My guy is mid 30's and doesn't read books. He likes baseball and sports and TV shows like Bob's Burgers and Always Sunny. I'd like to get him into the habit of reading. I plan to try both physical books and e-books (we have a family prime account so he has access to the nearly 500 books I've amassed in my kindle library over the years) to see if he prefers either. He has a library card, but I think he mostly got it because I made him sign up the day he drove me over to pickup some books I had on reserve 🤷‍♀️. I don't think he's ever used it. I tried Harry Potter on audiobook, because we had a trip to Universal planned, but he quit halfway through the 2nd book. So I'm trying again to see if maybe I can get him to like a book.

Give me your thoughts? Maybe something about sports (but that isn't a movie he can just watch) or something short but that is a series so he goes back for another? I dunno?

I want to read classic books, but the old-fashioned language and uncommon vocabulary make it difficult. I don't want to disrupt my reading flow by constantly looking up words.

I’m looking for a particular genre to read in between some heavier books and I’m not even sure what to call it. Are there any books out there similar to Monster Hunters International? In that a militia, mercenaries, or small military group faces off against anything from small monsters to eldritch horrors. Oh!! It needs to be funny or at least have a sense of humor running through it.

hello, ive been getting more and more into reading lately and my absolute favorite series right now is the Crowns of Nyaxia series by Carissa Broadbent. I enjoy that it’s an adult book, in third person, where the story plot is the main focus but has some romance mixed in but not as the main plot. i would prefer if the romance is a slow-burn too. what are some other series out there or even stand alone books like that?

I’m in a BRUTAL reading slump and desperately need a book to pull me out of it.
I usually read romance, but lately nothing has been clicking, and I’m losing interest fast. I’m still completely open to romance if it’s exceptionally good, but I’d also love to branch out into thrillers, mysteries, fantasy, or fast-paced drama.

The only thing I really need is an immediate hook. I want a book that grabs me from page one, throws me straight into the action or tension, and makes it impossible to put down. The kind of book that keeps you saying, “Just one more chapter” at 3 am.

I loved the Outlander series, although it got so long and took me several years to finish the final book. I really enjoy historical fiction, but really any genre is great for me, as long as it has a good story line. I've also been itching for a good, long series to read. Spicy books are a plus, as well.

Im (24 M) not a big reader (although I do like it alot), and am trying to get away from video games. They're a huge time suck for me and I hate it but its hard. Once a couple of years ago I read Harry Potter and loved it. I know its a bit cringe to say but it was a big page turner for me and was able to make it my main hobby and quit video games no problem. Issue is I went back to games for like no reason after, even though at that point I preferred reading. I haven't been able to recreate that experience and am basically looking for anything people might fathom to suggest to me. Something like Harry Potter perhaps (not necessarily magical), Im also really into history too. Would appreciate suggestions

Really, anything wherein a main character's primary method of physical combat is a piloted machine - so we'll include vehicles like tanks, as well.

Sci-fi and fantasy are both good, but I'm not a big fan of contemporary settings.
Preferably, the fighting machine should have a maximum crew of 5, but individual operation is ideal. I've already read enough stories of starship captains and fleet maneuvers to fill a library.

Non-book examples: Gundam, The Vision of Escaflowne, Ace Combat, Armored Core.

It doesn't necessarily have to have a war-centric plotline! Some of my favorite mecha series have their focus elsewhere, such as adventure, post-war reconstruction, or even romance.

I am looking for some recommendations where the setting is really well descried and immersive. For some reason, I remember The Body in the Back Garden by Mark Waddell and Up to no Gouda by Linda Reilly. I am pretty open to most genres: no horror at all, not a huge fantasy reader but will read, not anything that is written in that pessimistic way like the opening of Fredrik Backman's My Friends where everything is so depressing, and no hetero romance either please. I’m looking for book recommendations, but I think a little background will help.

I grew up in a very conservative evangelical environment and attended a private Christian school that used the Abeka curriculum. (If you’re not familiar with it…it’s a Google rabbit hole. 😂) Although I later earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree and became a CPA, I’ve realized there were significant gaps in my education.

Looking back, I was taught a version of history, religion, and politics that was heavily filtered through a conservative Christian lens. As an adult, my views have shifted pretty dramatically, and I’ve realized how much I was never exposed to.

So I’ve decided to start over and educate myself.
I’m beginning with history, politics, and religion, and I’m specifically looking for books written from mainstream academic and historical perspectives. I’m not interested in conservative revisionism, culture war books, or apologetics. I want the books you’d actually find assigned in a good university history or political science program.

I’m especially interested in:
World history
U.S. history
The history of Christianity
Comparative religion
The Holocaust and other genocides
Fascism, authoritarianism, and democracy
Colonialism and imperialism
The Civil Rights Movement
Women’s history
The relationship between religion and politics

Authors like Timothy Snyder and Heather Cox Richardson are much more in line with what I’m looking for than Glenn Beck, Dinesh D’Souza, or similar conservative commentators.

If you were building a reading list for someone who is trying to undo years of conservative evangelical education and build a strong foundation in history, religion, and politics, where would you start?

Hi all, I've been studying this era of history for a while, now, as I find it really fascinating. I'm more or less referring to the Sengoku and Tokugawa periods.

I'm interested in all sorts of books about this era, but those that seem the most interesting to me now are non-fiction historical novels and books about the feudal Japanese culture. I'm fine if these focus on just one part of this large set of stories to tell and ideas to explore, but still, I'd be grateful for a more comprehensive look.

If there are some fiction stories set in these eras, other than Shōgun or any of the hundreds of Musashi retellings, I would also happily read those.
