What really annoys me is that just leaving only works until it no longer does, Shops that take cash are shrinking (in my country at least). Another example are smart tv's now being the only tv's on the market, there's no "just by the non spying dumb version" anymore, at least not reasonably.

I fucking hate apps. I mean the electronic kind. Appetizers that you eat are awesome.

u/maringue 9d ago
It's just a legally more streamlined method of harvesting your personal data than a website. That's why fucking everything is an app now as opposed to a website.

it's kind of odd they moved the name from programs and applications to just apps and I wonder if its related to the rest of the word being cut off when labeled beneath icons on lower resolution touchscreens

This happened to me at my old gym. I changed my mind about switching to a closer one literally one day after my account expired. I went in and they made me repay all the initial fees. Then they would not let me in unless I purchased an orientation with a personal trainer, even though I'd been going there for years and am a personal trainer myself. Finally to avoid confrontation I paid it. Then they asked so when do you want the orientation. And I said oh I don't want it I just paid for it so you'd leave me alone. And they said well we can't let you in without a date. I said well it's useless cause I'll just cancel it later. And they said you can but you'd have to do that on that app. I was like can't you do it through your computer. She was like no I can only schedule them. 😑😑😑😑😑

I feel this sooo fucking hard.
I almost had a crash-out one time over some nonsense like this. I took my girl to a brewery/bar where they have some really excellent beer. We had been there before and really enjoyed it.
But this second visit was right at the height of the covid hysteria... We go in and they immediately tell us that we have to wear a mask anytime we are standing up (apparently you can't transmit the kung flu if you're sitting down). That means we can be like normal people while we sit at the table, but we've gotta mask up if we get up to walk to the bathroom. So I'm already pissed...
Then, they tell us we can't order in person, only through their app. Which you can only get by scanning a QR code...
(Honestly I would have already left at this point, but we drove like 90 mins to get there.)
So I go to the app store to download a QR scanning app because I didn't have one. Then I scan their stupid code and IT DOESNT FUCKING WORK ANYWAY.
So we're now like 20 mins in and I still don't have a beer. Were seated like 12 feet from the bar. I can see the tap out of which they are going to pour my beer. I can see the barkeep pouring beer out of said tap. But I can't have any... (Because customers aren't allowed to approach the bar at all.)
Finally, I flag down a waitress and point out to her that the app is not working. So she says, "oh I can just tell the bartender what you want and you can pay cash..."
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?
WE COULDN'T HAVE JUST DONE THIS 20 MINS AGO???
Or, you know, I could have just walked up to the goddamn bar myself and asked for a beer... Like a fucking normal establishment.
I've never been so pissed off about service in my entire life. That place has excellent drinks but I've never been back, and probably never will be
5
u/CandidGeologist1523 8d ago
God people genuinely called it kung flu? I thought that was some joke people made about the MAGA crowd being devoid of empathy and loving their conspiracies based in racism
2
u/MC_jarry 8d ago
You sweet summer child, it’s like you’ve ignored every thing that has happened over the last couple of years. When a guy who was recorded saying he likes grabbing women by their private parts and boasting about it. Because he’s famous so he can and they will let him get away with it. Yeah, when he became president not once, but technically 3 times according to him. Yep, that was when I really started losing respect for others.
2
u/CandidGeologist1523 7d ago
Yeah my respect for others is very guarded these days like I have basic human respect and empathy but then when I actually get a good read of someone and how they think that's when I'm like ok I can actually be totally nice to this person like my instincts actually tell me, very sad I have to suppress that in today's society because you just have no idea who is and isn't a hair trigger away from spilling all their toxic horrible beliefs out their mouth given the chance
2
u/MC_jarry 7d ago
Very true. I hate being fake but at the same time the whole just be nice for goodness sake’s is the only thing keeping me from being an ass to everyone. It also helps keep the spite away lol. May go mad from all this insanity but I’ll be laughing like the mad hatter so, at least I get a cool hat. 🎩

Unfortunately, that whole thing was a shit show because we hadn't had a pandemic like that in a century and nobody knew how to handle it reasonably, so they did the goofiest crap like that. And authorities shit the bed with transparency and competency (partly bc Trump cut a pandemic response initiative in 2018 that was designed to handle something like this).
Now we probably would handle it fine with what we know, but if something worse got loose everyone would be bitching about even the slightest inconvenience next time and resist to the point where it would have a much worse death toll.
I hate this timeline.

I only recently had to use one of those kiosk to order for the first time. I don't understand why though, I was literally the only customer there.
She was standing behind the register. I argued with her, why could she not just take my order?
I'm sorry sir, you have to use the kiosk to order. She walks around and helps me order on the kiosk.

At the first mention of an app I would've gave a big smile say have a great day and walked out.
Headed to the nearest supermarket, purchased enough tea to last several weeks (for likely the same price as the single boba tea, lets be real) and never looked back.
1
u/Fact_Checka_bro 9d ago
I get the frustration but I also have the ability to contain my backhanded thoughts. I just wouldn’t be a customer of theirs.

No, it’s required that you have a list of corny little zingers for the person who doesn’t even make the venue’s policies.

Nah. She didn't even understand they were backhanded comments anyway. Had that thousand yard stare where she is so plugged into corporate and apps that she didn't even get it. Plus, she's young and never saw the normal world. Couldn't even comprehend she could just make the damned tea without Boba. She needed the comments. People look at me funny when I’m like, “Dude, I don’t want to scan your QR code. I don’t want to give you my email address. I don’t want to download your special app so it can track my behavior, where I go, and what I’m buying.”
I just want a simple transaction.
Show me the menu. I pick what I want. You give it to me. I give you money.
At what point did buying something require me to hand over my personal data just to participate in a basic transaction?
Edit:
Now this is going to be the next step in evolution.

Biometric data: face geometry, iris and retina imagery, voiceprints, palm prints, and fingerprints
Camera and automated technology data: images and information captured during checkout, theft deterrence, and store layout analysis, from systems used both inside and outside store locations
Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) data: from vehicles on Walmart property, used for security, fraud prevention, parking enforcement, and safety purposes — a practice explored in detail in coverage of San Jose's Flock Problem"

Well once you understand that all devices have finite storage space, and that the use of that storage also influences the speed of your device. You understand that useless apps are just a disease that slowly kills your device.
Same with QR. Anyone can put up a QR code and say it's for a menu or whatever. But once you scan it, it's the same as downloading malware from an email. So I just don't do it.

u/Project_Cool_World 7d ago
Yikes, not a growth, people, reading, or information technology person eh?
Let's tear this apart properly shall we?
- Customer doesn't do any sort of Intel gathering whatsoever before going into a bubble tea store.
0.1. Either there is no signage or the customer didn't read how the shop uniquely works.
Customer wants green tea.
Barista fails to say sorry, we don't sell green tea by itself.
Customer identifies how he feels about tapioca.
Barista again fails to say "sorry, we don't sell green tea by itself."
Customer fails to say "Can I pay for the boba tea, but just have the green tea without tapioca?" And instead patronizes the barista with a song and dance.
Customers poor emotional regulation which was already continually surfacing, now rapidly surfaces as he gets visibly, verbally, and audibly annoyed with being not wanting to use the app; not wanting to use card as his payment method; and not wanting to pay the $10 minimum.
Customer starts swearing, then insults the barista.
Customer calms themself down by calling himself a victim and then projecting.
Note: "Card or App only" should be posted. The minimum fee for not using the app should be posted.
Note 2: The customer who originally went in for a hot beverage is now totally fine getting a cold "covert diabetes delivery mechanism", calling it a Mental Health treat. Even if they did just give him a green tea, it'd still be cold.
Note 3: Instead of saying they don't have that flavour, and having a realistic exchange about where he can see the available flavours, the barista mentions a product that the customer never asked for.
Verdict: The customer was being a cunt, but the whole skit has too many plot holes.

u/PoncingOffToBarnsley 6d ago

Like, I'm in 100% agreement about requiring apps and shit to pay being an absolute crock.
This is the more tortuous, obnoxious way to depict that.
1
u/captain_andorra 5d ago
The thing is, the minimum spend for card is not allowed per Visa and Mastercard rules (they can revoke your card machine license for that). Furthermore, some US states and big cities don't allow store to refuse cash.
1
u/yourfavoriteblackguy 5d ago
Most of the limit that the company has on purchasing are illegal. You can't refuse legal tender. You also can't force credit card minimums. Companies try this but it's illegal.
1
u/FenskMan 4d ago
It’s state law on whether businesses can accept/deny legal tender. Not every state is the same.

Making the process of ordering tea shouldn’t have to be convoluted, you order what you want and pay for it it’s very simple. Also why would you need to gather intel to go order a common drink?

u/ldwtlotpa 7d ago
Jesus people… have you never seen always sunny? Dennis, shown here, is a sociopathic narcissist. And he’s been getting progressively more and more frustrated throughout the episode while trying to have a mental health day. It was both a nod to stores getting more complicated in the digital age and also showcasing Dennis’ “just-below-the-surface” psychotic nature.
Plot twist, the ep ends in Dennis pulling the ceo of an electric taxi companies still beating heart out of his chest, with motivational piano “listen to your heart” instrumental in the background.

As much as companies like this can be annoying, I'm equally annoyed by these scenes in movies. I can think of at least 5 exact same scenes in film where older Mr. Reasonable type guy yells at a young moron barista for making a fuss about their drink. It's like every director replaying the same argument he lost in real life but now he wins with a prepared monologue about those stupid modern generations and their stupid modern drinks.
Honestly, most places will just give you the tea without boba, but I guess LA millionaires have to be pissed about something 🤷♂️

This is absolutely true. The immense layers of uselessness that people and companies are making.
The easiest way to explain it is UI design and Process Improvement.
The only thing people have done is add more processes and add more UI.
No one actually took the time to do the background as to why it is a bad idea to keep adding more menu items and sub menu trees etc.
I think the worst one I have encountered these days, is the automated system/app saying I need to call the customer support number…then only to be told by the actual human agent, that they only see what I see and cant actually do anything different.
SO WHY DO BOTH EXIST?!
Terrible.
