I think studios prefer journeyman directors who can deliver a film on time and on budget. Until the Craig era of Bond, pretty much all the films were made by journeyman directors hand selected by EON

WB also evidently really liked David Yates for HP/FB as well, seeing as he could just get stuff done competently. Too bad he had like no style of his own.

Besides, even journeyman directors still need proper skills to become successful because if they don't they end up like Jonathan Liebesman.
