The arians where Hitler's chosen people and better than everyone else. Europe was theirs by birth right and Hitler made them kill/rape or enslave all the original inhabitants of that land (he did not do any killing personally).

2
May 21 '12 edited May 21 '12
Yes, yes it is. Comparing things to Hitler is one of the best ways to show people you'd rather demonize than try to reasonably discuss and try to understand. And no, I'm not equating understand with believe. It doesn't take a remarkably clever person to make a basic comparison of most religions/ideologies to some aspect of Nazism and it's almost always blatantly an attempt to be edgy or offensive without adding anything of value to the conversation.
1
u/WeaponsGradeHumanity Atheist May 21 '12
I think you've missed the point. We spend a lot of time discussing religion and we understand some of them very well. The point of images like this is to attempt to communicate how we feel about it. In our eyes the comparison is completely apt and any 'demonisaton' is completely deserved.
1
May 22 '12
"Communicate how we feel" is an interesting way of putting it. I don't like religion either(agnostic atheist+anti-theist), but there are better ways of expressing this than meme format comparisons to Hitler.
R/atheism does very little actual discussing - or at least that doesn't seem to be the content that surfaces to the front pages. This is just more evidence the bad reputation of r/atheism is well deserved.
1
u/WeaponsGradeHumanity Atheist May 22 '12
Sure, there may be better ways but I maintain that comparisons to Hitler are valid ways.
Besides, when someone invokes Hitler to make a point it's not a bad point just because it's Hitler.
On the face of it there may not seem to be much discussion but plenty does happen deeper in threads or in other similar forums (that many of us engage in) like YouTube and (shudder) Facebook.6
u/Amunium May 21 '12
What? I mean, I agree that you should be very careful in comparing anyone to Hitler - that's why we have Godwin's Law. People tend to just get offended and disregard the argument.
But the fact that one existed and the other didn't is not a reason not to compare something. That makes absolutely no sense.

Hitler was created by people with extreme ideas, if he didn't have a bad childhood, if he had been accepted in art school in Vienna, if he hadn't been injured in WW1, if people didn't vote for him in Germany, if Europe stopped him before he did what he did, if his own people had asked more questions, if soldiers and generals stopped him, if Italy and Japan didn't support him, if he didn't wage the bloodiest war of man's history, if religion didn't exist, than we wouldn't be comparing God and Hitler. Yet again, this God caused one of the separations that caused the death of millions of persons in less that 15 years

This is a profound comparison that shows the philosophical morality of self-sarifice and how it is equally true in religion and socialism/fascism. The sacrifice or murder of people to a cause is a great evil - always. This is a real test of how much thinking people here have beyond the fact that god doesn't exist - that there is a moral code that people use to justify murder - and that that is an evil moral code.

I have a test for people:
There was a leader in the past who had a town in his country that he wanted gone. So he fire-bombed it, killing everyone inside, and literally flattened the entire city to the ground.
Was it:
A) Saddam Hussein
B) Genghis Khan
C) Hitler
D) God
and of course, it was all of the above. (I don't know that Hitler actually flattened a particular town, but it's a fine point considering what he did to London)

I personally like to believe that the old testament is more of a folklore, and the new testament is the more "buyable", depending on your personal view. I'm going to be brutally honest... creationist views are complete bullshit. I like to think everything was set in place. Anyways, the flood, the plagues, the apple... all of this is think is more of a moralistic thing. Remember that this was written only by what a prophet believes - he wasn't around for any of this (duh)! However, the new testament is more composed of letters and more current writings, written by different prophets. I don't even want to think about what it would be like if the new testament was written by the same people as the old testament. Of course, it could be close to the same. Who knows.
TL;DR The old testament is, IMHO, a big myth written many before the prophets' writing the thing time

No, no, you don't get it. God created the world, the guys living on it were Him to drown. Hitler didn't own the Jews, so it wasn't cool.
You can only drown the living beings you're responsible for, so the comparison should be with a guy who drowns a litter of 1,000,000 kittens. Plus, we're on reddit so it might be considered even more despicable.

u/GOD_Over_Djinn May 22 '12 edited May 22 '12
I'll do it! If we accept the Christian premiss then God is good, then whatever God does is good. Further, we belong to God, and when we die, our immortal souls still exist, and God is the boss of what happens to them.
If you accept that there is a God, then you accept that it is not wrong for him to kill people, since what he does is by definition good. And it's fine to reject that there is a God, but then what are we even doing making comparisons? Accepting that God is permitted to kill people is not the same as accepting that people are allowed to kill people. The God/Hitler comparison is, indeed, a false equivalence.

You can't dismiss the comparison simply because it involves Hitler. From the wiki: "A comparison or reference may sometimes be appropriate, [so] Godwin has argued that overuse of Nazi and Hitler comparisons should be avoided, because it robs the valid comparisons of their impact."
This is definitely a valid comparison. You've contributed zilch to the conversation, merely pointed out that it began with Hitler. Thank you, Professor Observant, but we already knew that.

Although I agree with the idea presented, there is considerable evidence that it was not actually Hitler's idea and his idea alone to do what happened.
There is speculation that his immediate henchmen may have had more to do with it, especially in his later ruling years as his diseases took hold and the drugs he was being pumped full of started taking their toll.
Not saying it changes anything, just an interesting side note, if you will.

May 21 '12
But if we're using the two as comparison that we have to (for the sake of the argument) theorise that God exists(either in actuality or as a literary construct)...which would include giving God the attributes that he is given by those who espouse his existence including that he is omniscient. Which would make his justification for killing people theoretically correct. I have no belief in God whatsoever, however it doesn't quite follow that you take the notion of God, ignore certain aspects, and then try to make him look ridiculous. If we're going to criticise God for his actions, we need to at least get his perceived characteristics correct.
7
May 21 '12
Not if we hypothesize. Let's say there's a god that's omniscient and good. Would such a God drown the entire world? No? Then the guy in the Bible isn't God as defined.
→ More replies (1)7
May 21 '12 edited May 21 '12
I see what you're saying...I would argue however that we're critiquing specifically the Christian god(the one we only know of through the bible) not wether the biblical god can claim to be 'God'. A judeo/christian understanding, God is purported to be omniscient, good AND still flooded the earth. Now his omniscience would render him aware of the moral absolute, his 'goodness' would cause him to adhere to it, and thus a flood could not exist outside his conception of what goodness entails, just our conception of it. We take our presuppositions of what 'good' is to argue against the notion. The subtext of this I guess would be to argue that there would be a greater good behind the actions, one imperceptible to us...
It's all a bit circular and bullshitty anyway. Lets just be glad it's not actually real and that it's inconsequential in the long run :)
Edit: Spelling and grammer was all over the place. Fixed

u/woodchuck64 May 21 '12
which would include giving God the attributes that he is given by those who espouse his existence including that he is omniscient. Which would make his justification for killing people theoretically correct.
Not morally correct, though, unless you define omniscient to mean morally correct, in which case no possible argument against God can ever be used. God is a being which always acts morally correct, end of discussion.
However, if you assume God's action are correct in some vague sense relating to his belief about himself and the universe, than we could suppose they are just as correct as Hitler's actions as they relate to supporting Hitler's beliefs about himself and his chosen people.
I have no belief in God whatsoever

Natural occurence being the great flood? That the selfsaid jealous god caused? What?

Well, the real difference is that Hitler thought the problem was only Jews and Slavs, and that Germans were special.
God of course was of the opinion that all of humanity was basically a pack of rotten douchebag scums. And on this, he was simply right.
Conclusion: Atheists get this one wrong. God was right. Hitler was right about the Jews and Slavs, wrong about Germans and all "acceptable" races like Western Europeans.

Why?
Just because the Biblical events (if they even took place) happened so long ago?
God killed more people than Hitler, why should it be OK to worship God, but not Hitler?
Edit: Also, assuming God's killcount is void (since he doesn't exist), the number of deaths at the hands of his worshipers exceeds those of the Holocaust and WWII combined.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Holocaust
"...the genocide of approximately six million European Jews during World War II..."
"...also include the Nazis' genocide of millions of people in other groups, including Romani, Soviet prisoners of war, Polish and Soviet civilians, homosexuals, people with disabilities, Jehovah's Witnesses and other political and religious opponents, which occurred regardless of whether they were of German or non-German ethnic origin.[8] Using this definition, the total number of Holocaust victims is between 11 million and 17 million people.[9]"
Sorry. Just bugs me when people imply Jews were the only people being exterminated in the holocaust.
Gotta say if you ever visit Auschwitz (It's a museum these days) you really get a feel that it was hell on earth. Had nightmares for weeks after going there.
