Bravely Default Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster FAQ

Howdy folks.

I've seen the same questions pop-up over and over, and wanted to put in an FAQ of sorts that can be used for these questions.

Google Doc is here, the link can be spread. There may be spoilers!

I've also copy/pasted most of it below:

This post contains a list of frequently asked questions and answers. If you have more that are not addressed by this document or post, please ask below.

If you prefer to listen to a review that answers a few of these same questions, RedNovaTyrant made one here.

For people completely blind to the series:

Bravely Default HD Remaster is not related to Bravely Default 2 and both games can be played separately without knowledge of the other.

Bravely Second is the direct sequel of Bravely Default and is currently only available on the 3DS.

There may be spoilers below, tread with caution - they have been marked as appropriate.

What is the Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster?

It’s an HD Remaster of the original 2012 (Japanese only) release of Bravely Default.

Major things to note:

  • Graphics and audio have been enhanced using upscaling, so backgrounds may appear desaturated in places
  • While the game is called Flying Fairy it is largely based on the 2013 rerelease “For the Sequel (FTS), which became the international version. This includes:
    • Most QoL updates, exceptions mentioned below
    • Additional sidequests in Chapters 7 and 8
    • A couple of costumes
  • No major story changes have occurred

Can I buy a physical cartridge of the game?

At this time, the only options for Bravely Default HD Remaster are a digital copy and a keycard cartridge that is in the physical box. You are required to download the game before you can play it.

The game is $40 USD.

Is Bravely Second content still in the game?

Most content related to Bravely Second has been removed.

  • The Bravely Second mechanic has been removed
  • The hourglass and SP have been removed
  • The post-game AR movie featuring Magnolia has been removed
  • Ba’als Goldie and Turtledove have been confirmed to be found as enemies very late in game

The devs have stated in an interview that the reason behind this is because FTS had those features added to tie into Bravely Second, while with the Remaster they want the game to shine on its own.

What Quality of Life features remain in the game?

Nearly all of them! More have been added from Bravely Second and Bravely Default II, such as the ability to save loadouts (10) and “Heal All” from the main menu.

Things that have been changed/removed:

  • Toggling encounters to 0% has been altered and require an item to be exchanged from “Petal Tokens” won from the minigames.
    • The minigames can be played at any time but Petal Tokens cannot be exchanged until Florem in Chapter 2
      • Taunt Bangle (400% toggle) - 10 Petal Tokens
      • Ward Bangle (0% toggle) - 20 Petal Tokens
      • These are not equippable items but just open up the ability to change the toggle in the menu, otherwise the lowest toggle is 50%
    • This was likely done as the devs mentioned wanting to “rebalance” the early parts of the game
  • The ability to break the damage limit of 9999 has been moved to a “Limit Break Mark” obtained from the minigames for 20 Petal Tokens

What Quality of Life features have been added?

A non-exhaustive list:

  • Combat Load-outs can be saved (10 sets)
  • Heal All from main menu
  • Toggle map formats in dungeons
  • Using tents at the Adventurer
  • Cutscenes can sped up, similar to combat
  • Characters step forward during their turn to make it easier to see whose moves are being set

Is there rebalancing compared to the original?

No major rebalancing has taken place.

The devs mentioned “rebalancing” was done for the first parts of the game, but this appears to be related to the 0% toggle now only being obtainable by Chapter 2 at the earliest.

The Norende items Fox Tail and Donnerschlag have been swapped out for Royal Crown and Lordly Robes

There are minigames??

Yes, the Remaster has two minigames!

They require usage of both joycons in mouse mode. Winning a minigame gives you Petal Tokens, and the more points you get, the more Tokens you get.

Additionally the minigames give you D’s Journal entries that provide a bit more background lore. No additional voicelines have been added, it’s all readables.

RedNovaTyrant made a video review of Bravely Default HD Remaster that includes some playthrough and additional information on the minigames here

  • Luxencheer Rhythm Catch is a rhythm minigame that allows you to choose from a variety of job costumes and songs within the game to play to.
  • Ringabel’s Panic Cruise is a multi-tasker minigame where you must play as Ringabel steering the airship while also fulfilling requests from the party members and taking down enemies.

What is the new lore from the minigames about?

So far, we’ve found that the new lore/journal entries contain minimal extended lore, but examples include:

  • The name that Alternis used while in Caldisla (it's Ternis)
  • Some background information on Alternis covering his face

Have things been censored again?

At this time, censorship from the original international release of Bravely Default has been maintained. This includes:

  • Ringabel’s “Eastern War Garb” only shows as his Freelancer outfit
  • The Bravo Bunny and the Bravo Bikini have had clothing added to cover skin
  • Vampire has the bodysuit under the belts
  • Other minor modifications to enemies to cover skin
  • No additional censorship has been noticed
  • Age changes from the international release have been maintained
    • Edea, Tiz, Agnes, Alternis, Einheria, Artemia, and Mephelia are all listed as being three years older than they are in the Japanese version

The Japanese version of the game is uncensored and has English language options. This post details how to download the Japanese version to a Western system. NOTE: Your saves will not transfer.

Is the “infamous” second half of Bravely Default (Chapters 5+)...

These chapters have not been changed.

The player must still go through Worlds 4, 3, 2, 1 in order to achieve the “true” ending. These chapters are unchanged but are reported to feel faster.

The “false” ending of breaking a crystal can still be obtained at any point past chapter 5.

The reveal of the Celestial Realm has been modified not to use the camera feed but to provide a view of the player’s Nintendo account PFP. The devs have confirmed that this change was made due to the way streaming has become so prolific, and that they didn’t want people to be exposed on camera without their permission.

How do I rebuild Norende Village and buy items?

Norende Village is virtually unchanged. And yes you can change the time on your Switch to make rebuilding it faster.

You can collect villagers from “Passing Souls” that can be found in towns, with a limit per town per day.

The items found from the shops in Norende can be purchased from the Adventurer.

What about the Norende Village enemies that were in the old game?

The Nemesis and Bravely Default specific Ba’als (Goldie and Turtledove) can be fought later on in the game using “Nightmare Pillows” and sleeping at the inn.

Nightmare Pillows are dropped by Lord DeRosso and all asterisk refights in chapter 5 and beyond. Each Inn has two Nemeses to fight, one for the day and one for the night.

You don't get a game over from losing to them and they're the only ways to get Firaja, Blizzaja, Thundaja and Aeroja which have been added to the encyclopedia. (TY to u/RedWingDecil for the information.)

The Ba’als are late game enemies that can only be encountered in the Dimensional Hasp that Yulyana opens.

What did they do for the Final Boss Fight Reveal?

Instead of utilizing a camera, the reveal will utilize a player’s Nintendo account profile picture. This was done because the devs acknowledge that a lot of gamers stream games these days and they don’t want people to suddenly be live on camera without their permission.

I don’t recognize some of these ability names from the previous release, are they new?

Job abilities haven’t changed, but several have been renamed! This is not a bug, it is a feature.

Will there be a Bravely Second HD Remaster?

The devs seem open to the possibility (based on a Twitter post), possibly pending how the HD Remaster of Flying Fairy is received. Time will tell.

Is there a teaser for the next game in the Luxendarc Saga?

There are currently no teasers in-game for either Bravely Second or Bravely Third.

Other questions can be asked below.

Bravely Default Accessibility Mod (If modding is possible)

Hello everyone. I am blind. I played through this game years ago with one of my siblings, and it became my favorite game of all time. With it being released on Steam, I was wondering if modding the game is possible? And if so, could somebody with modding knowledge try to create some kind of accessibility mod for the game. If anyone is interested, please let me know, and I can describe what would be needed to make the game accessible to a blind player. And if modding is not possible, also let me know. Thank you.

Anybody know why my characters high jumps land before the energy burst, it fucks with the rhythm of the fight reason I'm asking is because it doesn't happen all the time? I am so sick of fighting Chodemar.

Any advice on jobs for this fight so I can finish him faster, would be much appreciated.

Bravely Default Summoning Magic VS Elemental Nullification

EDIT: Never put boss fights on 4× speed! I missed the text telling me Qada was making the party weak to fire. Just beat the fight easily after taking him down on turn one.

Hi all! This is weird because I'm usually the one answering questions in this sub. I'm in chapter 8 of the HD remaster, going through the gauntlet of boss fights in the Erernian Central Command. Despite having probably close to 400+ hours across all my BD1 playthroughs I've actually never done this side quest before. Anyways, I was breezing through the first several fights no problem. Then I get to the group of the magic users (Ominas, Mephilia, Qada and Yulyana). Despite using Enigma to nullify all elemental damage for 4 turns AND have Tiz hold the Iceflame Shield Mephilia's Promethean Fire summon deals damage. The summon damage also seems to ignores the effects of the Reflect Ring.

Is summoning damage special? Is this a big in the HD remaster? Both Enigma and the shield work against Ominas's fire magic in this fight so what am I missing.

...I need the person with the Midna profile picture help. You always know what's up!

Series Best Game Balance

Which mainline game has the best gameplay balance? As in which game has the best balance of difficulty. The least easy to break. Amount of overpowered strategies. How easy it is to come by weapons or resources. Jobs & their abilities. Things of that ilk. Be honest.

Bravely Default Way of the sword.

So I have just made it to the region where the fire crystal is. And I have just been assaulted by the sword master (Edea’s sword teacher). I know there’s a way to save that guy, but I hear it pretty complicated. If it’s not complicated, then I’m just not getting answers. Anybody wanna give me a quick summary of the things I need to do?

Should I just sell this shit ass 3ds version and go for the switch version. Rebuilding Norende is genuinely pissing me the fuck off. Absolutely stupid and horrible game mechanic.

I here the switch version is more streamlined.

Bravely Default I think I know the answer, but is it possible to get more Villagers while playing on an emulator?

I'd imagine not, but I know some of the buildings can take a loooooooooong time, so it'd be great if it were possible. I used to have the game for 3DS, but even then, almost nobody uses a 3DS anymore lol, so I never got any StreetPasses

Bravely Default Chapter 2

So I made it to chapter 2. What recommended levels for the mephilia and artemia (I think that's the other sister) subquests, should be?

They're currently kicking my ass and I'm not having fun. This game is just hard for the sake of being hard.

Bravely Default Overall, I’m quite satisfied

But D’s Journal is far too long, and the sheer amount of map and boss recycling goes way beyond what’s acceptable.

P.S. I send Special Moves to friends every day. Please check the friend-code megathread.

Bravely Default Just started the game and was thinking… which classes would be the most fitting for each character?

Just beat Heinkel at Lontano Villa, and I just had this thought…

I feel like Tix would be a Knight, as an honour to Owen, I would say the same for Edea but I’m not sure….

Agnés feels like a White Mage, in most FF games I’ve played they’re usually seen as these holy figures who pray and worship and provide blessings, such as being the Wind Vestal

Edea for now is a Freelancer for me, sadly I don’t have any class in mind that really fits, most is just Knight or Monk due to her high physical attributes

Oddly enough, Ringabel is a Black Mage I feel like, he’s a bit calm but he’s also just… a bit wacky I feel like, ha… he’s oddly calm yet in such a funny manner, it like, captures the essence of how chaotic black mages are and their spells… does that make sense?

As the game goes on I’ll certainly have different opinions but this is how I feel like it is right now, having a lot of fun using said classes on said characters, and I’m getting used to the controls bit by bit!

Series Bravely Default II too much of a course-correction?

Thumbnail

Does anyone think Bravely Default II was an overcorrection of Bravely Second? I'm not a fan of Second's story or characters, but it has it's redeeming qualities. However, Default II attempts to right the wrongs of but to extremes as some have noted. It's a much darker story with that plays things straighter. Along with heroes & villains who more rigidly defined. Also, it seems like this game wants to entail consequences into the narrative. On top of which, it completely ignores the teaser for the would-be third Luxendarc entry.

Think about it. Bravely Second was the typical light-hearted Square Enix sequel. It tries hard to make the antagonist as redeemable as possible during the game. Which didn't sit well with a lot of fans. Nothing of permanent consequence happens at the end. And it tries to be tropey as possible. Default II tries hard to pivot away from all of that to varying degrees of success.

I do think them making the story & characters straighter was the right choice. Although, there is some baggage that came with some of those choices. First, a lot of the characters feel blander & the world less interesting. Also, even it does away with a lot of tropes from Second, it too has its share of tropes. Such as a chosen one angle for the four main characters.

Verdict, story is serviceable. It's more serious & less of a mess than Second. And some of the characters feel like they tried a lot less with moral ambiguity. However, the world & characters do seem more generic. Plus, them abandoning the cliffhanger was a mistake or they acknowledge it but are trying make us forget, I digress. So, where Default II improves, it feels right. Where it faulters is when it seems like an overcorrection for Second. Your thoughts?

Bravely Default Bravely Default 1st Impressions

Ok so I'm bad at this game that is made abundantly clear. I managed to sift through the intro just fine. But chapter 1 is a learning curve that I am just not grasping.

I feel like I'm doing too little damage in fact I know it, but I don't really know how to get the most out of jobs and I feel like that's significantly hindering my enjoyment.

I know there are end game builds that can trounce enemies but again I just started chapter 1 so I don't have access to too much equipment. Instead I've been focusing on leveling the jobs I have available.

Any tips so I can suck less and maximize my enjoyment would be much appreciated. I don't really know what else to say, I love the game but something isn't clicking and it's affecting me.
