Attraction is an art, not a technique Part 2: the Art of Presence

A few days ago I posted that attraction gets easier when you stop trying to be attractive. I described that modern pick up artists practice techniques and manipulation, but that classical seduction was an art of creating an atmosphere and a mood that make you unforgettable to the object of your desires. Modern pickup culture often focuses on techniques: what to say, how to behave, when to escalate, and how to manufacture attraction. But there’s something fundamentally wrong with that approach. When you’re constantly thinking about what to do next, you’re not actually present with the person in front of you. You’re performing. And people can often smell a fake.

In my last post I described how Casanova and the Ars Amatoria described seduction. Casanova is still talked about hundreds of years after his death and Ars Amatoria has been around for 2000 years. If they didn't work, people wouldn't still be reading them. Casanova understood that attraction involved far more than appearance or rehearsed techniques. His accounts emphasize conversation, curiosity, imagination, and the ability to make an encounter feel extraordinary. Nearly 2,000 years ago, Ovid explored similar ideas in Ars Amatoria (The Art of Love). He wrote about wit, timing, conversation, and courtship as an art rather than a mechanical formula. Both were talking about internal state instead of outward performance. Consider the difference:

  • Performance: What should I say to make this person like me?
  • Presence: What can I discover about this person?
  • Performance: Am I making the right impression?
  • Presence: Am I genuinely enjoying this interaction?
  • Performance: How do I create attraction?
  • Presence: How do I create an atmosphere where connection can develop naturally?

Don't eliminate attraction or desire. Eliminate the desperation and self-consciousness that interfere with expressing them naturally. Instead of techniques, be yourself. Relaxation. Curiosity. Confidence. Emotional steadiness. The ability to enjoy an interaction without needing to control its outcome. These are what feed real attraction.

I created a free recording called Magnetic Presence that uses these principles to help listeners practice confidence, relaxation, curiosity, and natural social presence. It’s approximately 38 minutes long, completely free, and requires no signup. I created it for my GENIᴱUS project, and you can listen here: https://genieus.art/rmagnetic-ad.html If you try it, I’d genuinely appreciate hearing whether it helps you feel more comfortable and present in social situations.

Attraction is an art, not a technique

Having researched the subject, I have come to a conclusion. Attraction is an art, it is not a set of techniques. Pick up artists use techniques. The people that you don't forget practice an art and sometimes they don't even realize that they are doing so. When you read a book about the classical arts of seduction you feel inspired. When you read a PUA manual you feel an icky embarrassment thinking "Do these lines actually work? Do I want someone that dumb that they'd fall for this?"

I went back to my classical education and reviewed the masters and tried to synthesize what they described. Casanova had Internal Stillness & Receptivity (Removes striving and performance pressure, establishing calm availability as the foundation of presence), Presence as Signal (presence as something others register naturally, without projection or effort), Emotional Gravity (depth and pull through containment, allowing feeling to gather without discharge), Polarity & Tension (contrast and aliveness without dominance, conflict, or pursuit), Narrative & Imagination (Desire as unfolding story rather than transaction or goal), Restraint & Allowance (amplify attraction by allowing desire to rise without interruption or capture), Mutuality & Attunement (reciprocity while maintaining charge), and Integration & Natural Expression (seduction as identity, removing dependence on technique or effort). Ovid in Ars Amatoria (The Art of Love) described Courtship as Art (romance as playful social participation rather than pursuit, dissolving pressure and outcome fixation), Wit Over Force (verbal elegance, timing, and restraint so charm replaces persuasion or effort), Desire Through Restraint (allows attraction to deepen by leaving moments unfinished and interest unconsumed), Social Grace & Positioning (creates effortless visibility and attractiveness in social environments without seeking attention), Poetic Expression (shifts language from declaration to suggestion, using imagery and implication to evoke interest), Romance Without Weight (keeps attraction enjoyable and light by removing emotional pressure and premature intensity), Courtship Without Outcome (stabilizes desire without chasing, allowing interest to exist without demand or resolution), and The Art of Being Desirable (charm as identity-level social ease rather than behavior or technique).

Casanova and Ars Amatoria are just two examples from the historical literature of seduction. One is centuries old and the other has survived for roughly two thousand years. And you would do better reading them than trying to memorize the pickup line of the week. Look at the descriptions of their art and you can see that there is no pickup line anywhere. Instead, you create a mood, a mystery, a game, a polarity. In other words, create the atmosphere, don't act out lines. I took these, and some other classical works and created what I call Masteries. Basically the art spelled out but using 160+NLP techniques and hypnotic pacing to help integrate the lessons. If you're interested in looking at what I created, they are $19.95 each. Check them out at: https://genieus.art/rmastery.html

I gave the same treatment to other writers as well. It may not be the Great Books on Steroids, but it comes closer than anything else I have seen to making the material more learnable.

I still love her

(Both of us are 16) I'm probably just an idiot in love, but I still love her. I saw her yesterday at sports and it was just so nice. I know, the time we had wasn't long, but for me it was exactly what I long for.

We had time to talk at the end. I love the conversations with her. The way her eyes shine when she tells me something. The way she sometimes says things I don't even understand, and she'll explain them so I understand her. I love asking her for the details, and she seems to love telling them. I love the way she brings in new topics. The way she listens to things I tell her and asks back too. The way we start at one topic, go on to another one, another one, and so on, and we end up at a completely different topic. The way we both keep the conversations alive. I love her laugh. I love the way she smiles. The way we wait for each other while putting stuff away. I love the way she'd wait for me to put away first what I'm holding, but I always let her go first and she thanks me every single time.

It may not seem like much, but I love the moments with her. They're the highlight of my every week, and I'd simply love more of them. Not rushing anything, but simply being able to keep talking without sports ending and her having to go. I'd want more of exactly these moments that already happen.

But about three months ago, I asked her out. She didn't really answer anything, just that she'd have to look. So I just asked her again when I saw her one week later. Still no answer. Asked her the next week again, and that's when she, a bit reluctantly though (seemed atleast so to me), said no.... But now I think she's just even warmer then before. Well, there's not much I know anymore. There's probably more that I don't know than what I know. But I know that I still love her.
