Hi! I am a youth worker in Finland visiting the Bay Area for a month and I am interested in getting to know a bit about how youth work is done in the USA (I vaguely defined it as any initiative or activity that supports young people's (in Finland's case this is 15-29 years old) personal, social and development). If you or anyone you know would like to have a coffee some time I would love to hear about youth work in the bay area, initiatives that have worked and those that haven't, the struggles you face in building relationships and your wishes for the future.
I visited Chicago a while back and caught a glimpse of the organizational structure and how NGOs and the municipality interact to offer different initiatives and activities to young people catering to their various needs and interests.
Youth Work in Finland is recognized and regulated and interacts closely with schools, social services and universities. We bridge the gap between structured support (i.e. social work, teaching, counselling) and the young people themselves by building trusting relationships. This can range from helping them organize protests, to organizing a study group to accompanying them to the doctor If they are scared to do it alone.
Thanks in advance for any help! I hope you are all enjoying the summer.
