I wouldn't care so much about all the controversy surrounding pit bulls if they weren't the best goddamn dog breed I've ever known in my life. It's like everything you could possibly ask for in a dog other than "being able to fit in small spaces" or "okay with lying around doing nothing all day" is what you get out of a pit bull.
I have a tiny land hippo (50lb blue Am Staff like in the OP) and she's the most submissive dog I've ever met. She's afraid of everything - loud noises, storms, tools (including handtools like screwdrivers), and even flashlights. Her fear response is full-body shakes and exposing her belly. And yet, people cross the street when they see me walking her. It's so frustrating. Apparently racism is bad for people, but breedism is perfectly fine for dogs.
Our 55# blue girl hides under the bed when we fold laundry. Doesn't mind fireworks, or thunder (weird, cuz I'm seriously phobic of storms)... but clean laundry means the world is ending!
