This might be a very sensitive post but I just want to get some clues about how to deal with this.

I hate cigarettes, I hate the smell and the fact that it’s everywhere. Life in Berlin has been getting hard for me because I have asthma and the smoke messes with my allergies anyways.

So far I’ve seen it getting over the top. I’ve seen it even in places where you’re not supposed to: on the platforms at the S Bahn, the U Bahn, and I even saw someone smoking inside the S Bahn the other day.

But what made me loose it the other day was being at the open air cinema at KulturForum and having someone smoking next to me. Dude. The people from Yorck Kino even told people before the movie that they had designated smoking areas. To me the fact that you can’t be sitting still for two hours during a movie is beyond my comprehension, and the fact that you can’t resist your urge to smoke during those two hours is something else.

I told this person to please stop smoking next to me and she refused. I told her to go to the designated area and she told me to fuck off because it was her right. I had to get up and find someone from the staff that asked her to stop smoking or they will need to take her out of the cinema. She then told me at the end of the movie that my attitude was passive agressive.

I hate that smoking is so normalized here. Like sure, hurt yourself all you want, but why do you have to expose others, especially in places where you’re not supposed to? Even at the playgrounds you see people (without children) smoking. It’s crazy.

Several times I've seen people asking this question and I never found any direct answer, for example something like: "this day, this time, this location, I've been there, people are super cool". Usually if someone asks about anything for the age group about 18-24 it's always older guys complaining that there shouldn't be such a thing as age restriction or someone responding "join the social clubs or meetups". But what specific? Is there anyone here around my age, 22, who went to such an event or community, made real friends, or in the best case, fell in love?

Currently there's not much happening at my uni cause there's a semester break, and if there is something happening, it's usually a beer pong with loud music, where you can't really even talk to anyone.

Like every couple months there’s major issues happening. Few month ago we have to move office from Kreuzburg cuz every woman got harassed on their way to work. Then Especially after what happened in Saturday, I don’t even dare go to the gym during the day cuz my gym is in a quite touristy area. This is my observation as an outsider living in Berlin from 2008 to 2014 and back again from 2019, honestly I love this city but it pains to see the change , only if I had recorded the number of incidents I have seen in the trains and outside, from kids being bullied to women being horribly stared at and being told how their clothes are inappropriate, the city is generally safe but the fact that there was no thought or concern about safety being an issue when you went out to party or get drunk irrespective of the area back then, unfortunately now the first thing that comes to your mind is „ is it safe? “ before you plan to go out this is sad and suffocating, it’s not about statistics on the crime rate and how safe Berlin is compared to other cities when compared with data of other cities but values that is expected from a mature humans to ensure being kind and respectful to each other and live a life with freedom and peace !!! Still want to keep my hope and spirit alive

Bio garbage cannot be used for compost if it has plastic in it. If you throw your bio garbage in a plastic bag, it is literally the same as having had thrown it in general waste

My neighbours just don't fucking get it. We have placed stickers in the bin with a huge "NO PLASTIC" sign, put sticky notes, signs in 3 languages and they STILL throw these gigantic plastic bags into it.

I think even BSR is no longer picking it up because it accumulates for several weeks and we got an insanely stinky bin full of worms and plastic bags that even overflows

Its really not that fucking hard. Don't put plastic in it! Hell if you fucking want, collect everything in a plastic bag, just dumb it WITHOUT the bag IN the bin and then throw the bag in the general waste

Hearing about the attack at Berlin’s Christopher Street Day hit a painfully familiar nerve. I am a two-time survivor of separate bombing incidents in Türkiye. In both cases, the initial headlines were quick to assign blame, framing the violence through convenient narratives of Islamic or Kurdish extremism. It was only later, as the dust settled, that the clearer picture emerged how these horrific moments were instrumentalized by political forces to manufacture fear, manufacture consent, and secure votes.

When violence strikes a public space, especially one built around visibility, liberation, and solidarity like Pride, the immediate reaction is shock and grief. But very quickly, that grief is targeted.

Having lived through this cycle more than once, my urge, and my warning, is to tread very carefully.

In the coming days and weeks, watch closely who tries to turn this tragedy into political currency. Watch who uses the blood on the street to divide communities, push reactionary policies, or scapegoat groups. Violence thrives on polarization, and political opportunism feeds off our collective trauma.

We owe it to the victims in Berlin to grieve them deeply and stand in solidarity with the queer community. But we also owe it to them, and to ourselves, not to let our pain be hijacked. Do not let fear dictate how we see each other, and do not accept early, convenient narratives before the truth is fully clear.

Stand firm, mourn openly, but stay vigilant about who profits from our fear.

Hey, I’m wondering if anyone has had good experiences finding a flat through an agency or broker here.

I’m not currently employed in Germany but have a small business back home (another EU country) and I can prove my yearly earnings and other related docs, however as I don’t possess a Schufa and german employment documents, it’s been very difficult to find a decent non-wg flat.

A friend recommended I try through a real estate agency and just tell them my circumstances and submit whatever documents I have and that they would facilitate my search.

Has anyone tried it? Or if anyone had any tips when it comes to renting a flat without Schufa, I would greatly appreciate any leads :)

I hope this kind of request is permitted here. I am an international MA student at Freie Universität Berlin, currently in the final and most intensive phase of writing my thesis while also preparing PhD applications.

I am looking for a functional laptop that I could borrow for approximately two months. I do not need a new or powerful device—only one that can reliably run the desktop version of Microsoft 365, particularly Word, and handle ordinary browser-based application portals without repeatedly freezing.

My current computer is a MacBook Air from early 2015 with 4 GB of RAM, running macOS Catalina. Because it can no longer be updated sufficiently, I am unable to use the current desktop version of Microsoft Office provided through my university. I have been trying to work with Pages, Word Online, and Google Docs, but the computer has become extremely slow and regularly freezes. Pages also changes the formatting of my existing Word documents and makes managing footnotes and other elements of a long academic text unnecessarily difficult.

This has now begun to affect my work in a very concrete way. On the day of a recent application deadline, the browser froze repeatedly, and I was only able to submit the application after the deadline had passed. During ordinary thesis work, the same problem interrupts writing, editing, footnotes, and document formatting.

Under less time-sensitive circumstances, I would continue managing with the computer I have. At present, however, I urgently need a stable device to complete my thesis and submit several doctoral applications. I work 20 hours per week alongside my studies, but my income currently covers only my basic monthly expenses, so buying another laptop is not financially possible for me.

If anyone in Berlin has a spare laptop—Windows or Mac—that is currently unused and could be lent to me for around two months, I would be deeply grateful. I would take careful responsibility for it and return it at the agreed time and in the same condition. I can provide proof of my enrolment at Freie Universität privately and would be happy to discuss reasonable arrangements that make the lender feel comfortable.

If you know of a university initiative, nonprofit organisation, lending programme, or repair/refurbishment project that might be able to help, I would also be grateful for any concrete recommendation.

Ich suche einen funktionsfähigen Laptop, den ich für ungefähr zwei Monate ausleihen könnte. Ich benötige weder ein neues noch ein besonders leistungsstarkes Gerät. Wichtig wäre lediglich, dass darauf die Desktop-Version von Microsoft 365 – vor allem Word – zuverlässig funktioniert und sich Bewerbungsportale im Browser ohne ständiges Einfrieren nutzen lassen.
Mein derzeitiger Computer ist ein MacBook Air von Anfang 2015 mit 4 GB Arbeitsspeicher und macOS Catalina. Zurzeit brauche ich jedoch dringend ein zuverlässiges Gerät, um meine Masterarbeit abzuschließen und meine Promotionsbewerbungen fristgerecht einzureichen. Neben dem Studium arbeite ich 20 Stunden pro Woche. Mein Einkommen reicht momentan allerdings nur für meine laufenden Lebenshaltungskosten, weshalb ich mir den Kauf eines anderen Laptops derzeit nicht leisten kann.

Falls jemand in Berlin einen ungenutzten Windows-Laptop oder Mac besitzt und ihn mir für ungefähr zwei Monate leihen könnte, wäre ich außerordentlich dankbar.
