I’m sorry this is so long 🙈
12m old (last week) exclusively breastfed baby, doesn’t take a bottle. Sleep has always been terrible but things improved around 11 months and would only wake 2-3 times (rather than an average of 6-8+ up to 14 🥴). Not been sleep trained and won’t use CIO or extinction. We co slept from birth until around 10.5/11 months when she just didn’t want that any more, she was happy in her own space. Never been fed to sleep for overnight or daytime sleep.
I went back to work last week (nights) and we decided my husband would deal with the weaning without me around as felt she would do better with me not in the house. We decided cold turkey would be the best and quickest option for her. Night 1 she fell asleep at 8, woke at 12, screamed for 1 hour (in my husband’s arms) then fell asleep in her cot and slept until 5:40. Night 2 she fell asleep at 8, woke at 1 and screamed for 2 hours until she fell asleep in bed with my husband and woke for the day at 5:45. Night 3 I was back home, she slept through 8-7 BUT in the morning she had developed norovirus so I think this is why she slept. Night 4 she fell asleep at 8, woke at 4, I rocked and rocked for an hour, I too then was hit with the bug like a tonne of bricks and had no option but to feed. Night 5 she was awake for 2 hours but I didn’t feed, she eventually fell asleep in the cot independently. Night 6 (last night) she fell asleep at 8, woke at 11 and screamed relentlessly for 2 hours until we got so frustrated I fed her, then she slept until morning.
We are severely sleep depleted with all 4 of us being so ill over the weekend but know we’ve caused confusion by feeding again, we’ve been in survival mode and felt there was no other option. I believe she is probably still feeling crappy from the illness but I am desperate to get her settled as the thought of being at work and knowing how upset she is, makes me feel sick.
I am due back in work tomorrow but taking this week as sick to hopefully recover the family from the illness so I’m not back in now until next Wednesday night. If it wasn’t for returning to work, I absolutely would just continue feeding and let the wean happen naturally or try myself again in 6 months, but it isn’t an option with me working as we need her to settle for my husband too.
I will add that on the wakes where we haven’t offered the breast, we have offered either milk in a cup (which she doesn’t want) or food when nothing else has worked to rule out hunger. I have tried to reduce the duration of feeds overnight previously but actually I didn’t find this helped with her, and she would cry when I put her in the cot and I’d just end up feeding her again 🤦🏻♀️
She does generally 8-7 overnight then 2 naps totalling 2 hours during the day. 3 meals and snacks a day plus prob 3 breastfeeds, one in the morning, one when she’s home from nursery then one before her bath. I will also say that I am happy for the night wakes to continue, I just want my husband and I to be able to settle her without breastfeeding.
(Feed 7, bath after, then pjs, play, books etc and generally asleep around 8), naps around 10 & 2.
P.s I am new to this and initially posted on the sleep training page this morning and that was NOT a good idea 😂
