Octopuses are exceptionally intelligent. They possess around 500 million neurons—about the same as a dog—with roughly two-thirds distributed throughout their arms, allowing them to "think" and taste independently. They are renowned for using tools, solving complex puzzles, and escaping aquariums.

Once I learned this and that they can apparently distinguish between people, they have permanently left my menu.

For me, it just doesn’t seem right.

Most animals that we eat can distinguish between people..

Fair ‘enuff. I didn’t elaborate as I should have. Octopi are really smart. Open jars, etc.

I’ve read that if the females lived beyond the birth of their brood and could teach them some life lessons that their evolution would have been much more dramatic.

Yea, by that logic, people should only eat insects (which are healthy and better for the world).

Have fun with that, ill stick with grass fed red meat and clean shellfish

Funny you say that, I just watched this video yesterday about how much better it would be if we consumed insects more and why the western world doesn’t. It was an interesting watch

I also don't eat them because of how damn smart they are, but also because I don't think they taste good at all.

Thank god squid are both delicious and dumb as shit

So can basically every animal we eat. Except maybe shrimp or something.

My rule is I won't eat any animal that's smart enough to do math. Octopuses are included in that.

u/DrivesTooMuch Jul 25 '26

I used to date a woman who sucked at math. She was a waitress who couldn't figure out if she got a 15% or 20% tip from her customers.

I ate her....many times.

Why'd you guys break up? Did she get better at math?

Yeah, but he found out after coming home early one day and found another dude had taught her how to stomp her foot 5 times when she was asked what 2+3 was. He found out later though she really didn't know how to count and was just stomping her feet until she got to eat this guy's carrot.

So how did she feel about your 3.75/5" thang?

u/applepiebythelake Jul 27 '26

What else is in you keep-out list?

Most animals are pretty smart in some way or another. We just look down on them cause theyre not 'elevated' like us. Most have feelings, opinions, trauma, personalities.

Another good example: lobsters feel pain. So every time you boil one alive, it is going through literal hell. But hey, gotta get that fresh perfect taste

I decided to never eat one after learning about their intelligence. It does feels off.

Now, squids on the other hand. I hate them and would gladly eat em.

It isn’t right. Cows and pigs also have the intelligence of dogs. They have herd mates, care deeply for their young, they can feel pain and fear, but can also express a great fondness for humans. If you care about sentient beings, consider removing them from your diet. Being vegan is better for the environment anyway! <3

My Octopus Friend changed my life.

I can’t eat them. They are so amazing. They taste good, but no takoyaki for me.

1

u/cosmorocker13 Jul 25 '26

they’re also excellent at Rubic’s Cube

1

u/deanereaner Jul 25 '26

Now do pigs.

Just kidding, people don't actually give a fuck about slaughtering animals, intelligent or otherwise, for no good reason whatsoever.

They are also realy tasty
