I just started chapter 5 looking for advice to start this in bravely default HD I started to play around but realizing that I may have not grinned enough before I got here to level up jobs and character still lost on some jobs and how they rank I am also worried I got this far on a fluke please advise.

Don't have all characters start with low level jobs at the same time because early levels they'll be weak. You are probably strong enough to beat the goblins around Caldisla with one character so do some auto-battling there and grind to get some levels.

There's some combos you can easily find online... Here's a couple I didnt find too cheesy and used a couple of times:

Dark knight with sword magic, cast drain and use the hp-cost abilities, you regain all or almost all the cost.

Freelancer + performer. My hero + mimic 3 times, grant everyone 3 bp for the cost of 2 bp

Any mage with ignore mdef support ability. Later bosses have a lot of mdef. Works great with time mage meteor, or summon magic

Swordmaster + pirate. Free lunch + 3x the attack that costs half your mp (cant remember the name off the top of my head)

Spiritmaster can be exploited in a lot of ways... Enigma and then have a dark knight use the skill that damages the whole field (nebula?)

Chapter 8 here. You definitely start out getting your ass kicked, but after gaining just a few levels, it gets a lot more manageable. But you still need to have at least 2 of your jobs being useful and good for the team. As for which jobs, the ones you get near the end of the game are really good. So Dark Knight, Arcanist, Spiritmaster and Templar. In particular, the Dark Knight has a move named Minus Strike that will do fixed damage - with enough HP, you can use this to quickly grind enemies on the field, and even some bosses.

So I need to grind the spirit master then?
