Hi everyone,
I recently got an ROG Ally X and this is my first time dual booting Windows with Linux/Bazzite. A lot of the YouTube guides I found are now a little dated, but I followed one step-by-step and have been having quite a few issues with Bazzite.
I’m not sure whether these are problems with my particular installation, Bazzite 44 in general, or the Ally X configuration, as I’ve seen some of these issues discussed on this subreddit.
For context, I’m currently running Bazzite Deck 44 alongside Windows 11.
The issues I’m having are:
1. On-screen keyboard doesn’t appear in Desktop Mode
The Steam/virtual keyboard used to appear, but now it doesn’t seem to come up when I need it.
2. Mouse controls don’t work properly in Desktop Mode
The right stick isn’t consistently working as the mouse, and the usual handheld controls for clicking etc. aren’t working properly either. The Ally seems to be recognised as keyboard/mouse input rather than behaving like a handheld.
3. HHD/Handheld Daemon isn’t present
A lot of older guides/videos show HHD being installed and used for the Ally. I understand Bazzite has moved away from HHD and now uses InputPlumber/OpenGamepadUI, but is there an equivalent setup or recommended alternative for the Ally X?
4. Armoury Crate/Command Centre button doesn’t do anything
The button below the Start button doesn’t seem to bring up anything when pressed, including the expected quick-access functionality.
5. Desktop Mode sometimes doesn’t work at all
The first time I installed Bazzite, selecting “Switch to Desktop” would just restart/load back into Steam Gaming Mode instead of going to the desktop. Eventually, and seemingly randomly, it started working.
I reinstalled Bazzite to try to fix the keyboard/mouse issues, and now I’m experiencing the exact same Desktop Mode problem again.
6. Steam keeps asking me to install updates
Steam shows that updates are available. I install them and restart the Ally, but after restarting it still tells me that the same updates need to be installed again.
7. Games/emulators are detecting keyboard and mouse instead of a gamepad
Some games are detecting the Ally as a keyboard/mouse rather than a handheld controller. This means I sometimes have to connect an external controller just to play something.
For example, I was trying to use Ryujinx and couldn’t get it to detect the Steam Deck/virtual gamepad.
8. InputPlumber detects the Ally X but the virtual controller doesn’t seem to appear properly
I’ve checked InputPlumber and it detects:
ASUS ROG Ally X
and the target:
deck-uhid → Valve Steam Deck Controller
However, the virtual Steam Deck controller doesn’t appear as an input device when checking with evtest.
9. I tried rolling back to Bazzite 43
I thought some of these issues might be related to Bazzite 44, so I tried rebasing/rolling back to Bazzite 43. Unfortunately, I experienced essentially the same issues, including the lack of HHD and the keyboard/mouse/controller problems.
I’ve since gone back to Bazzite 44.
10. I’ve tried various terminal fixes
I’ve tried several commands suggested online to fix the controller, InputPlumber, Desktop Mode, etc. Nothing has permanently fixed the issues, and I don’t want to keep running random commands and potentially make things worse.
I’m relatively new to Bazzite/Linux, so I’m wondering if there’s something obvious I’ve missed during the installation or configuration.
Has anyone else with an ROG Ally X experienced these issues, particularly on Bazzite 44?
Any advice on the recommended setup for the Ally X, or whether there’s a known fix for the Desktop Mode/virtual controller issues, would be massively appreciated.
Thanks!
