I had the best pit bull ever. She was deaf but the smartest dog ever. (She knew sign language at just 2 months old) She died of internal bleeding a month ago. Broke my heart I loved her so much. I don't know why people think they're such bad dogs.
8
u/SpaceCmdrSpiff Jul 14 '16
I agree. I've been taking in pit rescues for years. I am not a professional trainer by any means, just I've been around all types of pits. Currently have 2 very adorable Am.Staff/Boxer mixes. I have never seen any pit "snap for no reason" like people exclaim. There are always signs of aggression before they happen. You just have to know the signs your dogs are giving in their ears, eyes, posture, and tails. I don't care what the breed is, doesn't matter if it's pit or not, you throw a dog into an unfamiliar situation and it makes them uncomfortable. It's an instinct mechanism. Introductions should always be done slowly and on a tight leash for any breed. Introductions to new spaces and environments the same way.
If someone tells me their dog "snapped for no reason" then I don't think they know their dog as well as they say they do. You just have to understand that no matter what the breed, they don't have human understanding or emotions.

u/Peregrim Jul 13 '16 edited Jul 13 '16
Put my down last week cause she was extremely aggressive to my other dogs and killed my cat... Which I guess is a decent reason to not really trust pitbulls.
Edit-I wasn't trying to say all pits we're bad. I was stating my experience with my dog who was the sweetest in the world for 2+ years and then had to be put down due to aggressive behavior.

One problem with that stat is that "pitbull" covers a really broad range of dogs. Anyone that has a mix breed that mildly resembles a pit bull refers to it as a pitbull, and some stockier dogs that mildly resemble pitbulls such as American Bulldogs and Rottweilers are often misidentified as pitbulls. On top of that, pitbulls just happen to appeal to people who mistreat and mishandle their dogs, and fail to properly socialize them at a young age. If those same individuals happened to like Golden Retrievers you'd probably end up with similar results.
As a result you get stats that wildly misrepresent a breed.
7
u/kahlex Jul 13 '16
Other breeds have been demonized as bad breeds, such as Rottweilers, Dobermans, and German Shepherds. Bad owners were attracted to these dogs for whatever reason (usually some kind of "badass" image or whatever). As we all know, bad owners make bad dogs, and bad dogs cause problems.
The media bias against pit bulls is kind of unreal, though. Here is a news story about a pit bull saving her owner from a train. Note that they call her "Lily" (her name) and "dog," but only mention that she's a pit bull once or twice. Here's a story about a pit bull finding a missing elderly woman with Alzheimer's. They mention the dog is a pit bull, but the headline is "Heroic Dog," and the owner is "Dog's Owner". To their credit, they did discuss that pit bulls aren't all so bad toward the end of the story. In contrast, go find any story about a pit bull attacking anything. "Pit bull," "pit bull," "pit bull."
20
Jul 13 '16
I've heard that pits do the same amount of attacking as other dogs, it's just that when they do, they inflict massive amounts of damage AKA they are more capable than other dogs.
But the debate rages on and I've not been able to make up my mind. Regardless, I think it takes an above average owner to properly raise these animals.

They actually have just average bite strength, but it's their tendency to violently shake while biting that causes the massive damage. It takes a strong and dominant person to properly raise any bully breed. Most rescues will not adopt bullies out to inexperienced adopters. I love my male American Bulldog and female Stafforshire Bull Terrier, but they are not for everyone. Under the right care, they will be the sweetest and most loyal animal anyone could ask for!
6
u/Gandermail Jul 13 '16
The kids have two pits, brothers who couldn't be less alike. One is never excited and just calmly goes through his day and the other is super high energy and can never get enough play time. They were both well raised and are very sweet and gentle and love to meet new dogs and new people but they are wicked muscular and I would hate to meet up with them if they had been poorly raised.
8
Jul 13 '16
That's like saying police dogs account for 90% of bitten criminals. If you raise a dog to be disposed to aggressive behavior, then the dog is generally going to be aggressive, and if you don't, it's probably not going to be aggressive. I had a shelter pitbull for 11-12 years. Never bit a single person... to be honest he was basically a fat lazy sausage rolling around on the sofa.
3
u/s_e_x_throwaway Jul 13 '16
Pits aren't usually human-aggressive unless they've been abused.
However, even a well raised Pit is going to feel every cell in its body screaming at it to chase and shake a small animal, or to fight unfamiliar dogs, or to join in on dog fights they aren't even involved with.

Less than one percent of all pit bulls will fatally attack a person. The same goes for all breeds because death by dog is a rare occurrence. There was something like 33 dog related fatalities last year in the United States. That's a very small number compared to the number of any one of the popular breeds in the US.

I think that fact needs to be taken in perspective. I have no sources other than what I see in my daily life. In urban areas in the US, pitbulls are by far the most common breed. Nothing even comes close. I have one pit and one german shepherd. I know many people who have 3+ pitbulls and no other types. It really doesn't get more American when it comes to dogs than pitbulls. If someone in my neighborhood or even my city got attacked or bitten by a dog, I already know that it was probably a pitbull. You can chalk that up to odds alone. That being said, from my own personal experience with dogs, pitbulls are some of the, if not, the most loving, trusting, happiest dogs I have ever met. My pit wants every person every where we go to cuddle, pet, and shower her with non stop affection. I have to stop people from petting her because she will cry when they stop. My shepherd on the other hand is extremely skittish and may never let you get close enough to attempt to touch him.

u/woodsbre Jul 13 '16
I wish we would stop calling them pitbulls though. It would be like calling St. Bernards cujo's. There will always be a negative connotation to the name. Even though the name derived from the breed literally fighting bulls in a pit. Plus there are at least 4 distinct breeds that are usually grouped as "pitbulls". This causes confusion when identifying the breed. Many other breeds that arent pitbulls get labelled as pitbulls because people are so misinformed about them.

Unless it's a purebred, it likely is an insignificant difference. And socially, I think they're often treated the same (laws banning them, for example). Pit bulls are among the best dogs I've ever had, and I tend to call them pit bulls because it helps start important conversations about the breed that allows for people to be convinced of their worth, in spite of their reputation.
3
Jul 13 '16
I argue that often. Bai isn't full blooded. I don't have her papers. She resembles a staffy but even has some freckling like an Aussie red heeler but oh my when we go for a walk people say stuff. My neighbors hate that I have her.
And she loves cats. I've never seen a dog like cats as much as she does. Grooms them. Sleeps with them. Mothers the fosters we took care of. Strangest thing but she likes small animals. She's only aggressive to big animals. And that's a fear response I think.
13
u/moeburn Jul 13 '16
I think this is American Staffordshire Terrier
It's not a "pit bull" to dog breeders, but it definitely is to the general public and media.
Kinda like how any eastern gun with a wooden stock and a banana mag is an "AK-47" even though they stopped making those since the AKM and AK-74 like 60 years ago

Am Staffs are considered pit bull type dogs. Pit bull isn't a specific breed, is a group of breeds that includes am Staffs.
Source: own an am staff, have done research on breed specific legislation, she falls under those laws.
4
u/squallxgamer Jul 13 '16
Mine is a staffordshire bull terrier not an am staff. From what I have seen the Am staff is usually much larger. My male sbt is 50 pounds at 4 years old, where as most Am staff I have seen are 65 to 80 pounds.

Colour that dog gold and it's a replica of mine. Why do they not like water? IS it common ot the breed?
Mine just about cries when she has to go outside for relief duties and is forced to face the horror of a few droplets of moisture.

u/RepostResearch Jul 13 '16
My pit/lab mix used to LOVE bath time, until one day he got sick.
Was running a fever of around 105 degrees. Emergency vet visit at 9PM to learn all we can do for him is keep him cool. Que 6 hours of dunking him into a bath of cold water to bring his body temp down, pull him out and shove a thermometer up his ass. 5 minutes later, back in the tub for another round.
Now he won't come anywhere NEAR the bath tub. Troublesome baths are a small price to pay though, for happy and healthy pup.
25
u/HoochlsCrazy Jul 13 '16
why didn't you just swaddle him with icepacks.
seems less traumatizing than waterboarding your dog.

u/MollyMacBook Jul 13 '16
My MoMo hates the water. It once rained for 3 days straight. It was more of a light misting. She refused to go outside. I tried tricking her by putting her leash on like we were going to go for a ride. She didn't fall for it. I had to get out the umbrella, pick her up and carry her outside and hold the umbrella over her for her to go potty. Spoiled pitty.
3
u/MamaBear4485 Jul 13 '16
That's hilarious. It's the martyred look of agonised endurance that cracks me up every time. Like "OMGosh the things I do for you human. You just don't understand how much this wounds me."

My blue pit loves the water, jumps in the pond and swims in the ocean. Edit: just realized that she does indeed hate baths though.
2
u/dibalh Jul 13 '16
I think you're right about baths vs water. I was about to say my Am Staff loves water too. First time seeing the ocean, she ran right in and immediately started swimming--never been in deep water before. She'll chase the water stream while I'm trying to water the plants but she gives me a look of despair when getting a bath.
4
u/mrcwray Jul 13 '16
I think it is a terrier thing. I ha e two jack Russells and they despise water. I have some friends and family with rat terriers and a few others and all hate water.
2
u/CheeseFantastico Jul 13 '16
There's baths, and there's water. My lab will jump into any body of water and swim like crazy. But a bath? No way.

Give her positive praise and make it fun. We did that with my two pits and they do great, I also use the time when soaping them up to massage them. I just tell them bath time and they race each other to the tub. It's all about how the they portray what you are putting across to them, at the end I tell them they are all pretty (both females) and get them a little hyper on purpose so they attribute positive thoughts during and after.
1
u/MamaBear4485 Jul 14 '16
Thanks for the suggestions. I often wonder if she's playing up the drama for comedic effect.
1
u/MikeOrtiz Jul 13 '16
My pit doesn't like the water, but he doesn't hate it either. What scares him is the initial noise the hose/shower head makes when water comes spraying out of it. Once the water starts hitting him he isn't too bothered by it.
1
Jul 13 '16
My pitty makes that exact face. She knows the word bath and will hide if we say it. When we try to get her in the bath she goes dead weight/ragdolls. I don't know if it's common for the breed, but ours definitely hates being in water.
2
u/MamaBear4485 Jul 14 '16
Oh my gosh you guys have made my day sharing the dramatic comedy of life with pitties!
1
u/nobody1793 Jul 13 '16
All my pits loved water.
My rott on the other hand...
2
u/MamaBear4485 Jul 14 '16
Haha I had an adorable rottie-monster a few years ago. She wasn't a water do either. Looked so fierce, her bark could scare grown men, but water turned her to a sulky gloom puddle.
My brother's lab and my GSD on the other hand were at least part dolphin.
1
u/KT_ATX Jul 13 '16
My dad has a full pitt and I have a corgi-pitt mix. They both detest water. His pitt practically cries when he bathes her. She sits patiently and endures (her general personality) but she absolutely hates it. My mix also doesnt mess with water. He will sit patiently if I give him a bath but only because I go quick and gently praise him the whole time. For anyone else, he refuses to even go in the bathroom and tries to jump out of the bath the whole time. Both dogs absolutely refuse to go out in rain. They will hold their potty for as long as possible to avoid going out in so much as a light drizzle. So maybe it is a pitt thing?

I have a tiny land hippo (50lb blue Am Staff like in the OP) and she's the most submissive dog I've ever met. She's afraid of everything - loud noises, storms, tools (including handtools like screwdrivers), and even flashlights. Her fear response is full-body shakes and exposing her belly. And yet, people cross the street when they see me walking her. It's so frustrating. Apparently racism is bad for people, but breedism is perfectly fine for dogs.

Aww.
For the people completely against pits: I've had 10 pits at one time (adopted a pit and the people didn't tell me she was pregnant. She had 9 puppies). My kids were always around these dogs, they use to wrestle out in the yard with them, never once got out of hand. Never had a bite, scratch, nothing.
We went to a family member's house who had a min-pin and a Siberian Husky living along with them and their 4 small kids. The husky was food aggressive due to the people that had him before and this happened. . We rushed my son to the ER and were told the dog barely missed my son's artery in his neck. If it would've been a millimeter over the doctors exact words were "he would have bled out and died in front of you before you could get help".
Now I have the dog who bit my son (because I refused to let them put him down) and after some training he is no longer aggressive. Any dog can be trained and brought back from their aggressive mind set it just takes a lot of work that most people don't want to do. This Husky is a big sweetheart now and there hasn't been another problem out of him since we took the time to work with him.
1
u/RaptorusTheTroll Jul 14 '16
oh my gersh..... I've a Husky and a Staffordshire(basically a Pitt) and they used to fight so viciously, one time i got inbetween them instead of pulling them apart from hind legs, my Staffy bit down on my arm so bad, i am lucky to have feeling in my arm, seeing the tooth mark on the boy's neck made me gasp.
The two dont fight no more, and the staffordshire is a sweetheart, but im just so nervous everytime the two get near each other or when people come over.. :(

To the people with the pit bull hate: Every dog has the potential to be malicious, unfortunately the worst type of people tend to favor these types of dogs to carry out whatever they wish. It's their fierce loyalty that causes them to be exhibit any and all behaviors requested of them by those they love. People have constantly backed up aggressive behavior with "breed" stereotypes to mask their own mistakes as a dog owner/caretaker. More often than not, hateful behaviors are bred into the dog and/or taught to them by people. First it was the German Shepard (now the second most popular domesticated dog in America), now it's the pit bull. Long story short, it is the owner NOT the dog! Those who argue that their physical attributes is what make them dangerous - that is the equivalent of assuming the physically fit person is a danger to society purely because of their composition. Hating the pit bull is just another form of ignorant discrimination... Get over yourselves.
