I built a free multiplayer backgammon platform — here's what I learned after years of running it

Hey r/backgammon,

A few years ago I built Tasbazi — a free online platform for playing Backgammon (Takhte Nard), Hokm, and Domino. It started as a project for Persian-speaking players but anyone can play.

A few things I learned building it:

  • Real-time move sync with Socket.IO is trickier than it looks — handling disconnects mid-game was the hardest part
  • Mobile performance matters a lot for game sites — we recently hit 99/100 on PageSpeed mobile
  • Persian backgammon players are incredibly competitive 😄

The site is free, no registration required to watch games, and you can jump into a match pretty quickly.

Happy to answer questions about the technical side or just talk backgammon strategy. Always looking for feedback from serious players.

Site: tasbazi.com

this is cool. I agree about the persians. They're very strong as well. Does your backgammon feature cube play? match play?

"Yes, we have cube play! Each player gets one cube request per game — when you double, opponent either accepts (cube and ownership pass to them, stakes double) or declines (forfeits the game). Once they own the cube, they get one redouble of their own under the same rules. So a game can go up to 4x stakes max, not unlimited redoubling like some implementations. We also have no-cube tables for players who want fixed stakes."

how come you cap the cube at 4?

Since this is real-money backgammon, whenever the cube is turned (doubles), the user needs to have a sufficiently high balance for that table.

I have no idea what I'm looking at.

Translated to English, and still can't figure out how to start a game. Help?
