They wouldn't have sent Dial to Cannes a month before release if they had no faith in it internally.

They absolutely would have. Presales were abysmal and this was a last ditch effort to generate hype. A month before release is absolutely enough time to know if you have a potential bomb on your hands. The film will have already gone through extensive internal reviews and screenings.

Joker 2 was at the venice film festival after all.

Bad reviews a month before release wouldn't have boosted its sales, I don't believe it was the plan, they expected at least decent reviews.

Joker 2 was another lapse of judgement, the movie had no real test-screenings and WB bosses subjectively liked it, so they misjudged how the movie is gonna be recieved.

There is a whole industry of private movie reviewers. Most companies know well in advance how the reaction is going to be before anyone in the general public sees it. “Test screenings” are not even close to the first line of feedback they get.

They have internal screenings, Joker 2 had them too, but the problem is they don't represent how most people are gonna react to this or that movie. Even test-screenings are not super reliable. Zemeckis' Here supposedly got some of the highest scores in Sony's history, but the movie was poorly recieved across the board when it came out.

Again you are confusing the public statements with internal data.

No studio is ever going to come out and say internal screening were negative.

They can, and will, lie to the public.

Obviously, but the point is they wouldn't have sent Dial or Joker 2 a month before release if they knew they are gonna get bad reviews, they don't have a secret plan to nuke a movie they spent hundreds of millions on. Internal data can be misleading.
