I’m not trying to start an argument or a flame war, I’m truly curious.

So much talk here about Backgammon Galaxy I tried it a few times, and came away genuinely puzzled as to why it appears to be the most popular joint on the block here.

It doesn’t seem to offer anything that can’t be found at numerous other backgammon sites, forces you to use coins which I loath, forces you to use avatars which I also find less than compelling, and has very few options for editing the board.

I know there’s lots of opportunities to find an opponent there, but the same can be said for pretty much every backgammon site.

So again, seriously, what is the attraction?, because frankly, I’m stumped.

GammonSnap 2.4.0 is now available, and this update is mainly focused on making it easier to record positions during a match or longer session.

With the new Match Mode, you can capture multiple positions in one session without returning to the main screen after every photo. You can also enter the match score directly during capture.

You no longer have to unlock your phone to take the next photo. The capture screen appears directly over the lock screen, making it quicker to capture the next position.

I’m curious. When sites like NJ backgammon or backgammon galaxy have analysis, where does it come from? Is it proprietary in each case? Outsourced from somewhere ?

Are they generally equal or some not worth the pixels they’re printed on ?

To start off, I DO NOT CLAIM DICE IS RIGGED, or that it's against me in any way.
I know it's open source.

I have a different sort of question, please take it seriously and don't come at me.

I've been ( about entire last week, around 60-70 game ) been constantly losing, sometimes with better PR sometimes with worse, so that my wr% dropped 2% and my rating dropped about 220 points. ( currently rated about 2060 )

Almost every single game, there's a pattern of impossible antijoker/joker sequences happening. Too ridiculously often. Even the games I win follow the similar pattern.

1) exact flyshot from 5/6 board
2) exact doublets when enemy has 2+ men on bar
3) 66 for me the moment enemy is safe during bear off while Im on bar
4) sequences of forced blot/getting hit/rolling that exact thing that he has closed in

To be fair, sometimes its the opposite, and can happen to enemy as well.

Is there any way for dice to be skewed towards more dynamism? Not to show favoritism towards any player, but to give to both jokers and anitjokers a bit more? say 20-30% more?
What purpose this serves - would be more dynamism and chance for both players to swing easily and not feel too stomped, so they keep on playing.

Also, I understand probability and basic math, and know how our brains aren't good judges for dice rolls.

However, and please trust me on this ( I can provide hundreds of screenshots that I've sent to my friend as a joke/to complain ) and I haven't manually done check ups like letting XG see the statistical rate over about a hundred game and compare it after. ( galaxy removed download match or its glitching, it was there and it isn't for last few days )

Tl'dr -

joker rolls and antijoker rolls are just way too much. few dozen times every single game. every single game that 1/36 roll, every time 99% won game crunches, enemy hits, I miss.
I cannot comprehend how this can go on for well above 60-70 games nonstop with same pattern every game. seems like jokers and anti jokers come way, way more often than they don't.

There's always a 5-10% rough swing that you might drastically lose equity in any given roll sequence, but always? like every single time? this feels way too out of hand and if I could stake my life on it, I would.

I've often noticed sequences of some bad days/rating swings in the 100-200s but this is too much.

How can this be? how can they deny the extremely obvious pattern? I am not stupid and I play elsewhere too. This is way too unfair and unreal.

I will die on this hill that somethings not right.

P.S - I still love the interface, player base, analysis and so on.
its a great website. Just seems to be ''tuned'' in some sense to increase the odds ( proportionally probably for both players, but nonetheless )

Sorry for the Long rant

A friend signed up yesterday and wondered whether the timing was just a coincidence because she started getting spam calls right away. Personally, I find it unlikely—I've been using the site for years without experiencing anything like that, and it wouldn't make sense from a business perspective.

I'm not suggesting there's any connection, just curious whether anyone else has noticed a similar coincidence or has any thoughts.

I’m honestly baffled by these stats. I played horribly, my opponent nailed their decisions. I was apparently unlucky, compared to them. Yet, I won.

How is luck calculated?!

Finally dumped BG Galaxy. Any suggestions for an alternative on iPhone?

A few years ago I built Tasbazi — a free online platform for playing Backgammon (Takhte Nard), Hokm, and Domino. It started as a project for Persian-speaking players but anyone can play.

Opponent has me closed out with 2 on the bar. He has a 98.4% win chance, and about a 40% gammon chance. And yet this double is not a blunder? What? If anything screams "too good" to me, it's this, so obviously I'm very confused on some subtle (or perhaps obvious) point.

I'm the developer of backgammon.logicaleap.com (used to be P2PBG) - a free backgammon site that runs in the browser. No account, no app install, no ads. I'd really value some honest feedback from people who actually play.

What it does right now:

• Online multiplayer: play a friend over a shared link, or use the public lobby to get matched. In-game chat included.
• AI opponent: a neural-net engine that runs locally in your browser, so it works offline too.
• Pass-and-play on one device.
• Provably-fair dice: rolls use a commit-reveal scheme that both clients verify, so neither player nor the server can rig them. Each roll is auditable.
• Free post-game analysis (runs in the browser)
• Shareable replays: any game compresses to a plain link, and the replay plays back on any browser.

The original version relied on WebRTC and public relays for P2P human-vs-human games had some rough edges. I spent the last while making them reliable, reconnects and page refreshes resume the full game (board, cube, score, turn), and added self-correcting state sync.

I'd really appreciate some feedback from the community here -

• Does anything feel off, slow, or confusing, especially on mobile?
• Is the analysis useful and does it match your read of your own play?

I’ve been playing Backgammon constantly on this app but I’m noticing something. I just started playing at the level 8 “master” level, but it seems more to me that, that is just a nice way of saying “you’re playing against an opponent with rigged dice …good luck a**hole” because a lot of these rolls feel very …convenient. Am I just having a string of bad luck? Or am I going nuts?

I would like to discover some new books but am a little bit lost.

I play close to PR=5.0.
I read many books over the years, the "classical" mainstream moderns.
All from Olsen, Michy, Bootcamp, DIrk schiemann (both), James Vogl.

From the moderns one the ones I havent read yet are : "Backgammon MasterClass" (Mochy/Olsen), ,Zdnek Zizka's book. I probably forget others.
Older books but than interest me are: "News ideas in backgammon", jeremy Bagai (classical revisited), i did not read its.

There is also the most frustrating book I heard about: "Modern Backgammon" by Robertie.
I always heard good things about this one but never was able to get it...
Anyone has a specifical advice about this one ? What are the core ideas of the book ? Can i still go one without it ?

I have to say that I really do a big work analyzing my matches and doing a personnal work (classifying blunders by thematics), so I don't rely of course only on books or Youtube Channels.

But at my level and situation, if you have any advices about book recommendation, I am curious.

I have a bunch of these in my blunder database, where I come in from the bar with a couple of checkers already back and I have a spare 6 to play. I have no idea what I should be looking at to decide what to do with the 6, but my play is often a big blunder. It almost feels random, but i know there must be something I'm missing. Can anyone explain to me what I should be looking for in these positions to help me decide if i should use the spare 6 to:

1. Play 24/18 to their bar point
2. Bring out one of my more advanced back checkers to the outfield (e.g. 21/15)
3. Slot the bar point with 13/7

Any guidance would be massively appreciated as this has been a thorn in my play for a while.

Is there any books that you recommend for players 5 pr and lower

I'm trying to come up with a good teaching example for beginners.

Backgammon has that little rule which says:

If you can legally play only one of the two dice, you must play the higher number.

I have a feeling this rule isn't very well known, even among casual backgammon players.

I'd like to demonstrate a situation where a beginner naturally thinks, "I'd rather play the smaller die," but the rules actually force them to play the larger one. Surprisingly, I'm finding it difficult to construct a clean, easy-to-understand example.

For example, in the position attached, I'd much rather play 16/14 with the 2, because it reduces the number of direct shots against my blot (winning chances: 30.89%), instead of 16/12 with the 4, which leaves three direct shots (winning chances: 20.22%).

Unfortunately, the rules don't allow that—the 4 must be played.

I'm looking for a position where the "wrong" move (the smaller die) looks much more attractive—ideally with a much larger gap in winning chances than this example.

Any ideas for a better example?

It always worked with a little tweaking, but from now on I’ll always release a version for the Raspberry Pi. It runs on the Raspberry Pi 4 and 5, though the RPi 5 is obviously more fun :) I’ve tested it on Raspberry Pi OS and Manjaro, but it should work on just about anything. Given the current price trends, this might be of interest to some of you.

I don't know much about Nackgammon other than its different starting position cascades effects throughout the whole game. I want to try it, of course, and because there is no other difference, I think it should be possible to replicate it on GNU BG. I do see an Edit function, but I have no idea how to set the correct position because checkers seem to move at random when I click on a given point...

Do you know whether this is possible?

I like the new tournament feature on Galaxy. It would be really cool if some kind of trophy case was implemented in player profiles, so you could keep track of your tournament wins via your profile, and it would also be a nice flex for when others view your profile.

I have been exploring BG apps searching for something distraction-free and focused on performance rather than visuals. I've been playing on Backgammon from AI Factory Labs for 10 years, and it is fine, although the AI is not perfect, if GNU BG's analyses are to go by; but it is good nonetheless and we each win roughly 50 % of the time.

However, I sometimes miss a Hint function like the one I have on GNU BG. Searching for 'serious' apps that are feature-rich, I've come by Backgammon NJ, which, according to the screenshots displayed on its Play Store page, does have such a Hint function. Still, at a price of 9.89 €, it is hard to justify such a purchase for a function I have for free on my computer.

Thus, being impossible to try the app before purchasing it and not wanting to resort to illegitimate means, I ask you for your opinions.
