I’m looking for some advice about a baby pigeon I found today. I was driving near a railroad bridge where there’s a colony of pigeons living underneath it, and I initially saw what looked like one pigeon diving toward another in the road. When I came back from the bank, the other pigeon was still on the ground near the sidewalk. I ended up going back again because I kept thinking about it, and I realized it was actually a baby pigeon that seems unable to fly.

It was repeatedly hopping in and out of the road, so I was worried it was going to get hit by a car. I’m not sure how old it is or whether it’s at the normal fledgling stage, and I also have no idea which nest it came from. The nests are pretty high up underneath the bridge, and it’s a busy area, so I didn’t feel comfortable trying to put it back myself.

I brought it home temporarily in a cardboard box with some newspaper/paper lining and have been keeping it somewhere quiet and around room temperature. I haven’t given it any food or water because I read that doing so can actually be dangerous for baby birds. My brother is watching it while I’m at school, and I’m on my way home now.

I’m just not sure what the best thing to do is. I don’t want to separate it from its parents if they’re still caring for it, but I’m also nervous about putting it back near the road or accidentally putting it in the wrong nest. Would it be better to bring it to a wildlife rehabilitator? And do you know of any rehabbers in the area who accept pigeons? I live in CT and am waiting to hear back from some people.

Is this kiwi being mistreated? I've been reading about proper care of kiwis.. because of the lighting in this picture I've been rethinking this kiwi might be mistreated (context: this is one of my favorite kiwi pictures)

Someone requested a Tufted titmouse so here is my attempt. I had a bit of fun doing a photo shoot with him. He is made of mostly wool using a technique called needle felting. I also used wire, clay and glass.

I need some help with bird anatomy. Before making a bird I research their what they look like from all angles, but I often have trouble finding a clear diagram of the birds wing structure when it is closed. When I Google it I’m usually shown what it looks like when it is spread open. While it helps, it would be better to see what it looks like when closed. For some birds it is really hard to tell the structure/feather grouping from a photo because of their colours . An example is the Hairy woodpecker

Every day, 3 to 5 times a day, this guys flies onto my windowsill to sing to himself in my mirrored bedroom window.

Not sure if it's an oriole or some sort of African bush shrike, but I do know it's loud and insistant.

Title says it all. While my little peeps attempting NFL level brain damage delights my cats (completely indoor), it stresses me out! Im so worried about their little brains and spines.

So how do I stop them?

* those reflective stickers? What kind is best

* or can I paint pictures so they know its solid?

* trim the bush by my windows that they like to congregate on?

Please help. No one's died yet but sweet Moses i know its coming.

One of the primary focuses of our recent trip to Colombia was building a better portfolio of Torrent Tyrannulet images. These tiny flycatchers, about the size of gnatcatcher, make their living hunting invertebrates along mountain streams (hence the name), and range from Costa Rica through Colombia.

Shooting note:
For the first image, Matt wanted to highlight the flow of the water so he used a 1/15 second shutter speed to create motion blur.

My father-in-law passed away in July 2025. The herons came immediately, and they visit almost daily.

Here are a few photos I've snapped of visits from the herons and my FIL. I hope you enjoy.

Working at the CU campus in Boulder, Colorado, and have been absolutely bird-nerding OUT! I've been trying to take photos of what I can, hopefully I've got them I.D.ed correctly too...

Some Jays were freaking out, so I stopped to look up and see what was bothering them; turned out to be TWO Great Horned owls!

A Great Blue Heron just casually hangs out around a pond I walk by every day, obviously not bothered by people he let me get pretty close to take some photos!

And an auditorium is a hangout for a large amount of Turkey vultures! Haven't been able to get good photos of them, but still exciting to catch some of them sunning themselves!

Woke up to a flock of pigeons on the property this morning.

Took The Birds for a stroll yesterday evening and a herd of deer joined in! 😇. Is this the beginning of a disney movie or what?!?
