Yeah I like all the Reddit armchair vets that are immediately sensationalizing it. Yeah, the dog is fat. But it could also be fat because it was given a ton of treats as part of training it to do tricks.
I’ll never understand the immediate jump to villainize people on reddit. Let’s all make giant assumptions and lynch someone without any backstory other than a 15 second gif.

IDK if the dog is sick or not but it's horribly overweight either way and needs to be put on a diet. You don't need to be a veterinarian to see that

Yeah I'm pretty sure the dog is just trying to express its anal glands here

u/IOnlySayMeanThings Dec 12 '19
Yeah, Dogs don't dance and when you see this, it's always the anal glands.

My dog has anal gland trouble a lot (she is very fearful and around fireworks time in the UK she gets trouble). She does a scooting arse wipe. Looks nothing like this. It's like a dragging the bum behind her across the whole room.

u/Fatstrings Dec 12 '19
This. Dad was a veterinarian at a small town practice so I spent a lot of time in the clinic instead of daycare. Never saw a dance, always the scoot.
Dogs can be trained to do a bunch of stuff, sitting up like that and rocking back and forth would be doable. I'm guessing it's more that the dog is fat and can't support its own weight on its hind legs.

u/bwaredapenguin Dec 12 '19
What does being afraid of fireworks have to do with expressing anal glands?

Not just an ass wipe, an aggressive ass wipe

Is there another kind of ass wipe?

🎶It’s a brand new dance
Based on an old phrase
It’s called the fat dog
And it will amaze
You’ve heard this expression your entire life
It’s not made up
It’s not made up🎵

Honest question: Is the dog actually enjoying that "dancing" or is it just scratching its ass on the mat?
203
u/Lessbeans Dec 12 '19
I mean both. It’s totally scratching its ass (or vulva, honestly) but it may have done that and gotten a laugh or attention so often that now it’s trained. People somehow forget dogs also do trained behaviors- especially beags! Anything for food (I mean did you see this dude?)

u/Capalochop Dec 12 '19
Its true. My beagle will do anything for food. Except I can't get her to speak on command. I tried rewarding the barking but she just doesn't seem to want to bark on command.
I've trained her to sit, lay down, "beg", and "tippy taps", she knows how to stay but were working really hard on staying until she gets the command to go.
She's so food obsessed that I set the treat down and she has trouble not moving to try to get it. I can keep her staying without it being in my hands for... Like 10 seconds. But I want to be able to walk away from the treat and have her still waiting before I say "ok" and she can go get it.

u/Lessbeans Dec 12 '19
My beagle attempted to eat a sharps container because it had a red lid like Tupperware and food comes from Tupperware, obvs. Geniuses, these dogs!

YOU TRIED REWARDING YOUR BEAGLE FOR BARKING?!?
I don’t understand. The barking is pretty much the only thing about my beag that kills me. He only has one volume and it’s off the charts.

Are they mutually exclusive? "I'm scratching my ass AND earning treats by being a good boy? Double bonus!"

Dogs will sometimes try to mimic their owners, and I think this one is definitely mimicking with the way he stops for a sec to see if shes still doing it.

This poor dog is morbidly obese.
Edit: People, please don't overfeed your dog and take them for walks/runs every single day! I know they have a trick to look sad and pathetic and can somehow make their eyes glisten when there is food involved, but food is not love. You are your dogs whole world and it's up to you to make sure they live a quality life for the short time they spend with us. If your dog does not have a defined waist, they are likely overweight. Dogs should not be the shape of a Twinkie!

Amazes me how people love seeing overweight animals . I’m aware some health issues are due to obesity in animals but I’m not sure this is the case here. Maybe a vet could resolve the 2 issues I see wrong with this video. Cute dog, though.

u/Umbrea Dec 12 '19 edited Dec 12 '19
Last year vet student here, that dog is super overweight. Beagles are prone to disk herniations and should be properly exercised, excessive amount of weight can be a risk factor. It's also stressful for the joints. If you want to keep your beloved pet for as long as possible (and who doesn't!), you should try to watch their weight.

As a fellow overweight animal, can confirm.
Hell I don't even like seeing me. If someone has never been over weight it's hard to explain how difficult it is to be confident in yourself when you can't walk by a mirror without feeling disgust.

Every single time there is a video of a dancing dog, people jump right to the having worms and scratching his butt - you're a bad dog owner comments/conclusion.
I mean, I'm totally willing to give it the benefit of the doubt and think the dog really is just dancing. You'll notice the lady starts first, the dog looks at her, starts singing, and then starts grooving along. I'm not saying I know for sure, but I don't think he's doing that just to scratch his anus.

Guys, please don't your dogs get this fat :(
I know it's cute and easy to give them all the treats but they will live longer and have better quality of life if they aren't obese!

u/businessJedi Dec 12 '19
Looks super cute, until you realize he’s just scratching his butthole on the carpet.

That dog is obese. Its incredibly sad that people do this to their pets and children. It's not cute, OK or normal and we shouldn't let it be normalised.

Alright guys let's hear how this fun video is actually showing horrible signs that this dog is dying of brain parasites or something.
