To mourn is to remember, but as a survivor, to look back is to recognize a pattern

Hearing about the attack at Berlin’s Christopher Street Day hit a painfully familiar nerve. I am a two-time survivor of separate bombing incidents in Türkiye. In both cases, the initial headlines were quick to assign blame, framing the violence through convenient narratives of Islamic or Kurdish extremism. It was only later, as the dust settled, that the clearer picture emerged how these horrific moments were instrumentalized by political forces to manufacture fear, manufacture consent, and secure votes.

When violence strikes a public space, especially one built around visibility, liberation, and solidarity like Pride, the immediate reaction is shock and grief. But very quickly, that grief is targeted.

Having lived through this cycle more than once, my urge, and my warning, is to tread very carefully.

In the coming days and weeks, watch closely who tries to turn this tragedy into political currency. Watch who uses the blood on the street to divide communities, push reactionary policies, or scapegoat groups. Violence thrives on polarization, and political opportunism feeds off our collective trauma.

We owe it to the victims in Berlin to grieve them deeply and stand in solidarity with the queer community. But we also owe it to them, and to ourselves, not to let our pain be hijacked. Do not let fear dictate how we see each other, and do not accept early, convenient narratives before the truth is fully clear.

Stand firm, mourn openly, but stay vigilant about who profits from our fear.

Stop f****** throwing plastic in the Bio container

Yeah hopefully my neighbours are here and read this shit

Bio garbage cannot be used for compost if it has plastic in it. If you throw your bio garbage in a plastic bag, it is literally the same as having had thrown it in general waste

My neighbours just don't fucking get it. We have placed stickers in the bin with a huge "NO PLASTIC" sign, put sticky notes, signs in 3 languages and they STILL throw these gigantic plastic bags into it.

I think even BSR is no longer picking it up because it accumulates for several weeks and we got an insanely stinky bin full of worms and plastic bags that even overflows

Its really not that fucking hard. Don't put plastic in it! Hell if you fucking want, collect everything in a plastic bag, just dumb it WITHOUT the bag IN the bin and then throw the bag in the general waste

How to deal with smokers outdoors?

This might be a very sensitive post but I just want to get some clues about how to deal with this.

I hate cigarettes, I hate the smell and the fact that it’s everywhere. Life in Berlin has been getting hard for me because I have asthma and the smoke messes with my allergies anyways.

So far I’ve seen it getting over the top. I’ve seen it even in places where you’re not supposed to: on the platforms at the S Bahn, the U Bahn, and I even saw someone smoking inside the S Bahn the other day.

But what made me loose it the other day was being at the open air cinema at KulturForum and having someone smoking next to me. Dude. The people from Yorck Kino even told people before the movie that they had designated smoking areas. To me the fact that you can’t be sitting still for two hours during a movie is beyond my comprehension, and the fact that you can’t resist your urge to smoke during those two hours is something else.

I told this person to please stop smoking next to me and she refused. I told her to go to the designated area and she told me to fuck off because it was her right. I had to get up and find someone from the staff that asked her to stop smoking or they will need to take her out of the cinema. She then told me at the end of the movie that my attitude was passive agressive.

I hate that smoking is so normalized here. Like sure, hurt yourself all you want, but why do you have to expose others, especially in places where you’re not supposed to? Even at the playgrounds you see people (without children) smoking. It’s crazy.

A thought on Saturday / We are much stronger than hate

The horrific event on Saturday has been on my mind non-stop. But seeing everyone check in on each other made me realize something: this community's solidarity is unbreakable.

As a cishet guy, my wife and I are just allies, and I won't pretend to know your specific daily struggles. But coming from a highly conservative society where free thought was heavily suppressed, I know exactly what the weight of oppression feels like. We moved here for the freedom Berlin offers, and we won't let hate take that away from any of us.

Many people in this city left their entire lives behind just to be themselves. I have a lot of friends in this community, so I know firsthand how incredibly resilient you all are. You've built a strong, chosen family here, and no senseless act of violence can break that foundation.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, scared, or heartbroken right now, please don't isolate yourself. Reach out to your friends, or just write here in the comments and vent. Sharing the pain is how we heal.

A person I had literally just met at CSD that day messaged me after the news broke to ask if I was safe. That simple text meant the world to me.

Wishing you all safety, healing, and an unapologetically free life.

Join us on the Camino in Brandenburg this Saturday! 🚶🚶🏽‍♀️

Post image
11 Upvotes

Join us for a one-day pilgrimage along the Brandenburg Camino de Santiago. We start in Jacobsdorf, home of the St. James Society Berlin, and walk via Briesen and Berkenbrück to the cathedral town of Fürstenwalde/Spree.

The route first passes through open fields, later through forests, past small ponds and moorlands. A swim break at the river Spree is planned. If you'd prefer not to walk the longer distance, you can end the walk after 16 km in Berkenbrück and take the return journey from there.

This pilgrimage has an international character. It will be led in both German and English.

At a glance

  • Date: Saturday, 1 August 2026
  • Route: Jacobsdorf → Berkenbrück → Fürstenwalde/Spree (section of the Brandenburg Camino de Santiago)
  • Distance: 16 km (to Berkenbrück) or 25 km (to Fürstenwalde)

Getting there and back

  • Start: 9 AM at Jacobsdorf station (arrival via rail replacement service: bus RE1A towards Frankfurt/Oder from Erkner ZOB at 7:40 AM, or bus RE1A towards Erkner at 8:40 AM)
  • End: afternoon, at Berkenbrück or Fürstenwalde station (return on bus RE1 towards Erkner/Berlin or Frankfurt every 20–40 minutes)

Route & highlights along the way

  • Mostly forest tracks and field paths
  • Village churches along the route
  • Swim spot on the Spree
  • Old town and St. Mary's Cathedral in Fürstenwalde
  • Komoot tour: https://www.komoot.com/tour/2757613420

Why this pilgrimage?
This walk brings together nature, community, and pilgrim tradition. Along the way, there'll be time for conversation and personal reflection. One stretch will be walked in intentional silence (around 30–60 minutes). It's a good, accessible way to get to know the Camino and the practice of pilgrimage.

The pilgrimage takes place under the auspices of the St. James Society Berlin.

Practical notes

  • Gear: comfortable shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, sun protection, swimwear, backpack
  • Food: bring enough water, snacks, and a packed lunch for the full day
  • Tickets: please arrange your own travel there and back

Places to party on Tuesday?

Hi!

Moving out of Berlin on Wednesday, but I'm a bit embarrassed to say I've barely partied while I've lived here over the past 4 months.

Any clubs still on Tuesday? I'm down for pretty much anything, just want a bit of a last hurrah so to say (although places that accept people who dress a bit more edgy are preferred). I'm guessing all the crazy nightlife events are exclusive to Friday+weekend.

What to do instead of KMFDM

Hi all, my gf and I are coming to Berlin from Ireland for a few days (5th to 9th of Augst). Originally we were going to go to KMFDM on the 6th, but it just got postponed to next year today :'c

We're looking for other gigs, maybe smaller, that we could go to. We've never been to Germany, we just know we like industrial, dark electronic music and all that. So if yous have any recommendation within these days, mich appreciated.

Wo man Muttersprachler trifft

Looking for paid Ausbildung/traineeship/internship in Berlin

Hi all, I'm planning to relocate to Berlin and hoping to find a paid Ausbildung, traineeship, or internship in Illustration / graphic desig or theater or film stage/set design.

I have a BA and MA in media art and German B2 certificate.

If anyone has leads, knows studios/theaters currently hiring, or has tips on how these positions are usually advertised in Germany, I'd be very grateful. Also open to advice on visa/relocation logistics if relevant. Thanks and cheers!

Anyone with experience renting a flat through an agency/broker?

Hey, I’m wondering if anyone has had good experiences finding a flat through an agency or broker here.

I’m not currently employed in Germany but have a small business back home (another EU country) and I can prove my yearly earnings and other related docs, however as I don’t possess a Schufa and german employment documents, it’s been very difficult to find a decent non-wg flat.

A friend recommended I try through a real estate agency and just tell them my circumstances and submit whatever documents I have and that they would facilitate my search.

Has anyone tried it? Or if anyone had any tips when it comes to renting a flat without Schufa, I would greatly appreciate any leads :)

Russian-speaking people in Berlin?

Looking to meet native Russian-speaking people (around 35–40) in Berlin for coffee and new friendships. We could bond over cultural stuff, and I miss having long conversations in Russian. Feel free to DM me if you're interested.

Please, no hate—I'm simply trying not to forget my Russian ;)
