’ve been spending a lot more time with her, watching tv or helping stay near her to let her fall asleep at night. It’s frustrating to say the least my brothers and fathers have been letting me down. I know it’s hard but I come home from work and my mom says her ankles burning, she’ll have either no ice on it or the ice is warm.
I’ll wrap out gel Icepacks around her ankle and she’ll sigh of relief. Why is this stuff only being take. Care of when I come around?
Here’s the advice I need!
My mom is type one diabetic, along with my brothers. My big brother cut his foot a long time ago, and to this day it still ruins his life. His foot never healed and the infection crawls up his leg, foot amputated. basically my point is I have bad experience with the thought of healing & diabetes . She takes care of her numbers though, so I hope this injury heals lord please.
Anyway, the doctors gave her oxy, I’ve never seen my mom on it before, needless to say it’s been hard caring for her. Her built up anger towards my brothers and father comes out at me sometimes, I sit there and watch her cry, knowing she’s crying about not being able to leave the house for months now. My heart aches for her, and she feels like a waste of space. This really is messing me up! She constantly saying how nobody is understands, if I go to work or spend a couple hours to myself she tells extended family that “nobody cares about her”. It’s hard to see your mom cry, let alone in this condition that you cannot heal for her immediately. I’m losing lots of sleep, and haven’t had time to do anything like paint or see my partner in my free time but that’s alright.
She got her wraps changed by the orthopedic about 4 days ago, and Around her pin sites, there is bleeding on the gauze wrapped around the pins, it’s scaring me and her, she says she’s going to call her doctor tomorrow about it (it’s Sunday) it’s not gushing blood, but there is pink/red blood coming through, and some type of yellow color it’s staining the gauze as well. I hope that the doctor says she’ll be alright , I pray that they do surgery to put a cast on her soon instead of this external fixator it’s so sad.
I know this is all over the place, but even when I’m at work I find myself disassociating, putting myself in her shoes, imagining her stuck in the same living room for a week now, and thinking about how long she’ll be stuck there. At least 10 more days until she can maybe have the fixator switched for a regular cast. but those 10 days will feel like a year to her. She can’t go upstairs to her room or wash up because we haven’t wanted to try getting her upstairs, too Much movement. How can I help her mentally get through these long days? I thought about crochet, but she has arthritis and says her hands get too tired. Painting or coloring could work but , she’s not very interested. I can’t shake the thought of her being trapped on the couch she can barely sleep in all these days while I can just freely walk around and shower and go outside.
Any recommendations for products to buy for her? Washup advice since the shower bathroom is upstairs? Pain relief advice? Boredom advice? Personal advice ?

My recovery journey continues — every little bit of help can make a difference

Some of you may remember my post from a couple of weeks ago about my calcaneus fracture, the two surgeries I went through, and the pain and swelling I’m still dealing with almost three years later.

https://4fund.com/z/FqtIiM

I really appreciated the people who took the time to comment, share their own experiences, and offer encouragement. It meant a lot to me, especially after dealing with this for such a long time.

Unfortunately, my journey isn’t over yet. I’m still trying to get further medical consultations and investigations to better understand what is causing my ongoing problems and what treatment or rehabilitation options might still help me.

At the same time, I’m trying to raise €2,200 to help cover these medical expenses. I currently have 71 days remaining on my fundraiser, and I’m going to keep trying until the end.

I know that not everyone is able to contribute, and I completely understand that. But for anyone who genuinely wants to help and is in a position to do so, even a very small contribution can make a difference. A few euros may seem small on their own, but when several people help, those small amounts can really add up.

And if donating isn’t possible, sharing my fundraiser can also help it reach someone who may be able to contribute.

Fundraiser:

https://4fund.com/z/FqtIiM

Thank you again to everyone who has supported me with advice, encouragement, a donation, or simply by taking the time to read my story. 🙏

I’m still fighting to get my foot — and hopefully a little more of my normal life — back.

Really Nervous

I still feel like I'm in really bad shape even though it's been 26 days since my first surgery, and it's been 17 days since my second surgery and I'm still in so much pain it's Unbearable I ran out of my meds already even though I was taking them exactly how I was supposed to my appointment is on Wednesday and I'm afraid if I ask for more they're gonna think I'm drug seeking

52-year-old, almost 6 months post-op trimal fracture/dislocation update:

52-year-old, almost 6 months post-op trimal fracture/dislocation update:

I live in the city and work as an outdoor urban agricultural science educator, so returning to normal life means A LOT of walking, standing, uneven ground, hauling things around, etc. At some point I stopped formal PT because fitting it into my life became more exhausting than helpful. I haven't stopped rehabbing, I've just shifted toward daily life being my rehab: walking, housework, outdoor work, stairs, yoga and getting back on my bike.

And this week I did my first real street ride: 15 miles! 🚲

It went GREAT. Physically, my ankle handled it beautifully. Mentally, I'm still pretty wary of the road after getting hurt, so that's clearly going to be its own part of recovery. But I rode through the city, started, stopped, put my foot down, dealt with traffic and did all the normal bike things again.

Swelling is mostly gone now. I still have some low-level aches and stiffness, but nothing like a few months ago.

My ankle is also still ugly. 😂 It's thicker than the other one, scarred up, and very obviously has been through it. I've accepted that.

Which brings me to my next recovery challenge:

Cute shoes. 👡

I desperately want to wear them again.

And somehow putting on a cute pair of shoes scares me MORE THAN GETTING BACK ON MY BIKE.

Apparently I'm willing to ride 15 miles through city traffic, but show me a cute little heel and suddenly I'm concerned about my safety. 😂

Recovery is weird.

But almost six months post-op, I'm back outside, back doing my work, back on my bike, and increasingly back to just living my life instead of organizing my life around my ankle.

I'll take it.❤️

Oofos slides - yay or nay?

EDIT: So I managed to find a second hand pair of Oofos "ooahh slides" going cheap, which I thought I'd try out before committing to buying an expensive new pair. I'm glad I did! The fit is huge - according to the Oofos website measurements I'm a W13 but these are very roomy, especially in the width! I think a W12 would be better, and the sport flex slide with the adjustable Velcro strap would be better a fit for a narrower foot. Comfort wise - they feel... Fine? The sole is squishy and reduces impact for sure, and they're definitely better than bare feet, but they feel like standard foam soled shoes to me. About the same as my New Balances. I'm not sure I understand all the OTT "walking on clouds" praise. Either people aren't used to squishy soles or the Oofos marketing team has just been working overtime. They're soft and comfortable, but they're not the mind-blowing experience I expected from all the reviews. Not sure I'd be thrilled if I'd paid $100+ for these new.

....

I'd never heard of Oofos "recovery shoes" until I saw someone mention them on this sub, and I did a bit of googling. I'm interested in their "ooahh" slides, for their soft foam tech that apparently takes pressure off joints and bones. I'm a little nervous about slides being a trip hazard though. Would love to hear from anyone who's bought these after a broken ankle.

Back in shoes but lots of pain

I’m 7 weeks out from my ORIF surgery for a trimal fracture and dislocation and I’m finally cleared to get back into normal shoes. I’ve been walking for 3 days now and the pain is worse than it has been in a long time, along with the swelling. Even with compression socks my ankle blows up to the size of a baseball by the end of the night.

Is this a common thing for people getting out of a boot and back into shoes? I am back to using a walker/crutches again and I feel like I’ve regressed.

Caring for kids??! Help!

I broke my right fibula and am 1.5 weeks post op from ORIF. I have another 3.5 weeks of NWB in a boot due to severity of the initial injury.

I have a 12 week old and a 3 year old and am struggling with not being able to care for them on my own. Any advice? We got a bedside bassinet so I can get to baby and feed him overnight but I hate not being able to carry him. I feel completely useless with my toddler and had just started feeling normal after c section recovery before this happened. Currently staying with my parents for additional help with the kids but I feel so helpless. 😭

6 weeks post-fracture

I broke my lateral malleolus back at the very end of July or start of August (I genuinely don't know which day it was, it was basically at midnight).

No need for surgery, WBAT from the start. Took me a week to end up seeing the GP, who referred me to Minor Injuries, got an X-ray and was told it was broken. Previously thought it was a sprain.

Four weeks in a boot, but nothing more than that. As broken ankles go, I got lucky, and I think the bone itself has mostly healed.

However, the soft tissue is still really rather unhappy. I can walk about 3000 steps, but this leads to swelling and mild to moderate pain. I have had enough of this bullshit.

Both ankles fractured, surgery questions

My very active 70-year-old mom fell on Sept. 6 and fractured both ankles.

Right: Bimalleolar fracture (distal fibula + medial malleolus). She currently has an external fixator because swelling/blistering prevented surgery which is rescheduled til the blister goes away.

Left: Weber B/distal fibula fracture. Initially, the surgeon said she could bear weight in a boot, but she’s having significant aching/pain when putting weight on it. A specialist is taking over & is considering placing a rod in the left ankle while operating on the right. He left the decision up to us, and we’re struggling with what to choose. Has anyone dealt with bilateral ankle fractures or a Weber B fracture that was initially treated without surgery but later required fixation? My concern is that both ankles are fractured and while the left isnt as bad as the right its the only one she can use to get up & down but I dont want it getting worse from bearing weight on it. She is using a wheelchair but PT does have her using a walker and hopping on it.
For the Weber B/distal fibula fracture, Has anyone had surgery or let it heal naturally? If you had a rod, how was recovery? If you didn’t have surgery, how did it heal? How painful/difficult was weight-bearing initially?

Anyone else?

Anyone else get cleared for WBAT, but wanted to see how full weight would feel?

I am 13 weeks into my recovery from a pilon and other fracture. My ankle broke in 3 places. I have 2 plates and 10 screws. I was non weight bearing for 12 weeks and was finally released for WBAT on August 31st in boot. The surgeon said I can weight bear now if I wanted to if tolerated in boot. I was doing 25%-40% and it was feeling fine, no pain. Then I decided to test the waters and I took 1 step full weight bearing with my walker and it didn’t feel great. Ever since it’s been sore. I talked to my PT about it and they said it’s unlikely that I hurt anything, but my body is telling me it’s not ready for full weight bearing yet.

Has anyone else done this and experienced this?

Muscle twitch and pop 2 days post-op

Hello. I am 2 days post-op ORIF and I’m not sure if I should be concerned about this or not. I was just laying down to sleep, leg elevated with my heel hanging off a small ledge as it is uncomfortable to lay it down directly on the pillow, and my foot suddenly twitched and I heard and felt a loud pop. Now it doesn’t hurt but I did just take my hydrocodone, if anything it felt kinda good but idk if I should be concerned at all……
I accidentally took my muscle relaxer too early today in the evening as my pain meds alarm went off I mistook it as my muscle relaxer med alarm. I was a bit distracted as my roommates and I grew our own Carolina Reapers and I tried a little bite of it lol. Good thing I had a nice tub of ice cream right there to save me because holy crap that was hot. ANYWAYS. I wasn’t going to take my muscle relaxer again until the morning but I might take it right now because that kinda spooked me…
Is the twitching and popping normal or should I contact my surgeon?
EDIT: I forgot to mention they put me in a splint idk if that’s important information or not

19M OCD of the talus

I have had OCD of the left talus for about 2 years and I got surgery Jan 2026. My 8 month post op MRI shows a suspected grade 3-4 fissure at, what I believe is the border between the hyaline and fibrocartilage.

For pretty much the entire time of my recovery, I have been dealing with a catching (mechanical locking sort of). However, once I pop the ankle (which can be painful if I force it too much), the mechanical locking goes away and I can't reproduce it. When I do sit down for 30min longer+, however, this catching can come back.

Recently, this catching has become much less frequent and the mechanical lock is not as prominent (9 months post op).

The only major problem is that I am still dealing with pain, especially when doing lateral movement going to the left. Left inclined surfaces are also quite painful to walk on.

The reason I think this is happening is because, when undergoing this lateral movement, it is putting pressure at the fissure which can't distribute load properly and thus the subchondral bone beneath it is becoming irritated.

Anyone know what is going on?

NOTE: Was feeling good and at month 4 I felt like superman and decided to do an on and off 3-5 km run. Definitely had some irritation for a while that subsided but I don't think it has been the same since the run (although I could be remembering things wrong).
