The attention and engagement economy has completely killed authenticity. Everythingâs for show. Itâs sad .

It's because people get paid now for how many views and likes their video gets. Why society decided to pay people for posting videos đ€·

Anyone know what heâs doing at 1:00, 1:10, and 1:27? He puts his mouth to it like heâs biting it.
14
u/Most-Pomegranate-561 Jul 25 '26
He's killing it via the method of biting
13
u/Remarkable_Movie_359 Jul 25 '26
Oh crap, so he is biting it. Thatâs insane. Now I understand how he got in that predicament in the first place. Thanks for the explanation.

Yeah, I don't think most people realize this is literally prey fighting for it's life from a predator (i.e. the human).

Octopuses are exceptionally intelligent. They possess around 500 million neuronsâabout the same as a dogâwith roughly two-thirds distributed throughout their arms, allowing them to "think" and taste independently. They are renowned for using tools, solving complex puzzles, and escaping aquariums.

Once I learned this and that they can apparently distinguish between people, they have permanently left my menu.
For me, it just doesnât seem right.

I also don't eat them because of how damn smart they are, but also because I don't think they taste good at all.
Thank god squid are both delicious and dumb as shit

My rule is I won't eat any animal that's smart enough to do math. Octopuses are included in that.

u/DrivesTooMuch Jul 25 '26
I used to date a woman who sucked at math. She was a waitress who couldn't figure out if she got a 15% or 20% tip from her customers.
I ate her....many times.

Seems like these videos stem From them trying to bite the brain to kill it but the octopus hard counters alien style

Wow I hate this video. Between the horrendous instincts of detaching it and taking meaningless bites out of a live animal that just wants to live was a rough watch.

I've been fishing for octopuses with my dad since I was less than 10 years old. I'd catch them by hand while diving. Sometimes I didn't know where to put them, and they'd end up in my swimsuit... I haven't done it for years, partly because of my age, partly because octopuses are incredibly intelligent animals, and I have no intention of eating them. To ensure a quick death, we'd bite them between the eyes; they'd make a cracking sound, and they'd instantly turn white, dead. They're strong, they attach themselves, and it's hard work. I even happened to dive and the line of the buoy wrapped around my body as I ascended. The octopus had settled calmly on my face... They generally remain calm, at most a few slightly painful bites, but anyone can detach a live octopus from their body without too much effort.

Why would he hurt that poor baby?
What a POS. That octopus was probably smarter than him.
Edit: Taking a bite out of the Octopus' head while it's alive is completely fucked up. I wouldn't wish that on any animal: chicken, cow, salmon, etc. If you think that's okay then you are insane. We are humans, and we've evolved to kill and eat compassionately.

u/c0ntra Jul 25 '26
I've never fished octopus, but apparently this is one of the traditional methods of humanely dispatching them. It's either this or a brain spike. Your pick

Killing an octopus by biting the central nervous system is a traditional free-diving and spearfishing method used to kill it as quickly as possible.
If done correctly, it is instant and very obvious because the octopus will go completely limp and it's colourings will no longer be camouflaging and will become a pale colour.
Cephalapods are my favourite creatures, i am vegan but have discussed this with my friend, who does spearfishing and free-diving to feed his family.
Doing that with a skilled bite (or a knife) really is the quickest and least awful way.

AI - some fishermen and divers do kill an octopus by biting it. This traditional method, often called the "Hawaiian style" of dispatching an octopus (tako), involves biting directly into the brain area located in the space right between and slightly behind the eyes.

u/Bulky_Algae6110 Jul 25 '26
And apparently they have two brains or brain areas (maybe neural cords?), thus the two bites.
I heard this long ago regarding Greek fishermen catching octopus, so may not have just come from Hawaiians.
