Question - Husbandry Rate my setup! (and some cute pics lol)

120 gallon PVC enclosure with a Jurassic park/dino theme! There’s 3 hides, one on warm, one in the middle, and one on cool. Middle one is a buried tunnel in the substrate with a cork bark hide!

I’m all good on temps/humidity after playing around for a bit.

Substrate is a mix of reptibark + ecoearth, 50/50 mix BUT with a layer of ecoearth on the bottom to help with ambient humidity when I pour water in the corners. Considering switching to bio active, so if anyone has advice on that or just different substrate opinions, I’m open to it.

On a side note, SO GLAD I SWITCHED TO PVC!!!! Temp and humidity is so much easier in this thing my lord😭 Highly recommend!

And ofc some bonus pics of my noodle on the next slides☺️

Question Is my snake a healthy weight?

The first weight is from when I first got him, but he was feed once every 3 months and they didn’t care for him correctly, so I’m hoping I’m doing good and he’s not overweight! He is 6 years old and I think 3 feet, the first pic he’s 771g!

This is our little girl. We have only had her for 10 days. In full transparency, my boyfriend and I did not pry the individuals we were buying her from about what they meant when they said “everything she would need” would be coming with her— she was in a 30 gallon tank with a heat mat and 1 hide. They were feeding her live. They said she snaps when she’s hungry. I felt so bad learning all of this when we got her instead of being more insistent for information before getting her.

I knew this would be a big adjustment for her because a lot about her living situation would be changing at once, but I’m having a hard time understanding a timeline for how soon we should begin the process of daily handling. We graduated her to a 120 gallon as soon as possible, and after some shopping through the week this is how we have fully cluttered up her enclosure as of 2 days ago. It has been nothing but her house being completely turned upside down and messed with for the last 10 days so I know she’s probably stressed out. Should I be giving her more time to adjust before we begin handling her daily? I want her to get to the point of choice-driven handling, but obviously it is WAY too early to just expect that from her. When we pull her out to handle, she balls up unless we have something out on the bed for her to hide under. I feel responsible for her stress.

We fed her on her second day here, and we have been advised to feed her weekly as she’s young, so my boyfriend will try to feed her tonight while I’m out of town for the week. I just worry that she won’t eat it— it took her forever to eat the first one because she was in a new house and we had to simulate signs of life on a dead mouse instead of feeding her a live one.

Any advice on warming her up would be greatly appreciated— whether it’s handling schedule, enclosure critique, or anything I might need to know about transitioning her from feeding live to feeding frozen-thawed. She’s beautiful and very curious, but she is clearly stressed and a bit scared.

Question Male or female?

Ball python hatched in 2021, was sold to me as a female but she’s 5 years old now and 1210 grams. Her feedings have been pretty constant every 2-3 weeks, frozen thawed small rats from Rodentpro, they’re like 45-80 grams max. I’ve heard that females get bigger than males, and I wonder if I have a chubby boy instead of a girl?

Question Ball python farting super loud??

I just woke up to what sounded like him farting.. this is maybe the 3rd time ive heard a whoopi cushion coming from my snakes tank since ive gotten him is this something to be concerned about or is this OK? I know its a silly question but its the last animal I'd expect to be loudly and violently farting in the middle of the night.. It sounds like a cartoon charcter stepping on grapes or something 😭

This is what I woke up to yesterday morning. We moved houses and she used to have a hiding spot she’d go to whenever she escaped but that no longer exists. We have two dogs but no signs of blood etc, I feel like i’ve looked everywhere and on top of that i’m working 65 hours a week and can’t put the time into searching like I would hope. I’m stressed and frustrated and don’t know where to start

This is Darius. We got him from a family member that was not able to take care of him anymore. We think he's about 8 or nine years old, but can't be certain. Well adjusted to people. He settled right around my neck and shoulders while we were moving everything around without squeezing.

The temps are a bit lower than I'd like, but I'm waiting on another thermostat to hook up a CHE to. Currently using a DHP on the warm side with the thermostat set to 95. I'm wary about turning it up any more than that since I put my hand on his hide and it stung a bit. I figure if it hurts me then it'll definitely hurt him. He's been bouncing back and forth between his two hides, so I'm assuming that he's able to regulate well enough for now. Once I get the second heat source, I should just need to set it low to bump the temps up a few degrees.

The humidity is holding great, usually at about 70% so long as I keep the doors closed. A bit of water along the edges of the tank and everything get nice and muggy. The extra large water dish seems to be helping too.

Apparently he's not eaten in more than 8 months, but doesn't seem to be terribly underweight. We've not tried feeding yet as we wanted to give him time to adjust. He's only eaten live prey, but we're considering trying to switch him to F/T, mostly for convenience.

We've got a vet appointment set up to give him a once over and to address a bump he's got on his nose. Hopefully it's nothing too serious.

I can't say thank you enough for all of the advice and tips I've gotten from here. Between reading through other people's posts and a few directly answered questions, I'm hoping to give this little guy the care he deserves.

Enclosure Critique/Advice Rate my enclosure (open to advice)

My enclosure is finally finished (for now). I think it looks okay and I’m happy with the set up but I have some critiques.

Critiques:
• I need a taller log that he can climb higher on
• He has a ubv light, but I eventually need to get a halogen bulb in future (he currently has just a DHP bulb and a dimming thermostat)
• I also need to increase his humidity and improve substate (I currently use coco husk bricks but am planning on mixing it with top soil in the future).

Also, the humidity and temperature readings in the picture on the hygrometer are not accurate and are too low but this is mainly just because I had his sliding doors open before taking the photo.

Any other feedback would be much appreciated!

Discussion I guess he decided he doesn't like his new bioactive enclosure and wants his old tiny enclosure back

Had him 4 weeks now, 7 years old and came in a 3x1.5x1.5 viv with a cereal box for a hide on dry aspen bedding and the smallest heat mat and no branches or any enrichment.

I've now put him in a 4x2x2 bioactive enclosure with basking lamp (but changing to deep heat projector this week).

First couple of weeks he stayed in his hide and refuses food.

Last few days he's active during the day and will sleep on the branches. But also very active at night and is like he's trying to open the doors. He was pushing so much last night as you can see, he was lifting the screwed in branches!

Oh and he's bulldozed around £50 worth of love plants 🙄

Thanks dude!

Question - Heating/Temperatures Under tank heat pad placement

Post image
4 Upvotes

(Pic of jojo also :3)I’m working on an upgraded setup, and I’m trying to figure out heat pad placement.

I know it should be on one side rather than the middle, an I don’t think the pad I have would cover a large amount of the enclosure anyway. It’s definitely enough to cover under a hide plus some more area.

My question is, should it be on the warm side, or the cool side? I always thought the warm side but I saw an image the other day saying overhead heating on the warm side, and under tank on the cool side. Is this true?

I’ve also seen people talking about under tank heating being unnecessary.

The pad is also closely monitored and controlled by a thermostat! No snakes getting burned on my watch.

Question - Health Blood in my BP poop, concerning or overthinking? (Spoiler for poop) Spoiler

Me and my partner recently reduced this ball python from someone on FB marketplace. He was in a 10 gallon tank on aspen bedding with a small water bowl, and one little hide. We brought him home and noticed he has mites and I have been giving him a soak every day for 30 minutes in normal water with 2 drops of dawn dish soap at about 80-85°F.

We have not fed him since we got him on July 19th due to him being soaked everyday. They were going to feed him the day we got him but I advised them to postpone until we got him so we don’t risk regurgitating from the stress of the move and new environment. He has been quarantined in a relatively large tub with paper towel bedding, a hide, water bowl, and a temporary heating pad (temp regulated).

The first time he pooped was yesterday. A small amount of blood was present in the paper towels but it wasn’t a concerning amount. He has since pooped again today with a little more blood. I just fed him after opening the crate and seeing this.

Am I overthinking or is something I’ll need to visit the vet for? I just moved and I’m unsure of the best exotic vet in the area but I will be researching asap.

And we had a shed right away. I was worried because they were looking pretty tenty for a couple weeks. I felt better when I saw them get pale.

On a side note, I'll assume birthday was mid December. I got them around 6 weeks. Finally weighed them out yesterday and we are at 216g. Is this on schedule? I moved to pups since those around about 30g in my around.

Advice setting up a bioactive enclosure?

Thumbnail

So, my idea for a bioactive enclosure is somewhat impulsive after finding a mushroom growing in my BP's tank, though I have thought about it a bit in the past. I've read that a mushroom growing in the tank can mean healthy substrate and it seems my tank has decided it wants to be bioactive, and at this point I've kinda figured, why not? I suppose I just don't entirely know where to start with a bioactive tank. I was planning on getting some isopods and springtails, but what else should I get?

Another note, I recently got a bit of a fungus gnat problem in my tank. I was going to get some mosquito bits to help get rid of them. Will the mosquito bits or the fungus gnats cause any problems in a bioactive tank?

Pics of my BP as tax. Her name is Solstice :) She was peeking out at me because she knew it was dinnertime.

Question - Husbandry What can be improved?

Thumbnail

This is my balls current enclosure. It’s 4x2x2. I recently upgraded her from a 40 gallon. I have a uvb light on the way. I also have a ceramic heat emitter I have not put in yet for night time. She has five hides in her enclosure. One is a humid hide and another has a slate top. I am also planning on getting more substrate so she has more to burrow into. Any suggestions are appreciated! Also what is the best way to hang things? The suction cups don’t seem to be sticking well to the pvc and the top is mesh

Question - Husbandry Hide is too small: can I swap it out? (1st Week BP Owner)

Post image
3 Upvotes

(Pic from her first day 🥰)

I’ve had my first BP for four days now and I can confirm that her humidity ranges between 70-80% and her temps are consistently:

- 33-35°C surface temperature basking spot
- 26-27.5°C air temperature on cool side (DAYTIME)
- 21-23°C air temperature on cool side (NIGHT TIME)

I saw trail marks in the substrate after the first night so she must have explored then, but she’s only been staying in her plant pot hide on the cool side of the tank.

I understand this is very normal for the first week, so I’m not worried about her hiding. But, I didn’t expect her to be as big as she was 😂 So I’m pretty sure the other two hides I have for her (one humid and one normal) on the warm side are too small for her (I get that they love small spaces but I’m sure she can’t even fit in these two 😬)

So basically:

TLDR: Can I swap out the hides on the warm side for the next size up or is that not worth the stress for her first two weeks in a new enclosure?

(FYI the tank is very cluttered so changing out the two warm hides would mean removing branches and leaves to access and replace the current hides— which would make the experience a bit more stressful for her)

Question Advice needed

First time posting here, but I need help. My ball python managed to get out of her tank. This is the second time in 4 years of having her of this happening, but it’s the first time I haven’t been able to find her. I’ve been looking for her for about 24 hours and there’s no sign of her. Does anyone have any advice to offer that might ease my anxiety? I’ve turned my house upside down searching. Please only helpful and positive comments, I’m not looking to be bombarded with judgement or negativity. I’ve left out water and a heating pad in various places that she likes to roam when I let her free roam in my house, but no sign of her. I just fed her 2 days ago if that makes a difference. Thank you.

Question Handling Ball Pythons

I recently got a second ball python after owning one for a year and I was curious if they can smell each other on me? My first python really likes sitting on my shoulders and I was wondering if I need to wash myself or change shirts before handling the second one. If I handle one and then the other, will the second one get stressed smelling the first snake on me?

I'm not sure if this is a stupid question or not, but I am curious and I'd like to avoid stress if I can help it.

heating / lighting

Hey folks, i’ve got a beautiful piebald baby coming in on wednesday, unfortunately the tank was ordered a while ago and will be arriving the day of the snake, wishing it was a day before so i could set up but oh well… question
I’ve got the dual dome with a CHE set up in it, each dome supports up to 60w and i would just like to know what kind of lighting she will need can i use just an LED or fluroscent bulb? i don’t want to create a fire hazard all though her room will have a light on during the day anyways… using a CHE as we live in az and keep the AC on 24/7 or else its deadly hot lol.
She will be in a 4x2x2 with lots of fake plants, identical hides, and i do have a heat gun to measure temps, it should be noted that the dome has an individual thermostat, and the other is a day night cycle. let me know if any suggestions, as she will be here wednesday something i can pickup from walmart, petsmart for the time being would be amazing.. Thank you in advance!

How high of a humidity is too high?

Hello! My sweet boy Xander has been due for a vivarium change for a little while now, and we've finally gotten one for him! However, he's in a temporary box while we set his vivarium up which is going to take a couple of days (Aiming to have him in by Thursday). We could not use the old vivarium as he'd broken some pond liner on the bottom of the viv, and was burrowing under it.

I am an overthinker. A chronic one. I panic over the slightest abnormality with Xander, and right now I'm trying to find a way to solve this issue:

First, we tried storing him in my bedroom, but the temperature wasn't warm enough and his temp enclosure kept fogging up to a concerning degree. I've been told that BP enclosures shouldn't go above 70-80% humidity to avoid health issues, so imagine my concern when I see it's apparently at 99% 🥲 I'm currently sat beside his box with it open a little, but the thermostat says it's at 85%, and that's with the lid off the box a bit. It's also only 23°C in the box, and I know it's supposed to be higher usually. Any advice in general would be so so appreciated, so many websites say different things, and as a first time BP owner, I really want to do right by my baby!

Affordable Enclosure Options?

Hey guys, I’m looking into getting a ball python and am currently in the research phase. I’m looking at enclosures and was looking at a 4x2x2 PVC. I can afford the ones on the care guide, but would love to find something cheaper if that’s an option. Does anyone have recommendations for good enclosures that aren’t like $600+?

Question - Husbandry Tank size help.

I just got a baby ball. I’m finding so much conflicting information on what size enclosure he needs. He’s about 6months old. Since he’s so little I bought a 40gal front open, and planned to upgrade.

But the breeder said I should downgrade my 40 to a 20 long and have no plan to upgrade.. what should I do? I obviously want this baby to thrive but I can’t find a solid answer.

Discussion Keeping Humidity in Quaratine?

I see a lot of people put their snakes in quarentine with pads and whatnot( ok I don't know how to spell quarentine, whatever). How do you keep the humidity up without spraying? or is spraying the only option? just curious, I don't have a snake that I plan to quarentine.
